Celestion SL-6 copper dome replacement

:( I was listening to my Celestion SL-6 with my Technics SU-G50 which is lowered powered than the usual Technics SU-V8X i use with upgraded ouput transistors, i am so pissed at the amp, i think I will sell it :lol:, then maybe the old girls tweeter was going to fail, the other one is perfect. Actually the sick tweeter worked for 2 hours and then when i tested it again, it stopped in about 5 seconds :stalks:

There is a risk if i source another pair they could fail down the track also and they are not cheap these days.

searched the net and on another forum is South Africa, someone mentioned the seas-prestige-27tbfc/g-h1212 ? :scratch: , as a possible replacement. I dont have the specs for the original SL-6, though the SL-6i i found some info online.

Drill hole in the cabinet is 75mm with tiny grove for the tweeter wires. The metal plate hole for the copper dome tweeter is 38mm, 3 screw holes for the tweeter. So, tweeter tweeter diaphragm) has to fit the hole of the metal plate
Technical features: air suspension - two-way - power 120 watts - 8 ohms impedance - crossover frequency 2800 Hz - Sensitivity 84 dB Closed not ported. Specs from a SL-6si, not the 1981 SL-6, should be the same.

Have you checked to see what the problem might be? Could be the cross-over even..

The tweeters themselves come apart with the magnet assembly separate to the coil/dome section. So take the tweeter section off (the whole rectangle) - there may be some resistance as some putty type stuff seals the cabinet around the tweeter whole - slowly pry it up bit by bit, unplug the tweeter (think it uses push on clips). Then carefully undo the three bolts which hold the magnet to the diaphragm and front plate. The diaphragm is glued to the front plate if I remember correctly so make sure you either hold the magnet when undoing the 3 bolts or loosen them first before undoing them by hand upside-down. Then you can lift off the magnet (directly straight upwards or you'll damage the diagphram/coil)

You might be able to see a break in the fine wire near the terminals or it could be that the coil wire has come unstuck from the dome and is clogging the magetic gap. In the latter case, be very careful lifting off the magnet if there is any resistance to doing so.

I've had SL600s before and taken the tweeter appart to brush out a dent from the rear of the dome with a soft brush.. Then I carefully slotted it all back together and all was fine.

If you still need replacement, I'd first look at what might conceivably mount on the 3 front bolts otherwise you'll just make the speaker valueless by drilling extra holes everywhere. Take a look at more recent Celestion tweeters and if they use the same mounting. You have to be careful removing the diaphragm from the mounting plate but it's not impossible if you're patient.

E.g. the tweeters on these 90s DL8s look like they use the same 3 bolt mounting:

Their higher range of the A100/200/300 did too but from then on I think they go to four bolt from looking at google image search.

The Morel range of tweeters use a 3-bolt mounting to their front plate too so you might be able to remove theirs and mount it directly onto the celestion one.

But £80 for the later titanium domes from the A100 series - might be an upgrade (although some people like the copper in it's own right). Although I'm sure I've seen poor cabinet condition A100s go for the same price but you'll wait an age for some to come up.

Thank you for the reply. I did check the crossover, continuity on both sides? not sure if that is normal. I might take it out and check it, as i remember I had hotglue diving the inductor wire from the cap wire. Ive taken the copper dome apart when i upgraded the wire. I checked the wire it seemed okay but might take hi res pics to check it. I'll use the mulitmeter and check the connections, they looked to be holding to the solder bolb - it was funny they worked for 2hours without a problem before stopping, then when i tried the next day, they worked only a second. That is a good idea, new Celestion or Morel which seems a high end brand

Those ones were in mint condition and the AUS equivalent of £250. Two titanium tweeters from the guy in the UK would be about £190 with shipping and taxes?

Err.. instead of buying some top-price replacements, you might just find that a pair of A100s sounds a lot better than SL6s! In other words, don't spend too much getting the SL6 tweeters fixed or economically you'd be better off just buying something else. This logic stems directly from my poor decision making with secondhand cars...

Yes they are way expensive the titanum domes, I like your idea about the A100s, as replacements for the SL-6 copper domes are insane. Dont want to spend much on the tweeters and since the A100s are better anyway :D ... my brothers are good at finding good deals on used cars, I myself would be hopeless

I shall hook the domes up and see if they are good now as i found a problem that particular speaker the +ve wire was hanging by a single strand and broke off!! so fingers cross that is all it is

:scratch: I did up my Celestion SL-6 domes today,with new wiring for them, and since the solder tag on the tweeter had lifted, i wound around 28awg neotech copper wire, one tweeter is so quite, I can barely hear it. Maybe too much wire? or solder job is a bit dodgy or something :(, I had to bring the 28awg copper up near the tweeter, maybe that tiny distance, has made the tweeter qieter :scratch:
