Mentally watching Marco gently caressing the voluptuous curves and creases of his new wheeled orgasmatron ( http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?38020-Treated-myself-to-a-new-car-today ) got me thinking. Were I in a position to chop in my 8-year old 120k diesel punto with a budget of, say, £100,000 (sounds like a lot but if you saw the number of tricked-out Range-Rovers and such like in my village, you'd realise that for a lot of people that's pretty run of the mill stuff), what would I get?

Well, certainly not a tricked out Rangie for a kick-off! I've narrowed it down to these:

For every-day wheels:
http://pictures2.autotrader.co.uk/imgser-uk/servlet/media?id=be781b554f156c82c327ea39b954697a&width=1024&height=768

For blatting around Devon lanes:

for boat and countryside duties:
http://assets.bauer-wolke.co.uk/imagegen/p/black/1024/768/s3/digital-cougar-assets-uk/CCFS/2015/03/27/053441-57/52fbdef8-d568-402f-a877-48536944f209.jpg

for that long leisurely cruise down to the Med:

http://assets.bauer-wolke.co.uk/imagegen/p/black/1024/768/s3/digital-cougar-assets-uk/CCFS/2015/03/27/113906-5C/83e995ec-b9c6-4538-b7af-c385f75af3c6.jpg

and for the ultimate B road experience:

http://assets.bauer-wolke.co.uk/imagegen/p/black/1024/768/s3/digital-cougar-assets-uk/CCFS/2015/03/27/053225-5A/dd475bbc-cadf-4b6f-a86a-0999e022687a.jpg

That little lot comes out just south of £100,000.

Job done.

Not sure about the Citroen SM. Interesting car but that Maserati Merak engine is not the most reliable and fancy having the timing chain at the back of the block against the bulkhead. Try changing that without taking the motor out.

I think a lot of the issues with the SM motor have been sorted by various specialists over the years, I just find the whole concept so bizarre that it's irresistible. I've driven may miles in my brother's CX, and once you get used to that steering, you wonder why all cars aren't made that way.

Not sure about that Merc, it's a bit blingy for me, but the Caterham hits the spot!

Marco

Lol... Great idea for a thread! I'll need to have a think about it. Certainly, my 'everyday' car would be the one I've already got, as I don't really use a car for work as such.

Anyway, I'll mull it over and come back :)

Marco.

The S class Merc is a lovely cruiser. I would go for an older one though. I just couldn't be arsed finding a decent picture.
The G Wagon is built like a tank, and will go just about anywhere. The 5 wheel version of it looks fun too!

They do say that everyone should own an Alfa at some stage in their lives. The question is, which one? I might be tempted to replace the BMW with an SZ, but it would blow the £100,000 budget out of the water so probably the GTV6.

Oh good grief, that's not a Range Rover. It's a Range Rover Sport, which means it's basically a Discovery with two less seats and a fancy suit. It also appears to have been chavved beyond all recognition.

This, however, IS a Range Rover. A proper Graeme Hunt restored one and a fast one, too, as it has an Overfinch conversion with a 6.3 litre engine and over 400bhp. Sadly, its sale price of £36,500 was a little rich for me! :(

Some nice stuff coming through now, I could look at that Miura all day, and for £100k I could probably afford two door handles and a headlamp. If we're going to ignore the budget, one of these would be mandatory : http://www.autozine.org/Archive/McLaren/classic/F1_2.jpg

But the original premise was to fulfil all your motoring needs and desires for £100,000.

The research into current prices or values detracts from the fun of picking cars.. I've no idea of the costs (other than that McLaren is probably 8 times over budget)

And so does finding photos to post up! So I won't for everything..

Everyone needs a van! So I'd go for a cute Fiat 900 van lowered a bit with retro alloys (VW campers are passé).

A drivers car or two: BMW 2002 and perhaps also a Lacia Fulvia Zagato

Love an early Lotus Esprit for it's wedge shape.

And another car simply to enjoy a crazy 70s interior! Something like this Porsche 928 one:

I would actually like one of these one day to try out, perhaps not with this one's intake on the top but certainly with a Lancia engine plonked in (the original Fiat one is a bit low powered apparently). £12,000 ish was the asking price of this re-built Arbarth replica:

http://www.alfaholics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/x19-4.1.jpg

A Fiat X1/9 of course.

I've a retro racing magazine which test drives a version of the X1/9 to assess for privateer rallying - they found it so well balanced, that it was no good for rallying! Couldn't get it to spin the back out enough because the centre of gravity was too central. That's great for normal driving though.

I'm sure that's a toy one, which would fit within the budget, but a real one probably wouldn't - think they're into at least £250k+ territory these days. There are replicas of course..

But in real life, I'd have a fettered and wide wheel arched X1/9 over a Stratos. I could actually save up for the X1/9, fix it, drive it around town and afford to insure it whilst a Stratos I'd have no chance. Plus X1/9s come in targa form too for sunny days!

For the sake of being different, I'd get a Lancia 037 anyway if I could afford the Stratos, the Stratos's successor :

It was an SM exactly that colour that first turned me on to them. It belonged to a mate's father who lived in Liskaerd. Seeing it cruising through a quiet Cornish backwater in 1972 was a bit like coming across an unexpected UFO.

But look at the dash board on this citroen! From a GSA:

http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/193z48xg92kpwjpg/ku-xlarge.jpg

In many ways, the GSA was a more remarkable car than the SM. To incorporate that level of advanced technology into a family saloon would be amazing now, never mind forty years ago. Sadly, it wasn't the complexity that did for it; rather it was Citroen's insistence on building cars that dissolved in the rain. I was very tempted by this:

I don't think I'd get out of it - the world outside would be too bleak (not to mention seeing what it looked like to others from the outside...)

Isn't that pretty much what the Montecarlo was, ie an uprated X1/9 with a 2-litre twin-cam mill?

http://img.netcarshow.com/Lancia-Beta_Montecarlo_1974_1600x1200_wallpaper_02.jpg

They lost a bit of the prettyness somewhere though, especially with that black band around the nose.

According to wikipeadia, it is Bertone v Pininfarina , X1/9 being Bertone and Pininfarina the Montecarlo. I think the X1/9 was the better handling car though but the Montecarlo being the "premium" choice (which in my mind says heavier).

This Arbath version looks like a Delorian before it's time:

For that very reason, it was a toss-up in my list between the SM and one of these:

Yes please Shane. What fine taste you have sir. Sadly it makes the SM look shoddy.

Of all the cars in this menagerie of petrol head's wet dreams (and boy, some of them are bloody ugly), this is the only one mentioned that I have driven myself:

A Daimler 'Double Six', 5.3 litre V12.

Classy, if somewhat staid and old-fashioned.... :)

For me, nothing has gotten close to this beauty (posted earlier by Andre):

Or this, posted earlier by Geoff:

The original Maserati Ghibli. Which I think is just about the most beautiful car ever made.

Yes, I love that, too!

Btw, I can't really play the 'Dream Garage' game (and keep within the £100k budget), as I don't have a scooby-doo how much stuff costs... I just know whether I like it or not! :)

I've probably told this tale before, but I he only car I've ever driven that's likely to appear on anyone's list was this one, photographed in about 1976 in our back yard. It belonged to a mate of my brother's who bought it as an investment ( a novel idea on those days) and had nowhere to keep it. It sat in the back of our shed for a year or so while we tried to work out how to raise the £850 he wanted for it. I only drove it once, only firing on five cylinders and with no brakes to speak of, but it was a glorious thing, especially compared to the Wanstall HiFi Daf delivery van in the background that was my everyday transport at the time.

I love the engineering in bikes but they scare me shitless and I've never felt the urge to own one, but I might make an exception for this, purely for the loony engine:

I started off with a 1965 'Bantam D7' {175cc}, then i bought a 1964 'B40' {350cc}, then i bought a 1961 'A7' {500cc} & finaly the one i had accident on & vowed never to ride a bike again 1960 'Gold Star' {500cc}..I did want a 'super Rocket' but that never happened.

Indeed.... When the Zagato bodied DB4s were delivered to Aston Martin the British engineers were impressed by the sexy curves but less enamoured of the poor finish and metal working demonstrated . Each car required correction before it could be delivered to waiting customers. Having owned three Italian cars I can report that it has always been thus........

When I was young, I always wanted a Triumph 2000 auto, 'cos I loved the one my neighbour had. In the end, when I was old enough, I had one. lovely car, followed by a 2500PI, which was quick, but dire. Then a 2500TC. That was the best! I'd hankered after Opel Manta GTEs too. I had three. Plus no end of quick Minis. So much fun!! I seriously lusted after Kawaski H1 500 bikes as well. I had two (and an S3a 400).They were wicked! then, I'd wanted the Yamaha XS650 twin, I had one.

I seem to have owned nearly every vehicle that seriously took my fancy. Not got around to the Daimler Dart yet though and there's a really, really, big hankering for a Suzuki SV1000S that's been bothering me for a couple of years. I mean, look at the damn thing:

http://i59.tinypic.com/k4dpjm.jpg

1000cc of thumping rumbling V Twin. These sound superb and are plenty quick enough, 0-60 3.1 secs, top end 152mph. Light and compact too. Very Nice.

I should be sensible really. Most people would regard themselves as 'too old' for this sort of thing if they were ten years younger than me. But then, I'm not necessarily sensible or ready to 'give in and say die'! :eyebrows:

I bet if you sent them the photo in a letter, they'd invite you round as a previous carer of the car (didn't qualify as owner I'd guess). They'd also be shocked to get a hand written letter and get all nostaligic too.
