Bought myself a 2005 BMW E65 745i today and will collect it in 2 weeks once some BMW warranty work has been done re the gearbox

Will order myself an Eisenmann quad piped exhaust (true x pipe and lighter resonated) tomorrow and some new alloys and tyres for it (standard 19" Style 95's on it currently) but they're corroded to hell and prefer something a bit wider on the rear so will order some 20" alloys from BMAutosport too (10" wide on the rears, 9" up front)

I sold my E60 M5 3 months ago and have and looked at all sorts but just keep coming back to the luxury BMW autos... Can't cope with a manual any more. I'm trudging around in my MG ZT-T 190 which I've had for a few years as my second car. A V6 with a straight-piped exhaust which sounds great but it's still slow and still a Rover haha ;)

Anyways... Just wanted to brag as I can't wait! :D

Not an ad, was a private sale through a local BMW franchise as I'd been in a few times with my dad to perv over the Masarati's they sell alongside other nice marques!

Once I've got it and new alloys on I'll put up plenty of pics to show it off in all its glory :D

They would have done but just had an email to say they're out of stock of the right fitment/offset I was after as I'm lowering by 25mm so back to the drawing board!

Oh aye, I know that. Just sods law as I was hoping for my garage to be full of bits for when I get the E65 on my drive!

Fortunately I've found the alloys elsewhere and they have them in stock and will be with me on Friday and I'll get the tyres fitted then by a local specialist who can fit tyres to alloys without damaging them and than stating they're too big haha. Eibach lowering springs, polybush kit and 12mm hub-centric spacers will be with me tomorrow and will get an exhaust made by JP Exhausts in Macclesfield as they'll be able to sort some spots cats out for me too :D Keep my MOT fella happy then!

Marco.

No not yet. Going to leave it standard bar de-restricting the intake plenum/TB after the MAF, better ITG panel filters or maybe custom build a decent cold air intake and get the filter down behind the headlight and fed etc...

This and sports cats apparently releases the true potential of the engine, plus the standard exhaust is 55mm whereas I'll be going 60-62mm with 200CEL sports cats etc...

Have found a custom stainless manifold set from the States but at $3k I'll leave them be for now haha :D

From reading a lot and talking to guys on the Bimmerforums, the chipping of the 745 and 750 E65's doesn't do that much really, releases around 30BHP and 50'ish torques but that's for £500! A lot of £££ for not much more grunt!

Plus I've just ordered Ferodo DS2500 pads all round and MTEC grooved discs all round plus HEL stainless braided lines, the car will stop on a penny!

Face meet windscreen, windscreen meet face ;)

Nice one, Dan. Not tried ITG air filters, but they look good. I'm using K&Ns at the moment, which are probably similar, and for oil filters, WIX Racing.

Btw, dunno if you've played around with engine oils much, but if you haven't tried Valvoline Syn Power 5W30, I'd thoroughly recommend it: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-accessories/engine-oils-and-car-fluids/engineoils/5w30-engine-oil/?521770390&0&cc5_247, as I would Lucas High Performance Synthetic: http://www.lucasoil.co.uk/store_item.php?product=10206

Both oils give quite a bit more 'zip' than your standard stuff, from the likes of Castrol or Shell. How about fuels? I only use BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power Nitro+, with a touch of Lucas Fuel Treatment: http://www.lucasoil.co.uk/store_item.php?product=10020 The latter is a truly superb product, which I've found better than Millers. Gives you that bit more 'shove'.

Also, Super Coolants, such as this can give you a bit more power. I use this stuff in the Merc: http://www.lucasoil.co.uk/products.php?page=products&subpage=product&product=105

Tried putting nitrogen in your tyres? If not, pop along to your nearest ATS centre, and for £1.20 a tyre, they'll deflate your existing tyres and re-inflate them with nitrogen. Nitrogen inflation ensures correct tyre pressures are maintained for longer and improves the ride and handling of your car (at least it does in my experience).

Lastly, if you go on the Bimmerforums, check out a guy under the name of BM Wizard (Kevin). He's probably the UK's most knowledgeable expert on all BMW engines, and is a master at remaps/chipping and fitting bespoke stainless-steel sports exhausts. I *guarantee* that if you took your E65 to him for chipping/tuning, he'd get more out of it than anyone and you'd be left with a total ANIMAL of a car. This guy is top-notch!! :trust:

Website here (read what he says about chip tuning): http://bmwizard.co.uk/services/remapping-and-chip-tuning/

I can't recommend him highly enough. BMW enthusiasts travel from all over the country to use him, and he's a dead nice guy to deal with. He'll make your car 'sing' like never before :fingers: :fingers:

Cheers for all that :)

I generally stick to Fuch's oil, tried and tested for me and happy with the decent discount I get from my man at Opie Oils :)

I stopped using K&N filters a long time ago, their oil is well known to help clog up MAF's so I use ITG which aren't oiled at all but a very well made foam filter!

I only use VPower in my cars, even the current ZT-T V6 get's 1 in 4 tanks of VPower, but not every tank as it's tuned to 95RON - All other cars though have been remapped and only used on VPower, bloody costly but well worth it!

Yup, my guy who does my tyres for me uses Nitrogen as a lot of his clients race at weekends so it's for free ;)

CageyH

I think you will find that you need to oil ITG filters.
There are instruction on their website on how to do it. If you have not oiled it, you don't have an effective air filter.

Over oiling is the issue with clogging MAFs.

Yeah, I use Opie sometimes. Good service. You can get the Valvoline from them. Not tired Fuchs, but have heard of it.

No oil has been used on my K&Ns, nor did they come oiled. I just take them out now and then and hoover out any accumulated debris, then refit. They seem to work very well. However, I'll give the ITGs a go next time and see if there's any difference :)

I only use VPower in my cars, even the current ZT-T V6 get's 1 in 4 tanks of VPower, but not every tank as it's tuned to 95RON - All other cars though have been remapped and only used on VPower, bloody costly but well worth it!

I like a mixture (half and half) of BP Ultimate and V-Power, as that seems to give the best results in my engine.

The BP Ultimate gives a slightly 'peppier/more revvy' response, and the V-Power a smoother more effortless power delivery: the best of both worlds. If I use only one fuel or the other, I can feel right away that the specific benefits of the one not used are missing - and I've tested this over many months of driving.

Fortunately, I have both a BP and Shell garage within easy reach of me.

Yup, my guy who does my tyres for me uses Nitrogen as a lot of his clients race at weekends so it's for free...

This and the same with ITG

Just because they SAY you should do it doesn't mean you HAVE to!

I haven't oil any of my ITG filters in probably the last 6-7 years now and that's in cars ranging from a frankenstein K20/K24 Integra DC5 to my previous E60 M5 and I've NEVER had issues. But I HAVE had issues with oiled filters from the factory and not re-oiled by myself!

Well in all honesty I've found the Nexen 8000's to be bloody amazing, from there I've had AD08's and Toyo 888's on most of my cars as they generally only ever come out in dry, sunny weather!

I do like my Rainsport 2's and 3's and like the ContiContact Sports 3's and 5's as well...

I don't use or believe in RunFlat tyres so haven't used them for years and never had issues when I've swapped out RFT's for normal tyres and neither have thousands of other drivers... Just another massive £££ making marketing ploy IMO

Thanks for trying to teach me how to suck eggs...

If you read the instructions from the manufacturer(s) it tells you the risks of not oiling the filter.
You let fine dust particles through which will damage your engine. It relies on the oil coating above the electrostatic charge of the foam to retain the finer particles, but I guess you knew that, which is why you choose to ignore it?

I suggest you go start practicing the sucking of eggs. :ner:

Fully understand that but I've never lost a car yet on any tyre I've used. As long as the compound is right, the rating is right and they're in good condition I'm happy... Only ever swapped tyres once and that's because they got rave reviews but I found them to be totally shite in any weather but then again they were 'budget'!

Read what you want, believe what you want but until you've actually ran cars with these filters and not oiled them or you have oiled them, then come back to prove me wrong!

I know lots of folks that use ITG/K&N/AEM filters that don't oil them when it's recommended to do so and they've never had issues... Cars from AC Cobra replicas to as highly tuned E39/E60 M5's you can think of and beyond!

I used a non-oiled ITG filter on my K20/K24 DC5 Integra running close to 270BHP n/a and with a daft limit of close to 11k revs running Toda cams and a fully worked head and NEVER had any issues with drawn in dust particles... Impressive stuff. A whole 12 hours? That's a suitable sample time.
Even my lawn mower uses a K&N filter, so I have a bit of experience of them.
Did you remove the oil they use at the factory then?

It's your engine. My choice would be to replace a cheap MAF sensor, rather than an engine rebuild, but hey, what do I know? Let's just say I would not knowingly buy a car from you.

Just doing a quick search around for tyres, and it seems very difficult to find 225/R19/30/ZRs... No problem, with that width fitting, getting 30 profile tyres with 20" rims, or 35 profile tyres with 19" rims, but not 19" rims with 30 profiles.

Anyone got any reccos, in that respect?

I'll ask the car dealer where I got the car from where he obtained the new tyres he's just fitted to the rear, otherwise it looks like I'll have to go for 35 profiles next time.

Kevin, I'm no expert in this, but I used the K&N filters in my old Merc for 1000s of miles, sans oil, with no problems whatsoever. Indeed, Kevin (the very knowledgeable chap I was talking about before) recommended that. Therefore, mate, I can't see what the big deal about the oil is...

It all depends on the conditions you are using your cars in to how frequently you need to clean and re-oil them. If you don't oil them, you may as well fit a gauze filter, as it will effectively do the same job. Still, it's not mandatory, but as most filter manufacturers tell you to do it, I would suggest that it's a pretty good idea. It does not have to be done often. Over oiling a filter is not a good idea either.

I don't see the point in fitting a high performance filter, with good filtration properties if you are not going to use it properly. It's a bit like buying a decent cartridge and doing a half arsed set up.

Well that's the answer. I have cleaned them, as in both [it's a V6 engine], by simply vacuuming up any crud, but they haven't been re-oiled since they were done at the factory.

TBH, and I think we've discussed this before, we don't get that much rain here. I think there's a little 'micro climate' going on where I am. I agree Kevin, except I'd go as far as to say "....at all" in place of "....if you are not going to use it properly" plus not bothering to oil a filter which relies on it seems a pretty good way to increase engine wear by allowing more particles through to the fuelling system.

For the most part, the OEM paper filters flow better than most HP filters (when HP filters are oiled and have some miles under the belt) as long as they're regularly changed. I read an article a while back comparing airflow from OEM/K&N and a handful of other aftermarket performance filter brands. The OEM won out when new. They're cheap, so replacing every few thou miles if in dry or dusty conditions keeps optimum performance. Many modern engines can have issues with oiled filters that are over oiled as you hint at. MAF sensors don't like a covering of oil mist from over oiled K&Ns, Pipercross or whatever. Increasing airflow by increasing the size of intake ram pipes to the airbox is usually more effective where possible. I have two tuned vehicles, and wouldn't bother with any aftermarket filters for either.

Marco
14-04-2015, 18:09
I'm sure there's a lot of sense in what you say, Paul. However, in my car, there was a notable increase in performance [engine felt perkier] (and an nice 'thrum' added to the engine note) when I swapped the stock Merc air filters for K&Ns, so I can't complain :)

Marco.

CageyH
14-04-2015, 18:14
Some of the modern OEM filters also rely on oil to improve the filtration efficiency.
Blaming the air filter oil for MAF failure is laughable. If a filter is oiled correctly, no oil will be sucked out of the filter, even in fairly extreme cases.

I used to run my own rebuilt and modified engines without filters, just a couple of large bell mouths on the carbs (yes it was a few years ago) and never saw any engine wear at all and I used to strip the engines regularly. Most of the crap in the engine comes from the burnt fuel and oil anyway rather than being sucked in.

Yes, unless grossly over oiled. Never seen a MAF fail due to oil, but have seen some fuelling issues which were rectified upon cleaning the MAF and washing the air filter/re-oiling properly (a friend had over oiled the K&N fitted to his car...by quite a margin!)

The only one of mine to need oil is the one on the bike but that's a stock foam filter anyway, hence it's needed. No MAF there as it's straight to a Mikuni flatslide ;)

Here's the video that sold me the colour. The dealer says no one buys it that and they didn't have an example. I didn't go for the brown leather - when I sat in a 911 in that colour I didn't actually like it but it looks fine somehow in the video. I went for half leather in black and spent the money on active cruise instead (drive by radar - great when you are knackered!).

A coupé just wouldn't be practical for us, as we need a car that seats four people comfortably, has a large boot, plus the facility to put a roof box on top, for those wine-buying trips to France and Italy! ;)

The last Merc (the 'hearse') was an estate, bought for the same purpose, but we decided that we didn't *really* need an estate, and so this time went for a saloon. It was the Brabus sports engine conversion/body pack that sold the car to me though, and like you say it's mean, rather 'purposeful' looks...

I had 2 Merc SLKs from new before it - been driving those for 13 years. The most recent was a 3 litre V6 rated as 0-60 in 6.3.

When I got the Boxster and drove it round their Silverstone facility, I had serious, serious problems believing the Merc specs. The Boxy thing in practise is just massively quicker. Handling round corners is insanely good, no front engine lean.

Everything is an extra on a Porker though and you really have to watch the price. I sat there and configured one to over £80K on the Porsche website - for a plain old Boxster. Madness.

It is free but only with a new piece of pork. Otherwise I believe around £550 for a Boxster. Only for Porsches though. It isn't the standard Silverstone track, which I am sure you could take the Brabus on. Do it it is brilliant fun and makes you realise what a bummer real roads and speed limits are:D

Porsche have a large facility up there with all sorts of hazards (including water) and two race tracks albeit small ones. The 2nd race track was added recently. They get through £30,000 of tyres a month. Really!

There's around the best part of £10k of Brabus kit and mods fitted, consisting of full body kit (side skirts, sill skirts and rear valance, front and rear spoiler), lowered sports suspension, bespoke 19" black alloy wheels, D6 engine remap/customised injection system, quad stainless-steel exhaust system, tinted front and rear windows, leather sports steering wheel, bespoke Brabus control pedals for brake and accelerator, chromed/leather gear stick/knob, custom floor mats, stainless steel illuminated (with Brabus logo) front and rear door footplates, and chromed (with Brabus logo) front and rear door locking mechanisms, and Brabus bonnet and boot badges.

Yesh, the word 'BRABUS', in large letters, is illuminated at night in a rather cool cobalt blue, which stands out nicely, inset into the stainless steel door plates. Also when you open the car doors at night, it activates some downward pointing sill lights, which produce 4 individual blue beams of light underneath each door, so that (if you're pished, haha) you can see what you're stepping down onto.... :eyebrows:

Also, with the stainless steel quad exhaust system, the engine makes a nice 'thrummm' sound, when you start it up and while it's being driven, but it's not stupidly 'boy racer' loud: just a nice (but subtle) deep rasp, when you accelerate, which I suspect is reminiscent of one of your epic (and infamous) botty burps!

You mean the name 'Brabus' sounds cooler than 'AMG'? I suppose that's a matter of opinion. Much as I like AMG Mercs, you see quite a few them on the road, but hardly ever any significantly Brabus-modified Mercs - and you know I like to have something a bit different from 'the norm'! ;)

All the goodies probably make the car an extremely good buy TBH as I expect you did NOT pay a £10K premium for them on the 2nd hand market. Far, far less I expect.

Indeed (on all counts)... You never get your money back on that sort of stuff, but what does do is make the car bespoke/unique and thus increase its desirability factor for those who appreciate what it is.

I absolutely love it. It's a gorgeous thing to drive - 'sits' on the road so well, handles beautifully, and provides a suitable adrenaline rush in appropriate circumstances when you can 'give it some'... :eyebrows: What I am having to get used to is all sorts of folk stopping to admire it and/or ask me exactly what it is!!

Admiring remarks? I have had a few so far.

My fave is pulling up to a level crossing to be greeted by the simple prose of "tosser!". Accolades like that indicate genuine jealousy.

Next up I pull up to some light with 3 old guys in their 70s+. One says "what about the woman?":D.

Third up some Indian dude pulls up next to me and starts taking the piss. "Wow man - that car. It is sooooo f*cked up. It is soooooo nice. I wanna race!". Where upon he proceeded to not race. Loser:)

But basically I bought it to pull chicks. Waste of money so far...;)

Ha - perhaps the girlies will be more impressed when they clap eyes on your Apogees! :eyebrows:

You're right though, the waste of space fannies who call you a tosser would swap places with you in a nanosecond if they could... Best thing to do in that situation is toss them a pound coin and shout: 'Here, go and buy a bag of chips and have a wash!', then drive off.

They deserve to be treated with utter disdain! :D

Anyway the car...

I went 19 inch Boxster S wheels. The 20s on the car I test drove are 2K more than even that option. They make the car drive like it is on rails and yet it is still quite a comfortable ride. The cheaper 19s add a bit more comfort and still handle very well.

The manual was hard on the clutch so I went PDK auto which is easy to drive very quickly and gives you 4 different ways to change gear. As autos go it is alright.

Exhaust sounds are exceptional without sounding too wanker aftermarket 3rd party if you know what I mean. Hard to get right, this.

Seats for me are very comfortable.

Active cruise will get you through mega queues will little effort, or track the car in front of you like a hawk at any speed with an excellent guarantee you won't run into the back of him. Just choose your tailing distance.

Roof works to 31 mph and takes 9 secs. Nice feature. Rag top compromise though.

User211
19-04-2015, 19:08
The bad - the air con con. I didn't choose dual zone but what they don't tell you is that this option is open loop. Feels like you have gone back to the 70s manually controlling it all the time. Quite frankly unbelievable.

Engine is in the back and that means on a cold day a lot of piping has to warm up before you get warm feet.

Tyres on some motorway surfaces produce excessive roar.

Marco
19-04-2015, 19:33
All interesting stuff... The latter can sometimes be addressed by using a different make of tyres - some are defo quieter on the road than others. Michelins, Avons and Contis I find are good for that, as well as providing great grip.

Also, what's the profile on your tyres? Mine are super-low 30s, so you're bound to 'feel' the road more, and not always in a good way! The "roar" you describe, however, is mostly down to the type of road surface you drive on - some surfaces are unbelievably noisy

Marco.

User211
20-04-2015, 10:27
I believe it has summer tyres on. Good Year Eagle - the rears are 26540ZR19 98Y good to 186 mph.

They aren't that low profile TBH but they are good enough for Boxster S performance. However they are hard but even in the winter the grip seems awesome. You'd need a track to find out though - this is the first car I have owned that doesn't feel like you are pushing the car - rather the car is daring you knowing full well it can do whatever you want if you have the guts, LOL.

The wideness of the front ones means that turning tightly gives a kind of skipping effect. Bit disconcerting until you find out what it is. Really noticeable on bricked parking lots.

I'm sure a softer compound would fair better but last less long. I do a lot of miles in general so wear rates are important.

There's around the best part of £10k of Brabus kit and mods fitted, consisting of body kit (side skirts, sill skirts and rear valance), lowered sports suspension, bespoke 19" black alloy wheels, D6 engine remap/customised injection system, quad stainless-steel exhaust system, tinted front and rear windows, leather sports steering wheel, bespoke Brabus control pedals for brake and accelerator, chromed/leather gear stick/knob, stainless steel illuminated (with Brabus logo) front and rear door footplates, and chromed (with Brabus logo) front and rear door locking mechanisms, and Brabus bonnet and boot badges.

Indeed, and I will. However, I think there are stickers supplied, which will be stuck on appropriate parts of the engine to warn whoever is working on the car that it's running on waterless coolant :)

Just back from having the car Terracleaned.... WOW - what a difference!!

It's had the same effect as the last time: engine pulls better/harder, feels quicker and more responsive, runs more smoothly and sounds quieter. It's really quite an immediate and noticeable improvement. Fuel economy should also improve, and I'll be monitoring that on the trip counter over the next few days...

All in all, a very worthwhile exercise for £132. I'm delighted with the results

Now, I'm off to buy the Evans Powercool 180, in readiness for Kevin (the chap who works on my car) to install on Friday, along with the brand new K&N performance air filters I removed from my old car, so I've still got that improvement to come! Unfortunately, in terms of the Evans coolant, for my car I need 12 litres of coolant and the same amount of Prep Fluid, which won't be cheap.... Hey-ho!

I think he's referring to the Terraclean I had carried out on my car: clean engine, thus my 'act' has been cleaned up, too... It was a wee joke - bit of a pish one, though! :eyebrows:

Btw, I'd thoroughly recommend that you put your Beemer through the same process (simply google for your nearest Terraclean outlet), as I guarantee you'll notice a big difference afterwards in how the engine responds.

The point is, with second-hand cars, you don't know how well they've been looked after by their previous owners. Yes, the service history will tell you something, but not if various internal engine parts are clogged up with carbon, as a result of the cars in question having been run on cheap oil and supermarket fuel! ;)

The 745i buy is no longer :(

Warranty issues with previous owner and a gearbox fault that requires fixing and BMW have quoted £2k inc. labour... I'm not paying that and neither is the warranty (no ideas why as BMW Bowker wouldn't say/don't fully know)!

15 years old, though, so could have a catalogue of (expensive) problems lurking around the corner. Very low mileage, however, which is surprising. Wonder why the mileage is so low? It's probably worth £10k :)

I wouldn't give them the asking price, never have done. Cash is king!

Didn't get chance in the BMW yesterday as had to wait in all day for a 3T top soil delivery which didn't turn up until just after 6...

Going out in it tomorrow morning, the guys actually picking me up!

Going against my words as well I'm going to have a look at an S8 for sale locally... Looks unbelievably immaculate, the pictures he's sent makes it look like its never been out of the garage, still has the OEM underseal in place!

Nice one, mate. Sounds cool. Let us know how it goes :)

Btw, was at the garage yesterday and had the K&N air filters fitted, together with a WIX-racing oil filter, see here: http://www.wixfilters.com/Content.aspx?ct=rc

And that, along with installing the Evans Powercool 180 waterless coolant, has further increased engine acceleration and performance. The car's running like a dream now - well pleased!

Sounds like a good job well done!

I've put waterless coolant in my ZT-T 190; it's a Rover at the end of the day so likes to get rusty inside haha...

Did a full coolant flush beforehand and the stuff that came out was disgusting!

I use the onboard IPK system to look at the engine running temps every so often and it runs perfectly; when it had the standard OAT coolant in it always ran normal but too close to too high a temp for my liking!

Lol - very good! :D

I tried the Evans waterless coolant primarily to see if it would increase engine responsiveness and performance, and I'm happy to report that it does, although at some expense (around £200 for my car, with a 10.5 litre coolant system). The other bonus, of course, is that the coolant will last a lifetime, thus saving me money in the long run, as I intend to keep this car for a number of years.

Although the process is lengthy, for a large engine, of thoroughly draining out the old coolant, applying the prep fluid, totally flushing out all the old stuff, and waiting for the engine to cool down sufficiently in order to put the new waterless coolant in (yesterday with my car that took 5 hours in total), the results are well worth it.

When an oil change is next due, I'm going to give some Motul 300V 5W30 racing oil a go, which appears to be proven to further increase power. Watch an interesting video here:

The fact that you changed filters at the same time may have something to do with it?

Maximise BHP:

Evans Waterless Coolants eliminate pre-ignition and detonation caused by overheating - thus increasing combustion efficiency and delivering more power.

On the front of the container it also says: "Improves fuel burn for maximum BHP".

Cumulatively, that seems to be what's happening, as I can definitely feel the 'before & after' difference - and it's too pronounced simply to have come from just from an oil filter change [especially as the one that came out wasn't that old]! :)

I've also been researching tyres, as the rear ones currently on my car (fitted as dictated in order to pass its MOT by the garage that sold me the car), are cheapo Accelera ones, so not ideal. Well, they weren't gonna fit Pirellis merely to pass the MOT.... The fronts are rather nice Avon ZZ3s, with 6mm of tread still on them, so they're fine.

Therefore, I've ordered a set of these (race designed) Pirelli P-Zero Corsas, from Demon Tweeks, which handily is just down the road from me: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/tyres-2/pirelli-p-zero-corsa-system-tyre

Now that I've optimised the car's engine performance as far as I probably want to go, I need tyres to match! :)

Marco,

Pre-ignition on a diesel is not common as it's compression ignition. You also need to make sure that the car runs at the correct temperature, as over cooling is not good. If the car runs cool it will inject more diesel as a result. In normal road use I doubt that it will get too hot. If you are caning it round a track, then that's a different matter.

I think you will find that the biggest difference was the K&N filter.

I certainly agree that decent tyres are a must on a car with that torque and power. As for the oil, make sure it has the correct additives for road use on a diesel. I always found Opie useful in this respect. I'm a Mobil 1 user, as it does what it says on the tin. There are other oils just as good such as Fuchs etc. For me it comes down to availability. However, I always make sure the oil has been qualified for the correct BMW LL04 specs.

Anyway, have fun. Tinkering with cars is much more fun than HiFi.

Yeah, normally I'm the same... I know where you're coming from, but it would devalue the car, dude, if or when I sell it, as it's part of the modification package. Moreover, the name 'Brabus' is to car enthusiasts what SME is to T/T enthusiasts, so if you're into this stuff, it's all part of the attraction/desirability.

I should stress, however, that it wasn't the badges that sold the car to me, but how it looks overall, and most importantly, how it drives: pure grin-inducing adrenaline rush! [Although if someone said: 'Here, take this minto Jensen Interceptor instead', well................] ;)

Used to run Pirellis on my Mercs. They grip well, but the rears tend to wear on the central band you see on the tread pattern quite markedly quicker than the rest of the tyre. I was never really sure why.

Still got pretty acceptable wear out of them though so don't worry.

Hi Kevin,

Since the Evans has been installed, it's actually running a little hotter (which is predicted and expected). See here for a very interesting discussion about the Evans Coolant:

http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=86209&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Note this bit too, in terms of increasing engine performance:

More BHP

When water-based coolants vapourise adjacent to the combustion zone, hot-spots are formed. These hot-spots have been proven to cause pre-ignition in petrol engines and detonation issues in diesel engines. Evans Waterless Coolants eliminates hot-spots and subsequently improve combustion efficiency and increase power delivery.

Seems feasible to me.

I think you will find that the biggest difference was the K&N filter.

No, this is different, trust me. I'm familiar with the effect of K&N filters, and this is not that.

I certainly agree that decent tyres are a must on a car with that torque and power.

Indeed. Fortunately, since I've bought the car, all we've had is sunshine. However, it's due to rain again soon, so it'll be interesting to see how much grip the Acceleras have in the wet. The Pirellis will defo be better, though. I also haven't been anywhere suitable to 'try out' the car properly. However an imminent trip to up to Scotland will change that :)

I'll be taking it to Germany later in the year - now *THAT* will be fun.... Autobahn, here we come!!! :eyebrows:

One question as from a quick Google it seems really unclear.
What is Evans Power Cool made of?

Actually, I agree with the idea that you can never have too much power. Most of the quick things I've owned have been bikes though. Sub 4 secs to sixty gets to be a habit and you just know you can use a bit more.

Mind you, that's not quite the same thing as having more power than you need. If you just want to get from A to B and you can keep pace with motorway traffic, that's probably adequate.

Yep, that's what my car does now. It's a handful when it's damp. Getting to 100mph from 60 takes a few more seconds than getting to 60 from a stand still, so I guess a bit more power could be used.
More power would just make it more of a handful. I can break all of the speed limits in France in 2nd gear.
Why do I need more power? More grip would be better. ;)

It's always interesting when you put your foot down, the rear tyres spin and the back end starts going sideways.

One of my current cars is a small petrol engined, four door, four seater, that does around 70 mpg (claimed 74 mpg) if I take it easy, has zero tax and bottom rated insurance. It's a Suzuki Alto SZ that I bought new last year. It drives really well, very smooth and quiet, with good handling and roadholding. Surprisingly quick for its size too (0 to 60 is the same as my old Merc 190E). It doesn't use the dreaded timing belt either, just a good old timing chain driving the twin cams. It's no racer obviously, but I think it's brilliant (no good for big people though).
