Ariston RD 80 With SME Series III Tonearm

Been offered on of these @ £250 but its hardly been used in 15 years i am really not sure what to do is it worth it.:scratch:

Hi Dan,

Are both the T/T and tonearm in good nick, especially the latter? That is crucial.

If so, and you've got (or can obtain) a nice vintage high-compliance MM cartridge to use with the SME, then I'd say go for it, as the RD80 is a nice deck :cool:

Arms worth £200.00 bear in mind it's a low mass arm.

If it were me, after viewing it and confirming that both arm and T/T are in good nick, with everything working as it should, I'd give him the £250 (as Andre says, the arm alone is worth £200), then I'd send the arm to Johnny, at Audio Origami, for a full service and possibly a rewire - yes it will be worth it!

That done, give all the T/Ts moving parts a good oil, ensuring that the belt isn't worn or slack (if so, new ones are readily available, so replace it), then fit a nice high-compliance vintage MM cartridge to the SME, such as an ADC, Shure or Goldring, and you'll have a superb T/T, able to compete with modern stuff many times its price :)

As Marco says, check out the condition and if it's good bite the guys hand off. My only thought is I would take the arm to SME direct for any service. Then start looking for a Shure V15 III or a late M95 or even better if you can find any a JVC X1 or X2 in which case use fairy liquid instead of silicone in the damper trough, it works really well :)

The SME 'III' arm tubes disconnect from the arm. So it's a two part rewire. The arm wand's 4 pin connecting base is held on to the tube by tiny slot screw..Id try get a spare wand & re-wire them both at the same time.

Also check the plastic head shell as the fingerlift can get broken off easily.

That has to be worth having for the money. I'd service it myself, but not everybody would. The arm was designed with higher compliance cartridges in mind, but if fitted with the fluid damper, it can work with lower compliances. The headshell assembly may be light, but it is very rigid and high energy MCs should not cause undue resonances.

I actually sold My old Series 'III' as i prefered my 'S2, Improved' arm.. Two versions of that arm the 'III' & the Simplified 'IIIS'

Just looked its got a Linn XV II arm on it.........when they played a record on it man its gave me the bumps.........some really old blues stuff in the vinyl......:eyebrows:

youll need to sort out boxes or buy cardboard lengths and bubble etc and make your own..that way youll be able to sell your excess. being in Bournemouth is not very central for pick ups mate.

Bloody hell that looks just like my old RD80, same arm as well :eek::stalks:
Damn good turntable when set up correctly but just liken an LP12 you have to get it bouncing nicely and not binding on the springs.

That's a result, Dan. Knew it'd be a good T/T. The Linn LV V arm is also a goodie, so all in all, a nice combo. Enjoy! :cool:

Looks like a Signet 'TK3 or 5'.. You will obviously see the Model number when you take off the cartridge from the arm.. '6' is just the Styli not the cart.

I still not sure its set up correctly i might have to get someone to do it for me....:(

Any advice chaps i'm not used to linn tonearms i just need to know its set up right or its gonna bug me otherwise though sounds really good currently :eyebrows:
