Okay, so here's my stereo.

There's an old Lem processor that takes care of crossover and EQ duties,
A Samson Servo-550, for ~275w/ch into the Behringer B2031P monitors
A C.Audio RA3001 bridged into the subwoofer, which is a pair of JBL GTO1214s (the 2nd one fires backwards, giving force cancellation) in a small MDF cube. I've EQ'd it flat to around 15Hz - a pair of long-throw 12"s and 1.2kW gets somewhere near, especially with the small livingrooms of student houses.

The Samson amp has a dry joint in there somewhere - the right channel keeps dropping. I've a QSC USA-850 sat around that'll probably step in. Even more power - that'd come to 2kW, if only the speakers could take that long-term...

Subjectively, imaging is very good, partly due to the waveguides on the Behringer tweeters. There's a lot of info online about these monitors. Bass is, of course, solid.

Those JBL subs are rather good, aren't they? I have a similar one in my car (although I now have a different car to the one shown below)! :eyebrows:

Ketchup's a staple of student life - it covers burnt stuff and fixes anything that tastes bad.


I do quite like the JBL subs. They've stood some abuse - a 5Hz sine wave got them smelling very warm when I was using the Samson amp bridged into them - a mere 550w between the pair.

Anyone interested in seeing the PA system?

Get some lasers and smoke machines in there to impress all the student birds, failing that you can just wind up the subs and scare the pants off em!

What sources are you using here? File based or vinyl? I reckon all you need is a nice big reel to reel machine in there and you'll be fighting them off with a s**ty stick:cool:

Nah, that's what the PA's for. I use that at other people's houses, pubs, clubs etc - I don't want the police around...

I'm part-way between setups at the moment, but the subs will be impressive: I'll be using a quad of Beyma 15P1200Nd subwoofer drivers (1.2kW, 9.5mm Xmax) in two isobaric pairs. With a transmission-line design, I can get 129dB down to 40Hz in half-space, with a 70L cabinet. 135dB for a pair. That would require something that can swing 100v RMS, though, which is a bit of an ask.


I've an old Philips turntable here that used to live in Grandad's loft, but it doesn't get used very often. Usually just plug a laptop directly into the processor via the headphone out. It also allows people to plug phones in. Since there's no DVD here, the laptop often serves duty as the DVD player, with HDMI out to the telly.

one tip though: move the speakers off the sub, it should make the sound cleaner.

How would that work?

The sub uses dual opposed drivers, so there's no cabinet vibration at all.

None I can tell.
Both drivers are always moving in opposite directions, and the cabinet itself is solid.

Its similar to the B&W PV1 (IIRC), which uses a pair of 8"s.

Eventually I'd like to put the drivers in a bigger cabinet, once I've got my own place. Maybe infinite baffle or a really big ported box.

1.2Kw hell I can render myself deaf with 110w but then I have very efficient speakers compared with yours and I don't need a sub as my old Tannoy's go down to at least the limit of my hearing.

Tiny sealed boxes (this is around 1.5cu.ft between a pair of 12"s) are very very inefficient at low frequencies. We're talking 70dB@1w. Given 1kW, that's around 100dB, plus room gain. Maybe 110dB peaks if I'm lucky.

My PA is much more efficient. The compression drivers nudge 110dB@1w, and I can put 100w a side through those :D
That's 130dB 3' back from the speaker. Hearing protection all-round, methinks.
