Yeah but...as in 6 FLATS worth? Surely not...55K a year on CDs that you never play is nothing like so many people vinyl collections...no?

The Guy bought a flat and used every wall in that flat to store his CD's, even the loo and the kitchen, he ran out of space so bought the neighboring 5 flats, knocked through to each and has filled all of them with CD's! :D

Interesting documentary, thanks for the heads up - regarding "he never plays them" . . . seems not, but that's not why he collects them, he's building an archive. I can understand the addiction, it's the chase for many collectors, not the actual item itself.

Now I wonder how I can get a job as one of his assistants and turn that lot into FLAC files :)

Whatever keeps him happy, I guess. Me? I just don't see the attraction in collecting things that have an actual purpose, and then not using them for that purpose. I just don't get the mentality.

It's the same with folk who collect NOS valves, and put them inside cabinets, just to 'admire' them :scratch: Or daftees who collect umpteen different turntables, amps and speakers, but never USE them... ;) Hey, woteva floats ya boat, baby!

Aye, he gets my seal of approval there - I guess it's just a more civilised version of hoarding, the addiction must be the same. Instead of going round skips, boot sales and charity shops, he does it on-line and has it delivered!

Yup... I guess he could do worse things with his money. It would be an interesting psychology project for someone though, to get inside the heads of these guys and find out what makes them tick (essentially, what makes them do what they do)!

I just find it all bizarre..... It's got to be some form of OCD.

That's why i decided to sell my vintage stero collection. The penny dropped that hoarding them was nuts. Prices never increased over the few years i had them so i flogged the lot {nearly}..This is how out of control i was i realised i had no more than seven Quad '303'/'33's :mental:

However imho collecting CDs is pretty much the same as collecting junk really.

Think I have nearly all the cds I ever bought barring a few I gave away to folks. TBH I have too many now and half never get played now but they are like new and I hate the idea of putting them in boxes and never seeing them. I guess I probably need treatment too.

But they've got music on most of which will never have been on any other format and all the artwork is also unique to the CD format? I guess it depends if you're into the physical objects or into the music.

On a wider point, not just a reply to Barbarian's comment, I guess you could also say the same of this man as the British library and all its hoarding of books! What a load of junk!

At some point in time, some individual said "All these books are being discarded or left to rot! Someone's got to keep a record of it all, before it's all forgotten, it's culturally important!". Without googling the history of the british library, I'd guess it was some aristocrat with a mansion and lots of money to carry out his hobby/obsession/duty to human culture(? - prob as seen by himself) and history has celebrated the guy as a "great archivist". I would guess a lot of great archivists were also just regarded at the time as mad hoarders too.

This CD guy should just do it properly with other people and start up an institution. To me it's kind of a noble cause but I wouldn't advise doing it if you're not willing to sacrifice a lot and that it's pointless done half-arsed.

That's a very valid and important point , since the late 80's a large portion of music has only been made available on CD.
I was very much a vinyl man and refused to switch until 93 but there was a 3-5 year period that I missed out on and never quite caught up
