Well. my first visit to Scalford went very well indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and spent a small fortune on vinyl but hey, you only live once. Some fantastic sounds going on. The things that impressed me the most were not the ones i first thought. I was totally amazed at just how far the Project equipment has come on. I was bold over by the pre amp, transport and DAC driving the equally impressive Coral speakers. Beoblokes room i thought bijou well thought about and to be honest totally enjoyable. Listening to The Icicle Works on his Sony TT was a total joy.

I was totally smitten by the Windsor room guys with their veritable tape fest and Rogers LS5/2's which i instantly fell in love with. A couple of rooms featuring Yamaha NS1000 speakers also captured my interest especially the active ones. All in all a great day and it was great too to see some familiar faces there. There was so much to see and rooms i didn't get back to which frustrated me to be honest but the truth is we just ran out of day. A great event, well organized and in a great if not out of the way location. Great to put a face to some names too. Here are just a few of the things that really intrigued me......

Hope you don't mind me tacking onto your thread Steve but it was my first visit as well. Very good to meet up with you and others, I had a good chat to Lurcher as well.
Only a couple of photos, and I wasn't as conscientious as making notes of who or what I was listening to :scratch:

A real shame the window was directly behind as the shot is very dark but you couldn't say that about the sound, very good indeed.

This setup really impressed me as it worked exceedingly well in the room, some of the rooms were very lively acoustically. It was quite noticeable how things changed depending on the number of people in the room.
A couple of the systems were far too bright for my liking and one room was so freaking loud as to be :mental:
Great to have visited and met up with fellow AoSers, but I missed out on my pint unfortunately, even though I did my best:

Gosh - thanks from Matt (the speaker designer/builder) and me. :) - you can just see my lovely vintage Rotel amp peeking on the left. ;) Although the speakers were mainly driven by my NAD S300 amp.
Yep, a lively room - but a nice lively sound, too! - as you say, once there were a load of chubby audiophiles in the room it was even better and lost a slight zingy edge. :eyebrows:

Hi Alan,
Thanks for letting me try the phono stage, I forgot to mention I lurk on here sometimes, (you met me yesterday as dipstick and your wife was most impressed with my 3 boys masses of hair) the stage sounded great and I'd like the chance to try it aainst my current one to see if it a) sounds better and b) helps cure the inteference i get a lot of

you will need to force flash by setting it to on and not auto :eyebrows:
so far not a bad word about the day out...which makes a change. one of those days i might make one of those days.:)
Unfortunately, the ugly speakers and NAS Spacedeck were mine but, the AudioNote was Pete's who I was sharing a room with, my amp at home is a Puresound 2A3, not too shabby but no Ongaku.....
Is the 2 a big step up? I'm on the waiting list for the original if that's alright with you?

The 2 is a big step up Des; as one of the listeners in your room remarked 'there's a lot of foo in there' when I had the bottom off to alter it to MC.
Seriously though it is a progression from generic quality parts to audiophile quality where it counts, plus separating the psu.
The best comparison so far was between Gazjam's Firebottle Plus and Ali's two box (which the FB 2 is based on), with the reaction WTF in favour of the two box.
You are more than welcome to be on the original Firebottle loan list, see how you find that to start with :)

It was Andre. I spent some time in there ant it was one of the most pleasing sounds of the show.
That Rogers/Quad Tape Rig is well nice.. Id have probably spent all day in there

Great to finally meet you face to face. Thanks for bringing along my Firebottle 2, which by the way has to have been the most unconventional mode of delivery yet if not the most original. Sorry i didn't get to chat but they was still so much to see before our departure. I had a great time and fell in love with a few things not least the Rogers speakers in the Windsor room. I will be in touch in the next couple of days.

Not my first visit, but the Scalford show is always good fun, with a good variety of out-of-the-ordinary systems. First saw AOS exhibiting there a few years ago, which got me posting on here :)
Particularly impressed this year with a couple of active systems I heard, one using small Linn speakers, and the other a pair of very nice DIY three way speakers. The reel-to-reel room was also top-notch IMO.

My first time also and well worth the trip up from the South West.
I particularly wanted to hear the Bastanis Wildhorns as I have their open baffles. It was a bonus to spot the Firebottle two box phono on the floor and then discover Alan was sat behind me. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the loaner in a few weeks.
Good to meet Soulman and Alan and listen to the great sound being produced.

I was going to but you had a few people in your room and i didn't want to disturb the proceedings. My colleagues wanted to move on just as you were about to play your Pioneer with the linear tracking arm which i really wanted to stay and listen to. The Sony sounded great though. Next time i bump into you i will introduce myself. Fab sounding gear you have though sir.

The BBC LS5/2 was the last of the 'Flat' BBC monitors apparently. After this the 5/8 (and 5/9 it seems), deviated downwards a little in the upper ranges for some reason - polypropylene colouration perhaps (I believe the LS5/2 was Bextrene cone based)?

You are right all the way David. However, my mistake. It was actually the LS5/8's used by Lodgesound.

Thanks for the kind words Paul, I love them as well and am always genuinely surprised when some people are not as keen. Just shows the difference between ears and what people like....
A little tip for a Lodge Sound experience. Go to the show on Saturday, wait until everyone else is in bed, then go into their room in darkness and choose the best seat in the room. Awesome!
I was also bowled over by that room, and the guys are really passionate about their setup. Just wish I could replicate something similar at home.

Knock all the downstairs walls out, dedicate the whole room to hifi, send a fortune on reel to reel and voila! Job done....

Even with all the walls knocked out (only 1 left anyway) my room is still a mere cave compared to the Scalford hangar rooms!

I, too, was very, very impressed with their R2R stuff. I'd love to go that route, but am always wondering where you'd get the 'software' (presuming we weren't just listening to tapes of CDs).

Occasionally you can find some studio tapes for sale, but one always worries about tape shed etc. Alternatively if you have very deep pockets, you subscribe to the Tape Project, where you get a single album on two 10.5 inch reels of 1/4 inch taped recorded at 15ips. It ain't cheap, but it's meant to be the dogs boll**ks. I have a 15ips Revox G36 at home, waiting for when the lottery win comes in. I could be waiting a while, as I never buy a ticket :)

and it was good to see one of the worlds greatest pre amps atop your kit , the mfa baby reference . shows passives are superb pre amps
