So here’s a strange one….I just bought a little T-amp for the princely sum of £37.00. It’s an SMSL SA-36A Pro 2. It seemed to be getting very good reviews online and I needed a second small sound system so I thought I’d get it to drive a pair of JBL control 1’s that have been knocking about not doing anything. Had just picked it up from the Collect Plus point when about 60 seconds later I noticed someone had left out on the street what appeared to be a pair of dinky little filing cabinets in clean condition. Upon closer inspection, they turned out to be a pair of speakers.
There is very little information about these strange beasts online. They are Nordmende LB 7000 omni-directional speakers. I did find a couple of pics of them which I’ve posted here: As you can see, they have a 6” downward-facing bass driver raised off the ground by a (rather flimsy) plastic rail and in the top of the cabinet a tweeter pointing upwards at a ‘UFO’-type thingy. Presumably this device reflects the sound somehow.
So anyway, hooked them up to the SMSL expecting no sound whatsoever, and lo and behold they sounded OK. All the drivers appear to be working fine: bass response was very good, tight and detailed (I’m playing FLAC files off my Mac at this point, straight out of the 3.5mm jack output) but the midrange and treble were weak. A little software EQ tweak fixed that. They are now sounding pretty decent, and sure enough, they appear to be ‘omni-directional’ as stated, i.e. the sound seems consistent wherever I stand in the room.
They are bloody loud too. The SMSL is turned up to about 25% of its full volume capacity and the bottom end’s kicking like a mule. I’ve only managed to find a few posts about them online, all of which I had to translate from German: they are rated at 120W, but I’m curious to know what db rating they are and what year they were made, so if anyone has any info on these I’d be grateful. Cheers chaps.

What a brilliant 'find' there Kevin, I wish I'd found them.

The reflector above the tweeter just acts like a sound 'mirror', so being a cone covering 360 degrees gives the omnidirectional sound.

Thanks Alan....you don't happen to know when these were made do you? I think they would have been made in Bremen, but don't know what year. I think maybe eighties??
