My Sugden A21a is away on loan to a friend.

I'm expecting an Exposure X Integrated amplifier, which is currently on its way. If all goes well with the Exposure. I will take some pics and upload them here on this blog.

As some of you will already know. The X comes from an era when John Farlowe was working at Exposure in Portslade, West Sussex. Anyway, we're talking well over 20 years ago now.

IMO the X is a stunning little thing, and I've owned 2 in the past. If you favour a musical, direct, punchy sound. This amp will tick those boxes! Its never too analytical and just carry on with the music!

Will keep blog posted!

Will give it a decent listening session tomorrow evening.

Will keep blog posted.

The Exposure & Sugden are just simply different, Geoff.

The A21a is a very respectful amp. I will only sell it to buy the IA-4!

The Series 2 sounds similar like its predecessor. With this version you get more cleanliness and weight.

The bass is perhaps a bit more controlled too.

This amp defiantly does show up a bad recording!

Like all Sugden Class A amps...It runs hot!!

Without a doubt, a very good amp with a neutral (lack of character) sound!

My recently purchased Sugden CD21 Series 2 arrived to me this morning.

Below is just some of my views on the aesthetics quality...

The feel and build quality of this CD21 Series 2 is a tad on the weedy side...It just doesn't feel very substantial IMO. But Its put together pretty well though.

I guess some could perhaps label this CD Player as having ''average'' or ''basic'' build quality. Which I can understand. But I sincerely do hope the quality of the components inside are of decent high quality. The transport mechanism is most likely of hair shirt side of quality!

To buy this CD Player brand new from a dealer, will cost you almost £1,600!....Hmmm interesting!

Visual wise, this is actually a pretty handsome looking CD Player. Elegant appearance and fairly easy on the eyes. The blue display is pretty cool and doesn't glare at you!

Will be having a good listen shortly!

A bit earlier than planned...

I've just bought a Rega Brio-R, instead of buying it in a couple weeks. Will be arriving to me later this week!

This wee amp seems to be popular over on PFM. On there it has received good opinions and praise for its musical sound. This especially coming from some ex Nait owners! But some others still prefer the Nait's more outgoing sound!

Will report back my findings, along with some pics very soon.

The Brio- R arrived this morning.

The build quality is damn bloody good for an amp costing well below 1k new!

The unit feels nice, and has a rather good weighty feel when picked up. I rate the Brio's build quality equal to the likes of Naim.

Will have a listen later and hopefully report back my findings.

I have reverted back to the Naim Nait 5i. This time being a 2006 model.

The 5i does indeed carry a slight controversial reputation. Some love it, Some hate it! But I appreciate its ''groovy'' musical presentation. I also find the bass performance from Naim amps ''grippy'' but yet tuneful! Just my opinion of course.

Last week I collected a nice Naim CDX...which I believe was built in late 2000/early 01. The build quality is simply stunning. I can only describe the sound with one word-Dynamic! This CD Player has plenty clout in the bass performance. Detail retrieval is deeeep! I suppose its character is like a good Decca cartridge.

This morning I received a pair of Mission 760i bookshelf speakers. They date from the early 90's and look well made.

Will follow soon with some pics.

Had a little afternoon session listening to the DAK Novo.

It looks nice, and feels smooth. The big advantage, is the sheer small footprint. You can place it anywhere, especially in tight spaces. Its very light too!

The sound is a tad difficult for me to describe at the moment. For now, I'll just perceive it as neutral sounding. There is a lack of character. This headphone amp is capable of just letting the source or headphones shine their own colour.

I might again write some more on this combo soon.

The system combo is pictured below.

Headphones: HD650
Amp: DAK Novo (Graham Slee) with basic ''wall wart'' plug.
Interconnects: NVA Sound Cord
Source: Sony PS1 (SCPH-1002)

Reunited with this Alchemist Kraken. This is the early MK1 version in Hammerite finish.

Back in its heyday. There was the main ''upgrade'' option for the Kraken. This was by simply having a second transformer. But of course, at an extra cost!

This one currently just has the one transformer.

Without a doubt this is indeed a lovely, musical sounding amp. It reminds me of the Sugden. If just a little more smoother, and perhaps rounder in its presentation.

Will be keeping the Kraken to use in a second room.

I've only just acquired a pair of Usher S-520 Speakers in wood veneer. Without their grills, they present a distinctive appearance with those transparent drivers.

They remind some people of the ProAc Response 1SC. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ushers sounds similar!

I'm also awaiting for a Sugden A21a integrated. This is now going to be my 3rd A21a! Great little amp. I always find them rather clear sounding. Not the stereotypical warm and lush sound that some perceive it as.

I have had the S520s for many years. I found them to be very good with Naim Nait 5i and also with my Nait 2.
Naim amps tend to make the ushers less sweet and a bit more raw and lively which suits my taste.
Very well built and exceptional speakers for the money

Had a 2 hour listen to the Ushers.

I find the tweeter a bit revealing for my personal taste. This can lead me to listener fatigue.

The bass is a tad too strong for both of my rooms.

They would sound much better in a larger room. I can also see these Ushers responding well to some ''heavy'' high mass stands! (Target)

Time for a blog update :)

The Roksan Kandy KA-1 LIII was my first proper amplifier back in the early mid 2000's. Excellent build quality and you certainly get some heft whilst lifting the unit. The weight comes in at around 12-15kg! Thanks to that decent sized transformer!

I fancied going down memory lane and recently acquired another Kandy. A decade later, and this amp still doesn't disappoint!

The sound from the Kandy is not the most sophisticated and refined. Especially, when compared against with some of its competitors.

This amp aims more towards the PRAT and boogie factor listeners. Describing the Kandy's presentation is like a cross between a Naim and Exposure. So, I guess the sound sits in the middle. But happy to stand corrected!

I'll try and get some pics up later.

If you're still on the hunt for top quality small speakers that won't boom. Keep an eye out for Cura CA5s. They're rare, but could be just what you've been after. Sealed cabinets and top notch, but smaller drivers. I had a pair, not a hint of boom no matter where they were used.

If you're still on the hunt for top quality small speakers that won't boom. Keep an eye out for Cura CA5s. They're rare, but could be just what you've been after. Sealed cabinets and top notch, but smaller drivers. I had a pair, not a hint of boom no matter where they were used.

Thanks, Geoff.

Never came across the Cura CA5 before. How much do they normally fetch?

Another small speaker I like are the Neat Petite. The last pair I had were the mark III. Might consider looking for another pair soon!

Hard to price really as they come up for sale very seldom. I'd say between £70 and £120 a pair at a guess. I think I paid about £100 for mine.

Might be worth checking dealers. It's the sort of quality used speaker they'd stock.

Will give those CA5's some thought, Geoff. I like the idea of them being sealed. Do they suffer from air leaks with age?

No, they're very well made.

The tweeter is a 3/4" silk dome that I believe was also used by Chario and Sonus Faber. The bass is a 6 1/2" treated poly unit.

The Roksan Kandy KA-1 LIII ... This amp aims more towards the PRAT and boogie factor listeners.

Yep, exactly that, ime that is the house-sound of Roksan, full-on and overflowing with rhythmic swagger! I reviewed (http://hifipig.com/roksan-caspian-m2-integrated-amplifier/) a Caspian M2 integrated for Hifi Pig and it did rock and dance right well -- but I wouldn't choose it for classical, just too up&at'em. :)

Nice little write-up, Jerry.

On paper, the Kandy amps employs a bigger (500va) transformer than the Caspian. Even the first generation Kandy amps say 500va transformer on paper.

Could this possibly mean, the Kandy has more damping factor and control than the Caspian?

Hi Shane

I'm new to this forum and Jollyfix (apologies dont know his real name) suggested I get in touch with you. I'm interested in buying an Alchemist Kraken integrated Amp (preferably Mk1) and it was suggested that you might have one for sale? Apologies for wasting your time though if its already been sold or you've decided to keep it.

Yep, the only Linn gear I can stomach are the CD players and my lovely VdH tipped Asak cartridge. I had a Karik mk2 cdp for quite a while and it was a fine sounding machine.

My Roksan is currently being borrowed to be used in another system.

For the time being I'll be using my backup Quad 303 power amp.

For the last 2 hours I've been listening to the Quad, driving a pair of Neat Critique II speakers. CD Player is the Linn Mimik, The control is just a single in/output volume pot in a box. Cables are NVA LS3 speaker wires. Interconnects are Klotz MC5000/Merlin Elgar.

I can't really describe the sound I'm experiencing. At a guess, the best description is slightly ''chameleon like'' added with a touch of ''matter of fact''. If the album is white, the system performs out in white. The other album could be black, the system performs out in black.

I'm still trying to adjust to the Quad 303's slightly laid back bass. But I'm liking its almost ''fit and forget'' kind of sound. To a degree I can understand why some studios use Quad amps!

So, any album with a nasty/good recording, will come out like it is with this system.

Neat have always made fantastic speakers. All the Neats I have heard are fast, dynamic and explicitly musical. Neat speakers sound just a tad like Royds, but more sober :)

Ah. If you're finding the bass a bit reticent, that seems to be a characteristic of some pot type passive pre-amps with some power amps. A TVC will probably give you the bass back and better dynamics.

Listened again to this system. The bass is certainly NOT lacking. That slight softness (or warmth) is still there, but not aiming too much towards mushy.

The 303 with a passive can indeed return good results.

I've sold the Neat speakers to help my mother's finances, and will be reverting back to my good JPW's.

The Roksan might possibly go up for sale soon. Which is going to be a slightly hard decision!

I used to own the Jap Crap Denon PMA-350se and remember how decent that amp sounded. I'm thinking about getting another one, and to also revisit its lovely simplicity and sound.

The Denon, will certainly not give me that ''iron fist'' bass of the Roksan though!

Is it an original or a mark 2 or 3? The UKSE was the one I had and it is still one of the best amps I ever owned. A bit lean -I know Geoff said 'gutless' but that's a bit of an exaggeration I think. Cd with the Cd direct engaged (of course) was lovely.

Mine developed a fault - intermittent cut out on one channel - i.e the worst fault any amp can ever have. I couldn't get anyone to look at it but a pal had it off me and got it fixed. He used it with a NAD CD player and some little Wilmslow Audio standmounts and again it sounded mint. But he was burgled and it was stolen. Probably still out there somewhere.

I bought a brand new MK2 expecting it to be even better but it was blander than shepherd's pie.

That's the next version after the one I had - the older version had volume on the right and white markings not red on the dial. Overall it looked a bit cruder. I've not heard that version. Looks in good nick.

This is the version - except mine was a 'UK' version and had 'UK' on the fascia at the top and this one doesn't. But these are the ones to try. If you want the bigger PMA350 the ones with this styling are the better ones also in my experience.

Whatever they changes from the original to the Mk2 it ruined the amp. More bass but fuzzier and the overall sound was more veiled. I think most of them sold here in the UK of all marks were the 'SE' version but no idea what that entailed. A lot of the time it doesn't mean much.

Those little Q-Acoustics speakers can benefit from surprisingly good amps - and the more oomph the better, they do take quite a lot of controlling and driving, they can sound limp and lifeless if underpowered. Probably a good candidate for your muscle-bound Roksan integrated, Shane.
Richard/Gromit had his Qs driven by a big Sony ES amp at Scalford - and they just thrived on that! A visitor said he had the same speakers but with a small amp and they didn't sound anywhere near as good as Richard's. He was quite downcast about it!

Well, I should bloody hope so, Jerry. That 500va ''NORATEL'' transformer of the Roksan should do a decent enough job.

The Denon PMA-350se has landed here at Shane's shack!

Looks in clean condition, and is in good working order. This particular example doesn't have a phono-stage. Which, to be honest doesn't bother me much....not a huge fan of vinyl anyway!

This is indeed my second 350se! My first one, I sold back in 2013 to an AOS member. I can't recall his name... I've met his son once, on the day when he came to collect the Denon.

I can't detect much difference in weight, when compared to the 250se. But, I can just only slightly feel more weight from the 350se...from the left side where the transformer resides. Same as the 250se.

Will try and have a better listen tomorrow.

My only criticism with these Denon amps. Is that the volume gets pretty loud at already 9 o'clock.

Which really doesn't surprise me, as the input sensitivity is around 150mv.

S.

DSJR
13-03-2016, 17:01
That could have been adjusted internally, but you see Shane, people think there's more power when it's loud at 9 o'clock on the control. I don't remember what the output level was on their cassette decks and tuners, but it may well be lower, in which case, for the same volume as CD, the volume control may be set at eleven o'clock or even higher...

southall-1998
13-03-2016, 22:12
Only had time to listen briefly to the 2010i's.

The 2010i's are sometimes selling, for the same price as an average sized grocery shopping. This represents a good bargain.

As I repeat, the build quality is excellent, giving out a robust and solid feel.

The sound I'm hearing is tight and lean. But yet very musical. To a certain degree, the sound reminds me slightly of the Mission 751's.

Hmmmmm....wonder if my room will get away with the 3020!

S.

southall-1998
17-03-2016, 16:40
The ATC SIA2-150 arrived to me this afternoon.

Just for now. I'm only going to give a slight impression on the build quality.

Weighs in at a hefty 19kg, along with that famous ATC build quality and feel. Seriously, I had to wrestle the SIA2-150 out of its box before plunking it down on my platform :).

This amp contains quite a hefty transformer inside. Which indicates a sign of power and control....This can be a good thing!

S.

southall-1998
17-03-2016, 23:52
Had a brief listen to the SIA2-150.

The sound I guess, is a tad similar to the Roksan Kandy. But a bit more civilised and smoother. The ATC has more of a Pure ''Class A'' revealing sound than the Roksan's more ''flat earth'' approach.

Will report more soon.

How does it compare to the PMA-350SE Shane?

southall-1998
18-03-2016, 00:07
It's early days to make a full judgement.

For now. I will say the ATC has more clout, control and dampness over the Denon. The Denon is more airy and slightly more musical.

The only crap analogy I can give, is like comparing two tonearms. The ATC is like an SME Series V, The Denon is like an old school Rega R200.

There's always a trade of Shane , isn't there :)

southall-1998
24-03-2016, 22:40
The bass quality is fantastic. Plenty clout, control and pace. I suppose this ATC, is a little bit like a big Naim amp, but without the ''overly forwardness''.

The most important and noticeable thing about this amp, is the almost lack of character.... and the revealing sound it produces. Anything good/bad in the system and recording, will all be exposed very much in a ''tell it like it is'' manner- This, I will have to get more accustomed with.

Now I could be wrong here. But, I think this ATC amp might be a tad too powerful for the little 2010i speakers. Don't get me wrong. The sound is very good, as long as I don't blast the wee Q's.

Just one damn problem I'm experiencing. The mute button on the remote, refuses to work with the amp. I don't know why, or the cause of it?. But hey-ho!

Good sounding amplifier! With excellent sound, and solid engineering.

Some crappy pics below.

Still using the Sugden A21a integrated amp. This particular 'Class A' amp is always a musical listen, as per usual!

I always had a little 'soft spot' for the Audio Note AN-J speakers. This pair we have, employs basic internal wiring, and caps in the crossover. Someday, I hope to try the more uppity AN-J/SPX.

Just recently acquired this Topping TP60. Haven't had much time yet to listen.

Surprisingly, the unit is damn heavy for its compact size!! Very nice to look at, but the blue light I find, just a tad obnoxious. I've read many positive user comments that this amp can drive a wide range of speakers. Considering it has two hefty transformers inside!

I've had two Cyrus set ups in the past and I like'd them a lot but in the end the clear and clean sound got little boring. Especialy the "better" set up. And 6/8cd se mech had troubles with ejecting disc's.

Spent a little afternoon yesterday, listening to the Cyrus. The sound is precise and lucid. Bass is lean with good pace, rhythm and timing. These amps are certainly, very slightly voiced on the brightly-lit side. They do pack a good punch!

Very nice to look at, but the blue light I find, just a tad obnoxious.

Shane I have some LightDims which cover over bright LED's, like these:

If I can find them you are welcome to a few of them if you would like

BUMP!

Just recently acquired this Topping TP60. Haven't had much time yet to listen.

What did you think of the TP60, Shane?

I must admit I found it a bit boring.

Cyrus CD players tend to sound decent.

I auditioned the Cyrus CD8 and the Arcam CD92 and also the Meridian 507 at Audio T years ago. It was an interesting comparison. You can guess which I bought.

Correct!

The Cyrus came a close second to the Arcam, which just edged it on transparency, but not by much. Both were very good. The rather more expensive Meridian won though.

Indeed, the 507 was very expensive back in its day.

(I think) my CD7Q sold around £1,100-£1,200 back in 2002. Pricey! The ''Q'' came as an upgrade option, if you had the CD7.

Always found Cyrus to have good rhythm and timing.

I think I paid about £1250 for the 507, so not much difference.

I'm currently trying out some Cyrus. The combo is the 8VS2 with PSX-R power-supply.

Sound wise it's damn clean and very lucid. Bass is tight!

Some updates on my little Hi-Fi journey.

I've sold the Naim CD3.5. Now, please don't get me wrong. The CD3.5 is a goddamn musical, and solid sounding machine! I'll indeed rank it, as one of my top favorite CD Players!

The problem, is sometimes our house electric power is prone to tripping. The Naim really needs to be left on 24/7. Plus, I don't like having to keep switching the Naim off/on too often.

My bedroom system is now a simple headphone setup. Consisting AKG K701, Heed CanAmp, Rega Planet MK1. I don't listen to headphones that often nowadays! Need to go easy on the ears......Thanks to a piece of shit called tinnitus......Have had it since 2012.

In the rear Garden room, I share a spare system along with my Dad. Consisting Dali Opticon 2, Cambridge Audio CXA60, CXC Transport, Rotel T14 Streamer.

Must say that Dali make nice sounding speakers!!

To my ears, the Asgard 2 is more fun, enjoyable sounding, than most other headphone amps I've had. Detail is sharp, without being overly ear-piercing.

One rip-off example, is the Sugden HA-4. To my ears, it just doesn't sound like a £1,700 headphone amp. The Sugden just sounds average and overly 'solid state' for my liking.

As I said just the other day, I find headphone amps much of a muchness personally... My Sennheiser HD580 cans are so easy to drive (300R load) that anything drives them just great, from the headphone sockets on my laptop and PC to the sockets on CD player to a high end class A headphone amp of my own design... No more than inconsequential Nth degree differences between any of them! YMMV.

I don't like to use the headphone socket on amplifiers... but I'm sure the Teleton would sound just fine :D

Seriously though although I'm not saying there are no audible difference between say plugging the phones into a laptop or using a high end head phone amp I would not sat the difference was large or of any real consequence...
