I like Free, and have many of their albums, but I couldn’t have told you who their drummer was.

fair point Marco, i only just found out,, and wanted to let others know,assuming people who knew who he was would read, people who didn't would not be that interested. Next time i will give more info at start of thread.

So sad today. Free was the first band I ever saw live. Imagine the impact of a band like that in a venue not much bigger than an average village hall (the wonderful Van Dike club in Plymouth) on a shy 17 year old who was previously into Simon and Garfunkel and had no experience of rock. I was taken by a bunch of mates and had no idea what to expect, and finished the evening sitting on the edge of the stage with my back leaning against a bass stack that seemed enormous. Definitely the most significant musical moment of my life. RIP Andy, and thanks for all of it.

Just realised that was 45 years ago this Saturday. Jesus wept....

Remember All Right Now was kept off no.1 spot by Mungo Jerry , travesty in my view. Always liked Andy's way of playing ,almost like a lead guitar style ,complemented Kossoff perfectly.Was 14 when A.R.N came out ,and Free have been there ever since with me and were a major influence on my musical "growing up years" .Sad to hear of his passing and symmpathies his family and those who were close to him , a sad day.

I remember Medicine Head and 'One and one is one' as I must have been about 14 years old at the time. My God how time flies. It really does seem so long ago.

On the strength of seeing Free, I went to the Edgar Broughton and Black Sabbath concerts on that flyer. One hell of a month!

The Vandike was an amazing place, tucked away in the arse-end of Devonport, it was about 80' x 40' with a bar at one end and a tiny stage at the other. But just look at these flyers:

I saw Medicine Head there with one of my mates. Hitching back home that night we were picked up by a battered old Austin J4 van. John Fiddler driving, Peter Hope-Evans in the passenger seat! Good times...
