Might give it a go. Does anyone here use one of these devices already, and if so, how simple is it to install, how consistently well does it work, and are there any negative aspects to its use?

Marco.

Not seen that one before. There have been various end of side arm lifters in the past though. I don't recall any adverse comment.

Nice. This sort of seller really annoys me though. Postage to the UK is entire reasonable but to France!! Ha! I can get a 2 foot long tune from the Uk which weighs a bit for £5 postage. How come this little widget is going to cost over £20? It needs the same packaging and the same effort to get to the PO. Why the price hike?

I already have a Monitor Audio 'Stylift'

I use a magnetic arm lifter. It's a bit scary the way it yanks the stylus up and out of the groove, especially with my Decca! But it does the job.
The concerns with all these end of side lifters are: 1) How much force does it take to activate. 2) How fast does it lift (some of them throw the arm against the lid, or further with no lid!). 3) How reliable is it. 4) How precise is the end of side setting. 5) Where, and how, do you mount it (I had to make a little outrigger for my Oracle). And 6) Will it pull straight up or sideways.
I used to have the little silicone damped Audio Technica lift, but when I sent it back for a replacement (it was leaking) they refunded me instead! If I'd known they were going to do that, I would have fixed it myself!

Quite agree. I would expect a bit more damping than that. Once the arm gets to then of the runout groove, there is no great hurry to lift it!!

Violent?
What difference does the upward movement make?

It does not work with a Techie, I believe:

34mm clearance required - will not fit the SL1200 but will fit 95% of all other turntables
sold a far few of these , nice gadget you can modify to fit low profile plinths arms

The Q UP is a high precision device that safely lifts your tonearm at the end of the record. The Q UP can be installed in minutes, without tools, and is designed to fit on most manual turntables. Based upon a trigger and lift design, now reborn and modernized to work with either classic or contemporary turntable / tonearm combinations The Q UP can be configured for a variety of tonearm heights, thicknesses and shapes. The Q UP only interacts with the tonearm at the end of record and does NOT adversely effect the tonal quality of your system in any way. No need to worry about falling asleep with your record playing or forgetting it is playing if you get distracted.

• Lifts tonearm, when it moves to the end of a record
• Extends stylus life
• Suits nearly all tonearms and manual turntables
• Includes three stackable platforms for turntables with thick platters
• Adjustable trigger sensitivity
• No AC or battery power needed
• Easy to mount, no additional tools necessary!

Actually that doesn't look bad at all. I've seen some that would bounce the arm up several inches.

The Q UP is NOT compatible with SL1200 DJ style turntables

The following list of turntables is a rough guide. The Q UP should fit at least one OR all of their models. If you are not sure then please refer to the template for verification.

Thorens Linn Sondek Rega Oracle Clear Audio J.A. Michell Transrotor A R
EAT Sota Music Hall Kuzma Kenwood Systemdeck Luxman Empire
VPI Avid Artemis Goldmund Transporter SME EAR Denon
Pro-Ject McIntosh U-Turn Origin Live Wilson Benesch JVC Pioneer Roksan

"DJ-style turntables"? Wash yer mouth out! :eyebrows:

All I meant, Scott, was that for me (as an SL-1210 owner), there would be no point now in buying one.

I used to have one of the Audio Technica ones and really liked it. I can't remember why I got rid of it but I'd love another. Sadly their prices seem to be steadily increasing these days!

Probably the fact that people are getting more & more bone idle.. getting off their harris as the end of the record coming up is to much trouble

This works for the Techie, and seems quite gentle:

Might not a product for sale though.

Had a brief chat with him, it's a fairly complex device... it uses a microcontroller, sensor and a servo to work the inbuilt lift of the arm. He designed it specifically for the SL1200 MkII and the current design will only work with this turntable.

However... he enjoys tinkering and is going to look at parts and costing for a lift that will work with more turntables, and may put it on Kickstarter as a project. I'll pass on updates as I get them.

Great, will be cool to see how this develops. Is he willing to sell his solution for the SL1200?

I used to have one, from the eighties. It was branded Thorens QueUp then and worked really well. It was never violent, easy to setup and maintenance free. The release mechanism was reliably triggered each time and the arm was lifted up gently.

Perhaps the the new kid does not have the same performance as the old stock?

There's no reason why not.
That said, £180.00 is a good reason why it's not going to appear on my SL-1210 anytime soon. I'll stick to the old fashioned method of getting up off my fat arse and lifting the arm myself :)

That is because my Technics armboard looks like this, so I guess there is no place to put the lifter:

http://www.hifisentralen.no/forumet/attachments/vinylavdelingen/140810d1339411212-technics-sl-1210-2010-copy.jpg

Maybe by changing the original armboard to something like the one from Mike New it could work?
