What speakers would suit my room?

I will be putting a hi fi into our living room but the room isn't ideal. :rolleyes:

The room is rather long and thin with TV and everything at one end, seating the other and along the left wall.

The biggest issue is room size and use. I can't have a lot of space behind the speakers and they won't be much more than 6ft apart. The listening position will be 12ft away though.

What speakers work best in a relatively confined space?

Budget isn't huge, probably a couple of hundred pounds second hand. I prefer a warm detailed sound.

Once I know what speakers I have I will be able to match an amp that could drive them. Otherwise the system will be a Sony Blu Ray (BDP-S370) and a Marantz CD63 KI Special Edition for cds. I will have a turntable eventually.

Could do worse than a set of q acoustics..2020, s on stands or the floor standers .2050? ...great little speaker and have rear port bungs if needed. I used to use them close to wall and about that width..

The problem should be solvable. You may need to look at speakers that have sealed enclosures as they are less fussy about placement close to a back wall. Try and check out Cambridge Audio Aeromax. They are front ported. They have a totally different driver design that may do a better soundstage in your particular room. I have heard them - the floorstanding version - and they are pretty darn decent.

On a budget, Mission 760i or 780SE should owrk well. Better than the more modern Q acoustics stuff imho and cheap as chips. Well designed, decent sounding speakers. Tannoy Mercury series also worth a look.

Good suggestion. A pair of smallish transmission line speakers may be just the job.

I'd also look out for a pair of second hand Totem Arro speakers if the budget allows.

I have just bought the IPL S2TLK CD3 kits Alan. Starting the cabinet build on Saturday. Hope they sound as good as everyone says.

I bought a pair of Q Acoustics 2020i about a week ago (new for £135 from sevenoaks)
Before that I had Mission bookshelvers and before that B&W DM10 on stands - both of these sets were of a similar (low) price range to the QA speakers but offer no competition soundwise. The 2020i knock them firmly into the long grass. I am utterly gobsmacked that such cheap speakers produce such a rich, detailed and full sound and project that so well.

another speaker that works well in small rooms yet has an amazing bass for its size is the Dali Zensor 1.
Although cheap these are surprisingly good.
