I spend a 1/7th what I used to on shaving by only shaving once a week! And the ladies like the rugged look, so it's definitely the way to go ;)

I use those cheap plastic disposable ones. But the supermarket own brand are rubbish. Bic arent too bad. One lasts me a week.

I am surprised you have a face left!
5 blade Wilkinson Sword last me 2.5 to 3 weeks. Gillette used to last a week max. Disposables are terrible.
Shaving oil + foam is a great combination
You're all barmy - grow a beard and you'll have more money to spend on hi-fi (or vinyl, if you're really 'with it') !

I wondered how long it would be until someone brought up shaving. Its something I have to do once or twice a day depending if I am going out in the evening. I dry shave mostly, none of that namby pamby new man crap ;):lol::lol:

Having a beard does not preclude having to shave though, around the beard in the mouth area etc. One still (I have) to shave .

Not really shave though. I have a little rechargeable grooming kit (it says on the box) with which I trim the beard and trim the 'tash' just above the top lip as required no more than once every 10 days or so - don't call that shaving !

I'm not discussing my shaving habits with you lot, you'll be asking if I have a Brazillian next! :lol: (I don't, I have a Union Jack merkin...:eyebrows:)
I have a bit of face fuzz, trimmed to a #1 with a "grooming kit" like DaveC has, but mine's not made by Technics, then I "fire up the Quattro" - Wilkinson Sword 4 blader, Titanium, natch! ;) One lasts about a week.
Shaving?... What is this 'shaving' of which you speak? :scratch:

I have adopted a similar approach, but the result is more Rab C Nesbitt than George Clooney.
have a look on youtube for the "Waldorf barbershop." i seem to remember a shaving vid or two. The "Fedora Lounge" site may have links and recommendations for precision shaving accessories. Sadly, I'm now follically challenged up top now and look even more ridiculous in a hat, so this site has little to offer me... No point in spending £12+ on a haircut/puff-n-fluff when a #1 all over suffices today ;)
I wore a beard for six years and was accused of hiding behind it (not untrue at the time). Electric shaving's fine for me these days
IME, it's all in the shaving foam/cream/oil that you use before you get to the complicated matter of blades. Don't touch Gillette cream/foam with a barge pole, it actually shortens the life of your blades (probably on purpose). I had the latest Gillette with the matching gel for Christmas and it all lasted no time at all, plus the gel wasn't up to much anyway.
I then discovered http://www.gentlemans-shop.com/ which is quite close to me in Hungerford. I bought a badger hair shaving brush and some "Taylor's of old Bond Street" shaving cream. I stuck with the Gillette blades I have left - which amazingly have now lasted AGES, and a pot of cream for £7 has lasted me the best part of 9 months. It's also given me the closest shave I've ever had and improved the condition of my skin no end.
I'm more than happy with this combination, now that the blades are lasting a reasonable amount of time. I may try downcosting them when this current batch runs out.

You are correct. A traditional lather will better modern foams and gels. It is not clear that shaving with a gel is "wet shaving" at all. The lubricant actually holds the water away from the hair. Maybe that's why the blade does not last as long - a wet (hydrated) hair is softer than when dry. A trad lather attempts to hold as much water on the face as possible, softening the hairs. That the suds are a lubricant is almost a secondary issue.
If nothing else chuck the cans and gells away and buy a brush. Palmolive shaving cream in the green tube is nearly as good as the expensive stuff and can be found in supermarkets for a pound. For some reson Boots charge more!
Shower before you shave if you can and rub some ordinary hair conditioner into your beard as a prep before applying the lather with a brush.
A multiblade cartridge razor will then give of it's best. A safety razor with good technique will better it. But instant sucess is expected these days . . .
Multiblades tend to cause ingrowing hairs because they tug the hair out a little before chopping. Anyone so suffering should certainly try a single blade. The expert forums say black men and other with very curly hair suffer particularly from the problem and benefit most from a single blade.

I remembered the complete shock I had when I saw the price of an 8 pack of Gillette 'Fusion' blades. I mean seriously? Are so many people total suckers for the latest marketing?

Really. I went from dreading my dry shave with a razor to a wet shave convert overnight and haven't looked back since. (I can't, the scarring's too painful - joke)

I dry shave...no problems, no rashes etc....your all a bunch of............;) Only joking as I have a beard which is either full or goatee depending on my mood (I can grow a very good beard in about a week and a half).

Yep me too.Normally about 10 days.I do shave my cheeks by just wetting the blade under the tap.As long as I do it every morning it's fine.

Many years ago I used to handle the Product Liability claims for a well known razor manufacturer (not Gillette) - some of the injuries people suffered because of faulty blades... nasty! WHATEVER you do, if you use disposables, always visually check them before you use them...
Most of the claims were for women shaving their legs :chainsaw:
put it this way, I couldn't face a doner kebab for many years...:bog:
I won't post pics of my right leg when I had severe Celulitis then - you'll never set foot (apologies) in a butchers shop again ;) - I was in hospital for a week with it, tubed up with three drips and blood problems until it subsided. I grew to tolerate regular injections too.
I suggested to Labarum elsewhere that none of you have EVER had a shave until you've found an experienced barber who can give you a genuine wet shave and with hot towels. They do exist outside of London and Birmingham, but you'll have to look around - and none of your poncy poxy "unisex" salons with girly "barbers" with exploding chests and legs up to their arm-pits covering up their lack of skill and training!

As an ex-military gent (?), I suspect you've experienced all sorts of barbering, hopefully good as well as bad. the best give an experience not to be missed, from trim to shave and even a head-massage...
Some years ago I was on a UN Peacekeeping Mission in Angola. We struck up a very worthwhile relationship with the local Convent.
A couple of days before we left a young soldier came to me with about US$150.He had been cutting fellow soldiers hair for the four months we had been deployed, ans this was the take.
He asked me to give the cash to the nuns: it would be used to support the very poorest folk in a war torn country.
A nice story that restores your faith in human nature.
