I've been informed that someone with an IP address in China has unsuccessfully attempted to log onto my account. Has this happened to anyone else?

This seems to me to be a VBulletin issue (forum software) as am seeing it knocking about on similar forums (attempted account access).
For example, easy to scrape domains & look for VBulletin identifiers, such as on this forum:

Me too but Ip address wasn't in China.
Change your pass word to a complex one including numbers and symbols and might be worthwhile also removing any sensitive info by deleting old pms.

Had an attempted login on my DIY Audio forum account, again from China.
If you get similar go to this website and key in the IP Address given from the attempted login.
Tell you all you need to know.

Me too. It will amost certainly be a Dictionary Attack. I think it important that your password contain some digits and / or ~!@#$%^&*()`{[}]|
Just got an email from the forum telling me someone has made 5 unsuccessful attempts to log into my account.... Anyone else experienced something similar?
IP address given is 111.10.147.27
Yep there has been a few attempts over the last few months mostly from China. I suggest changing your password and clearing any old pm's that may have info in them.

I've blocked that IP now. It's a Chinese IP address. Generally these are just attempts by spammers to gain access to accounts with poor passwords. Make sure your password is reasonably strong and you'll be fine.

Don’t worry, it’s just some no-life tossers, somewhere in China and Russia, with nothing else better to do with their empty and pathetic lives, trying to cause mischief. Like Nick says, just ensure that your password is secure, and we’ll continue to ban the IPs.
Trust me, they'll get bored way sooner than we will of banning their IPs, and go back to doing whatever it is that losers, sad cases, and pathetic underachievers, with no life do! ;)

I've blocked that IP now. It's a Chinese IP address. Generally these are just attempts by spammers to gain access to accounts with poor passwords.
Internet access from China to the rest of the world is heavily regulated and monitored. To gain access through the great Chinese Firewall in order to spam and hack accounts would have to be state approved. So if AoS is being hacked it would have to be by a hostile government sponsored hacker.
So what kind of state secrets would AoS be in possession of that would attract such kind of foreign interests? Is it the lack of exposure of well known Chinese audio brands?
Although there are ways of evading the Authorities over there, the GFC is pretty effective and very fluid. I'd agree with Stanley....they are not happy with all the Chinese valve bashing here....:eyebrows:

OK, that's quite definitive.
Guys, there must’ve been at least three separate threads started about this already, which we’ve commented on.
Please not only post threads in the the right section of the forum, but read the forum first to see whether a subject is likely to have been brought up already, before posting about it again - and again! ;)
Could one of the mods please merge this thread into the existing main one about hacking, as I’m busy just now. Cheers! :)

There have been a few of these of late. Admin will ban their ip addresses. make sure your passwords are strong and changed regularly. the stronger the password the less chance there is of a successful hack. try to include CAP, lower case, numbers and signs and not the name of your dog :eyebrows:
I will move this to the thread dedicated to these attempts that mostly seem to originate from Chinese IP addresses.

It might be a good idea to hide the member list so it only shows to logged in members because at the moment it can be viewed without being logged in which makes it easy for a bot to go through the list.

please make certain you all have robust security .....that includes the forum. Though if the attack was repulsed it suggest the current system works !

I too got an e-mail yesterday saying that someone had been trying to log on using my account.

I've had the same. It seems like an automated bot attack originating from China. Can only echo the advice of others above.
Someone had a go at mine too.

Had this a few weeks ago - the IP lookup showed a Chinese IP address BUT it may just as well be from a Proxy service - the Tor Browser for instance hides the original IP address and assigns an anonymous one - often Chinese. Other anonymous browser services do the same - either way the advice on strong passwords is the way to go.

A few days ago I too got an e-mail saying that someone had been trying to log on using my account. I believe the IP Address was from Thailand somewhere...
I've updated my password just in case... ;)

As a precaution, I've update my password to something that requires an A3 sheet paper for me to jot it down . . . .

Yep - me! IP address for my attempt resolves to somewhere near Nanchang China... Though it is registered to a mobile company, so could be anywhere in China I guess.
I'm not exactly an active member on here - not sure what they hope to gain by hacking someone's AoS account. Wish people would just give it a rest and leave me alone!
Could be CIA/GCHQ with some cunning intelligence plan...
Probably not worth worrying about. They're unlikely to guess a strong password, and I've made sure my profile has no valuable info in (like real DoB!) If they did.

+1 I just changed mine after being notified of attempts to hack my AOS account. Apparently using symbols ie £$%&* etc makes your password much stronger / harder to hack. Use them but not to the point where you cant remember what you've done :doh: :lol:

I have just been notified of a hack attempt on my account too.
The hacker's IP address is 223.86.210.226
Same happened to me today. A quick search in whois ip give me that:
85.159.113.228
address: 2404CD Alphen aan den Rijn
address: Netherlands
phone: +31172233916
fax-no: +31172234925
Seems a very stupid hacker.

Again, just to remind anyone not familiar with the hacking attempts; Please make sure your password is difficult to hack....ie dont use your dogs name etc or pass.... a good strong password with caps, low case and numerals etc is best and very difficult to beat. PS remember to write it down correctly as well...;) cheers

They're after your ID, probably hoping you use similar passwords for financial stuff. PayPal & bank, etc.

I have known this happen on a Book Forum that I am on.
The only 100% safe way is to close your current account and open a new one.
Of course tell the site administration first.

As mentioned before it wont hurt at all to change your password. Combine digits like £$%& and so on with caps lock and number(s) in your password which apparently makes it harder to hack. For example, Mou&£1 is gonna be better than mouse1 - just dont forget the password you've created :)

they hope you use the same password(many do)for more sensitive stuff like bank paypal etc so they can nick your hard earned. never use same passwords for site and personal stuff..that way if they crack one they dont get anything else. Also worth stating that to regularly delete pms that have any details of your or other members...another excellent source of revenue for them.

Possibly based in Romania and there have been nearly 3000 searches for the location of IP 109.163.234.9 !

looks like they are at it again.
I got the message this morning, but they didn't succeed.
The ip address they used is a TOR exit router, so the bastards could be anywhere.

Earlier, I received an e-mail from AOS to advise me that someone has attempted to hack into my account, 5 times.
I hope the message from AOS was genuine but I didn't reply to it anyway. What good would it do anyone by hacking into a forum account ?

Hi Folks
I have just been notified by the auto reporting feature of this forum that someone has made
multiple attempts to gain interactive entry to this forum via my account.
The IP address was given, and I have traced this to a geophysical address in Southend UK
I cannot think what purpose this would serve except to post comments under my name.
Does anyone have an idea???

A quick search suggests address located in Paris.

No.
Just make sure that your password is as strong as possible, and in that sense it may be advisable to enter a new one.

Thats a romaniam spammer ip. needs ti be blocked i think. it has a number of hits on the www.
again i will repeat...make sure your password is strong using both caps and low case and numbers etc. it is always the 1st line defense ...dont put down your wifes name or that of a pet etc. also any details of any member you have contacted via pm should be deleted after you have used it.

Two separate attempts were made last night to enter my AOS account both from the same IP address.
They made ten attempts in total.
