Ok. Mid life dictates exploration of seventies hi fi aiming to run modern and vintage set ups for best of both worlds or just more cake. Currently on a ditton 44 journey also have b w dm2 and dm5 running from Yammy cr800. Sounding great, but on a journey. Lots of lPs and CDs but only using computer now with uncompressed files - best of both worlds, maybe. Listen to everything that is good, currently Scandinavian jazz

You have some good vintage gear. The CR-800 is nice. You didn't tell us what source you use, CD, vinyl, etc.

Hey Nice welcomes, makes a change from the trolls. I uploaded a photo just to try that. Explanation required for speaker mess of - I needed bigger woofers than the b w's could to make more of the cr800 ns upgraded bass. I Can't justify the ideal Tannoys so I'm trying ditton 44's. A mad idea even for me was to get a pair for reference and one to play with. I've spent a lot of time reading hf2000 replacement threads, phD in 'crossover nightmare' but winning I think

I have to be honest Ian, I'm not a great fan of the Ditton 44 having had a couple of pairs (leaden bass & uninspired mid). Personally I prefer the DM2s. If Tannoys are too dear, there are loads of other good speakers that would match the CR-800 nicely. For instance, I reckon a late pair of seventies KEF Concertos would work a treat (they'd need short stands to be at their best). Fortunately the 'vintage crowd' have yet to really latch onto these, so prices are still sensible for now (it won't last). They are a true 'Classic' in my view.

Yes there is a high level of admiration for Concertos added to my radar! as are various 103 and 104's, though the idea is to stick with something that does the job, theres always greener grass . For me or for my amp the DM2's provide almost to much treble, admirable but the ditto's to my ears offer a little bit more all round, but I do continue to A/B so its close (in enjoyment not on sound), very ugly though, ugliest, heaviest monster speakers, still £50.

The Concertos are more sensitive and easier to drive than the 103, 104, Cadenza, Calinda, etc.

a bit late as i missed your opening post but welcome to AoS Ian. yes KEF speaks can be good. i have a nice pair:eyebrows: and the bass is pretty good. some still go at silly cheap prices for a lot of speaker
