Just a thought..the amp is in fantastic condition, as close to mint as you'd hope for, obviously well looked after
But it is over 20 years old...

Should I ever think about recapping it?
Wanted a Densen amp since I first heard one 20 years ago, so its probably a keeper.
Will listen and enjoy it, but thinking to send Densen an email asking what they think.

Any thoughts?
Cheers.

usually from 20 years onward caps come into question(mainly electrolytics).these can still be fine and if the equipment in question was built to a very high spec may still out perform or at least be as good as replacements. If it sounds great id leave it for a while..When your in ra mood you can get them checked for values and if any have dramatically slipped then replaced.. 20 years if not been overly used is not long.

Thanks.
Whats more annoying is that these amps are rare as hens teeth and are supposedly something special.
Seller has 3000 odd 100% positive feedback, so sent an email via Ebay letting him know.
Sure he'll come through.
What's odd though is that the box was not damaged in any way, and there was no loose bits rattling about before I opened it.
Was perfectly secure.

Also, on opening the box the dislodged knob was sat at the back of the amp, nestling quite happy in amongst packaging. there was no major scratches or gouges on the top plate where the thing might have rolled over the top panel when it was chucked off a cliff!
Seriously, the 4mm metal shaft the knob connects to has been sheared right off, a clean break.
Yet the knob has no gouges or major knock damage to it?

Amp had original packaging, so nestled securely inside the outer box, no room top bottom left or right for a 40mm dia hunk of metal to have worked its way to the back of the case in the box.

*colour me confused*

Will wait to see what the Seller comes back with, sure he'll do the right thing.
Problem is, he gets it back and its written off, unusable.

Thinking an option might be to get the amp sent back to Densen who I know will repair it for a small cost. Is it a fair option you think to suggest this to the Seller, at his cost of course?

thanks.

*EDIT*
I've emailed Densen asking for cost of repair.

Hopefully we can conduct this constructively.

It should have arrived intact, but if there's no other damage, it may just be easier to change the switch/pot (whichever it is), rather than getting involved in returns.

Kinda sounds like it was like that when he packed it then. A blow that sheared a piece of metal should show on the box tbh. I am thinking he is pulling a fast one' maybe not on you but on the insurance company.

I kinda agree with that Grant... if the box was pretty much intact I can't see how a broken knob, attached to a sturdy shaft, could have broken clean off...

Hi Gary,

If you paid on a credit card you should have insurance on the transaction if you have any problems, may be worth checking with the card company.

It looks like a very simple repair job tbh, small pilot hole drilled into both parts of the shaft, metal pin and some industrial contact adhesive and job done.

Hope you get it sorted.

That's a bugger.

I guess the box has been dropped flat from a height onto concrete, probably while unloading along the way. If it had fallen of a sorting conveyor a corner would probably be damaged.

The shafts are usually some sort of cast metal like 'monkey metal'. Look closely at the snapped shaft and you will see a sort of grain and a shear load snaps these easily.
I once tried to straighten out a slightly bent volume shaft with pliers after shipping damage and the shaft snapped really easily just by trying to straighten it by 1 or 2mm. Luckily that was easy to DIY replace.

The knob is in a recess and protrudes from the case a lot and there looks to be marks around the knob and on the case?
Not seen how it was packed but if the knob was touching original foam packaging with a knob recess etc and then the box was dropped from a height and landed flat the weight of the amplifier would compress the packaging but the if the knob was touching something it would take the shear force and snap.

Hope you get it fixed but if not then paypal will always refund if the seller wont help.

Nah. It's the opposite of brutalism! You can't have polished and gold-plated anything and call it brutalist.

The Brut in brutalism comes from the French for "raw" as in raw concrete and was coined by the French architect Corbusier i.e. not from the english word "brutal", as in big and chunky looking.

I'd agree with that too. Those look heavy knobs and the metal used in many pot shafts are crystaline and brittle - wouldn't take too much momentum and then an immediate stop to break it. Looks like there may be a mark at the bottom of where the know sits as if it hit that? Could be a trick of the light.

The seller though has a duty to only make sure you're not out of pocket and that is likely going to be a re-fund. If it were me, I'd give the refund and then get it fixed myself and re-sell it stating what happened. The loss from re-selling it as repaired/seller refurbished is surely a lot less than Denson would charge just to put a new pot in (that's a 15 minute job for any competent solderer and dismantler, other than finding the exact right part). I think it would be unfair to force the sellers hand to fork out for some premium repair service when it likely wasn't their fault anyway.

Amp sounds great Grant.
Thinking a full service and recap by Densen would catch any potential issues.

the cost of repair is only £35 by Densen and about the same to ship it to Denmark.
Reasonable you think to ask seller to cover both?

I've mentioned that I'd prefer to keep amp than return for refund as we would both be back to scratch, so why not work to get a solution.
Also mentioned the full service Densen can do, so easy to do repair work when its in the factory.

Will away his reply, still wondering why he suggested I contact Interparcel and go through their claims procedure...seems a bit out of character for a 3k+ positive feedback Ebayer.

Na.
Also said to ship the amp back to him and he would repair the knob himself and relist it on Ebay.
I had already mentioned I wanted to keep the amp...

Sending this, look ok?

Hi ******,

On realising the amp was damaged I took a photo of inside of box before I took the amp out.
The knob was on the opposite side of the amp, at the back where the sockets are.

DESIRED OUTCOME
I would prefer to keep the amp and have it repaired by the manufacturer.

I would however be looking for a partial refund to cover the cost of repair? (not expensive!)
**I have contacted Densen and have cost:**

Shipping: £17.95+Vat (http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/gazjamster/Denmark.jpg)
Repair: £35

So total cost to get amp repaired by Densen is approx £58

So a 13% partial refund to cover repair costs, which is fair.
***********************************************

So if you Paypal me £58 I can organise the manufacturer to repair the amp for me.
When its in the factory I intend to get it a full service and recapping., which will bring it up to essentially new condition.

Best Regards
Gary.

Think the guy will be guarding his feedback, dont want to go down that road but will if need be.
Want to keep the amp, its mega cheap to get it fixed and a full service and recap is good value for money.
the amp was £1800 in early 90's money, and I'll get back the amp essentially as new.

Will push the guy to give partial refund to cover repair - which is fair, but not to wait many weeks on him sporting it out with Interparcel - which is not. Why should I be inconvenienced?

Also,
he gets £300 (his insured value) back from interparcel and he keeps the funds I paid for the amp? A double whammy?
Depending if the guy does the right thing, I'll be contacting Interparcel about this.

It's only been a single day since this happened! And you've had a to and fro conversation about it which is better than many people's experience..

I fear you may be pushing this towards a full refund and return out of impatience which is what will happen if you open a dispute (where ebay will require it to be shipped first (probably at your expense) before giving the refund.

Still, the £58 is pretty cheep to sort out the problem on his side as well as yours and both be happy.. so don't understand his need to have you wait for the insurance return. I doubt the insurance would be paid on the full price of the item if it can be repaired for £58 including shipping to the repairer somehow. If anyone pushes for that then they'd need to see it was completely destroyed.. Being dropped is another thing entirely

True but shows how you often loose against the courier and how unreasonable they can be - it's original packaging isn't it, so surely custom-made packaging made to spec by the manufacturer to withstand original shipping. I've had top-mounted tweeters break in original packing due to violent shock like being dropped. I just glued them back though as it was an easy fix, not as easy here.

The seller here though is a private seller so doesn't count anyway - it's a private civil matter. Unless they really are a business outside of ebay..

Happily, sense prevailed.

Seller agreed to refund repair and shipping costs to my Paypal.
But again, he was stressing how the standard Densen internal packaging still allowed the amp knob to be damaged, and did I agree?

He went quiet when I mentioned if he was claiming from Interparcel for damage AND
Got the impression he was trying to get collaboration "in writing" for Interparcel. Didn't say nowt obviously.

Is it not dodgy to claim interparcel for damages AND keep my money for the amp...as the amp has been "successfully delivered to buyers satisfaction"?
Effectively getting paid twice..cant be right surely?

Happy to send a picture of an undamaged internal box, hey...its the truth.
Its my belief that shipping was not a factor.

Good comment Sam, but not pushing for refund.
I've let him know I want to keep the amp and hes agreed to meet shipping and repair cost.
Asking me to wait was not a good idea on his part..so I shot that one down pretty quickly.

Said to the guy I'll send him photos of the box once money is in my Paypal account.
Dubious though as to the legality (or morality even) of taking a buyers money then claiming for damages...when the Item has after discussion and agreement of terms) has been delivered to the buyers satisfaction.

Any thoughts on this?

In the event of interparcel paying a claim to him I believe it becomes their property and he'd have to produce it wouldn't he?

To be fair, the guy may be just trying to get he repair cost back from Courier, and that's fair enough I guess.

He told me I was "holding him to ransom" and was a bit miffed when I said I'd send photos when funds hit PayPal.
Ok for me though to sit with a broken amp for weeks that I'd just bought...
Anyway...All's well that ends well.

Amp sounds really really good, pleased with it.
Just one input though till I get it fixed.
Sending it away early next week, get it back repaired, serviced and recapped.

Pre-amp....done.

Yep,you were holding him; not to ransom but to do the decent thing which he was trying to avoid.

I know Grant, your right.
Not right when folk try to take advantage, to myself or others.

Take most folk at face value but a couple of things didn't add up with how it played out.
all sorted now, guy emailed me and said he was glad we ended on a good note.

Thinking of his feedback I guess :D

Sending the pre back to Densen for a full service, repair of knob and full recapping.
Be interesting to hear how it sounds when I get it back.

Been listening to vinyl this afternoon and with the far more open window of the better preamp I cant believe how much I'm enjoying my vinyl.
Listening to Ry Cooder's "Paris Texas" soundtrack and I've never heard anything so "in the room"... uhm, in my room before.

So,
refreshed preamp in place soon, and new 300B power amp on the way.
Happy days. :)

Think I'll do a Struth and start a "Think I'm finished" thread..

The hell you did.... :)

Just saw it Grant, sorry fella!

Hooking Capella up to Mini-1 did I give noticeable extra gain, but the improvements for me was more with the added oomph and drive it gave to the sound. Think the amp struggled a wee bit when the wick was turned up a bit.

Big jump up from the Capella with new pre, night and day I'd say.
The Mini-1 has enough fire in the tank to work well with more open pre's.

Be interesting Grant to see how it powers your Duncan valve jobbie?

I've not done the power mod to the amptastic but guess I could try it in the back and just turn the volume on full which is pretty much the same thing.control it then from the copper. Might give it a go tomorrow. The mini1 is sounding really good with the IMF's by the way;)
