Vintage Analogue Synthesizers was one of my original passions back in the early 80's. I do have a short list of Synths i used to own & would dearly like back, below examples of why i loved em so much..Ofc prices are well mad these days..

0ne time whilst mucking around on them in his room, we heard an almighty crash, some guy his dad got in to fix the plastic corrugated scullery roof fell through the roof , my mate had just cranked the amp up and made a huge swoop noise, kind of startled the guy who lost his balance. ' Wind of change' sounded great played on an oscar.

Roland 'System 700' came out around 1976 you could still buy one in the early 80's but way too expensive for my pocket. However i did own an original 'System 100'..these were from the mid '70's {not to be confused with the '100M'} I remember paying a bloke £600 for it..

The Sequential Circuits 'Pro One' was a good mono synth. I used to have one of their 'Six Tracks' with matching 'Drumtracks'..

I had a Mini Korg for a while t was terrible. My son still has my vintage microKorg that was equally as bad. I loved my ARP Oddysey and my Logan string synth. I never got the same fun from my Korg Triton. Great to see someone post on such a great topic

The Korg '700' was far from Rubbish, Might be a tad limited but was a very favourable among some well know musicians Vangels & The Human League to name a couple.

The ARP 'Odyssey' was great but must be the last version for me the '2823' {Black/Orange with Proportional Pitch Controller Pads}

Probably my fav all time Korg was the '3000' series semi modular Poly jobbies. 'PS-3300' was a beauty, Keith Emerson had one of these

Yep i used Roland 'RE-201: Space Echo' Awesome & transformed the sound of my synths..People that judge the sound of an old synth just naked will never be happy.. One of my all time regrets getting rid of it.

As with anything may it be Vintage Instruments, Vintage Studio Equipment, Vintage Audio Equipment you have to ask yourself why people want these items badly regardless of how much they fetch. Quite easy answer really

Meh.... not such an easy answer in my opinion. If it's about sound then their ears need testing as so many analogue modelling synths and soft synths sound every bit as real as the real thing. Some of course will say that's rubbish but I bet they haven't compared two together and in a mix and with effects like reverb, and they'll be imagining it anyhow.

It's all about the knobs and the mystique and the image of the things - it's the tactility and direct control that can't be reproduced unless a manufacturer goes out of their way to re-make one. Korg made a limited edition full-size MS20 and reviewers said it sounded the same when compared directly except there were a few things on the new one which also meant it could produce a wider range of sounds too. Basically the high prices come down to nerdy gear-lust pure and simple. That and because they've grown up and got boring jobs and don't know what to do with their money now.

Anyway, in my opinion it's all about the filters and what goes before those filters can be re-produced by almost anything modern digital. So just need a good analogue external filter box with lots of knobs.

I even remember reading Herbie Hancock was using a Rhodes emulator on tour on a G4 mac about 10 odd years ago - he also said it sounded as real to him on stage in a concert scenario as any real Rhodes he's played.

Normally when I love an analogue synth sound (often pads) I discover it was an 80s Fairlight (i.e. early digital sampler).

Back in the eighties I owned a Cheetah MS6 which was a fab synth that used the same chipset as an Oberheim so had a similar sound but way back in '74 I constructed a Dewtron synth which was just bloody marvellous for making otherworld synth sounds. I kind of fancied myself as a Brian Eno type back then and used the synth for making his classic synth doodlings on the For Your Pleasure album. Great days and I miss them.

ofc it's Rubbish that is no different scenario than making a CD player sound & feel like a Record player. However much you kid yourself they are not the same in both sound & playability.

There is no comparison between a shite soft synth and the real thing. Even analogue modelling synths are hands on which soft synths will never be. Jesus, you'll be telling me next that digital imaging is better than real photography...!

I have never played a synth but everynight johan tronestam, gert emmens, ron boots , axess, Vangelis and many other berlin school synthesists get played on the logans and sound awesome

As a money point of view these days used Analogue synths are sky high, Modular systems even more so.. imho the best option is go for the Synthesizer.com modules as you can afford em.

Playability perhaps not but that's down to the designer of an analogue-modelling synth and how many direct controls they want to put on it. Soundwise - you really need to listen to what's out there today and without any pre-empting bias. Not everything is good of course.. You might hear differences if something is trying to be exactly the same as another but you'd be hard-pushed to say what is better sound-wise. In a mix and in a song then it's even less of a problem.

What's annoying to me is that Eno and err.. other great synth users who's names escape me, used state-of-the-art instruments to get a new sound. All people want to do these days is stay in the past. If people want to be a new Eno et al, they should be see what new stuff is out there with its absolutely endless possibilities. People appear to think that if they just had the same gear as their heros then they will be able to sound like them and write great music.

Obviously if you're a fan of analogue synths for the sake of them and enjoy their look, smell, feel, history etc then there is nothing to compare to the real thing. Just that musically it's not worth paying the crazy prices.

I got rid of all my Analog stuff and shifted to Elektron stuff from Sweden . Best thing I did musically . Much easier to operate equalling faster output without the need to calibrate. And they sound amazing
