Just a thought? I'd certainly like to meet, chat hifi with others in the Yorkshire area.

Just looking for interest at the moment. I know that quite few people on AOS are from the Wakefield, Sheffield, Leeds area but I'm not sure about the distribution of other AOS members within the Yorkshire area, hence the expression of "interest" rather than a decleration of intent to set up a new group. :)

Leeds is a 90minute drive for me so more than doable.

Hmmm, what about Young Offenders Bring Ordio (SIC we cant spell in Yorkshire).

Bake off's would be cool. I'm sure something like that would go down a storm. Depends of what people want.

I think that when successful hi-fi clubs have been run in the past the organisers have sort of themed each meet. So, for example, they may arrange for it to take place at a dealers, or have an industry spokesman talk about a new product, or centre it on interconnects, or phonostages etc. I think it would help if people had a focus.

My earlier comment regarding Yorkshire being a big place wasn't intended as flippant either. I would be interested in such a club but it does ultimately depend on where it would take place - if local to me then obviously no issue but the further afield it is the more awkward it would be (I realise this is obvious).

Also, I suppose it would be useful to consider what people would actually want to get out of such a club - i.e. Is it just a socialise with hi-fi being very much secondary or is it primarily about the hobby with a social element attached (not sure I have explained that very well)? If it's about sharing experience then I'm not sure that the forum doesn't ready serve that roll?

Some very good points. I live in wakefield but was thinking of Huddersfield due to the fact it has several dealers in the town centre and probably one of the best vinyl shops around. Huddersfield has good links to Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and Wakefield (and many others). The train station has two very good pubs and the dealers and record shop are is within 300 yards of the train station and I'm sure these guys would be interested in helping out.

YNWaN

I would think the most attractive thing regarding private clubs is to totally omit commercial Audio ie: No dealers or any such mainstream equipment.

I would think the most attractive thing regarding private clubs is to totally omit commercial Audio ie: No dealers or any such mainstream equipment.

It wouldn't always be that way, roping in dealers is just one facet of what could be achieved. I think an organic approach would be needed where suggestions from club members could determine how a club could be run i.e a simple meeting in a pub to discuss hifi with a few beers and a curry one week and then possibly a demo of the latest hifi kit in dealers shop for the next time around. It looks like it won't be happening. I expected more replies and interaction than this :(.

Yes, I understand. Unfortunately the reality is that the number of members who regularly post (on all the forums, not just AoS) is relatively small and some who would potentially be interested may not have seen the thread. It is difficult because there may well be people on pfm or the Wam who would be interested in such a club but either haven't seen the thread or consider it an AoS only thing and not for them.

16-02-2015, 13:04
I don't personally consider myself a member of any particular forum but reading posts it is clear that some people do think of themselves that way - that's down to the individuals though rather than being a forum issue as such.

Without People there is no Forums. in other words a posting board is only a Tool for a poster, many posters make up a forum. It's the click on Forums that are the danger. Say you are a Flat earther  into say Naim/Linn what forum are you going to choose to post? If you a Techy & Tannoy fanboy what forum are you gonna choose? etc instead of concentrating on certain products & beliefs forum posters may become more as one interacting with one another.

Probably the only reason i choose AOS is i can talk freely about vintage gear, i know there is a few members that like the same stuff & most importantly i can be naughty & cross the line :D i doubt i could do any of this sucessfully on another forum. The only downside to AOS for me is a shortage of Sense of Humour & some people are far too serious. A meeting full of people like that would be my worse nightmare.

YNWaN
16-02-2015, 13:27
Well I would say that the sense of 'community' that a forum may illicit is 90% illusion. I have only a passing interest in Tannoy's etc. but I still post on this forum. Regarding sense of humour I would say that the nature of writing posts is not an easy medium in which to convey humour as so much comedy is down to timing and inflection.

I tried this last year down London way

It never got off the ground :(

Had about 6 people interested who all had different ideas

I was hoping for a monthly meeting , others said every 3 months is enough

I was looking at a venus that would require a payment of £20 per hour ( this cost would need to be covered by those attending ) as my home is not big enough for a event like this.

My idea would be for each person in turn to bring his or her system along for us all to enjoy and talk about , the good the bad and the ugly , suggest way of improving / setting up ( if vinyl ) , if vinyl other could bring pre amps to swap etc

Plenty of variation is good :)

Mark:
What im trying to say because some peoples main interest maybe say Naim/Linn they are hardly going to spend time on a forum that chats about Techy/Tannoy are they. I would not because i would have zero interest. The more of a certain fan on a certain forum the more those products will be talked about hence members will stick to the forum of their choice.

People are naturally self centered: Look after No.1! Thay are hardly gonna pay for something that does not at least cover their best interest..No clubs only work if everyone is into the same thing. Do you honestly think someone into British Vintage bikes would give the time of day to Japanese super bike fanboy within a club?

That's all fair comment. You have some fantastic retro hifi. I would love to see your Ferrograph amp and discuss Prog with you. I'd also like to hear some of your other gear. It could all be done with a sense of humour, I'm the least serious person I know. ;)

You may have a passing interest in Tannoy's but your really into your NS1000's :D This is another example of me wanting to hear these speakers. I'm intrigued by your x-0 and active/passive configuration. I may also get you to make me one of your magnetic clamps at some stage ;)

Al' thats really sad. I think this is where a good pub comes into it's own. Some of the pubs in my neck of the woods have free rooms that you can use so long as you spend sufficient behind the bar.

Well I have classic hifi 1/2 mile away from where I live. I have Audiovation, MCRU in Huddersfield. Mark and Simon from Sheffield are extremely knowledgable about building high end phonostages and speaker modification. I've got a fair old but of modified vintage kit. Most manufacturers also welcome tours by audio clubs and having visited a number of the UK's manufacturers in the past (Linn, Naim, Quad, Arcam, Mission, Meridian) I can attest to how interesting such visits are.

I don't think it's realistic (or fair) to expect someone to host a club night at their home. Some pubs are happy enough to host such a night in the body of the pub or in a separate room but where I live (in a city) they all charge for use of private rooms so some extra charge is inevitable.

I don't know if this idea will actually get past the idea stage (as REXTON said earlier, there hasn't exactly been an avalanche of interest) but one of the problems (alluded to earlier) is that people all have different ideas as to what they want from an audio club.

I think Floyddroid lights the way here. He took a punt on organising a small meetup and it's turned out to be popular enough to warrant a larger venue. Even if I only speak for myself I've got to know and like many of the people and that alone would keep me coming back.

I think if you build it Andrew they will come. I wouldn't call NEBO a hifI club as such, even if that's what my Mrs calls it:lol: For me the forum sort of does that and provides knowledge, resources and other like-minded souls. Start it small and see where it goes. There must be plenty church halls and community centres will give you space for a modest donation. Get a few people together in a room chatting and enjoying music and it will take the form it is meant to have.

Made some progress. It looks like a local vinyl shop in wakefield would be interested in supplying some free space to a few vinyl heads at the same time as when they are running a vinyl fair. This would take place at unity hall in Wakefield. This is great news as unity hall is an excellent venue which would give us plenty of space. We have good local train and motor way links and we have lots of excellent bars and places to eat quite near by.

Whilst on the issue of regional difference, doesn't it seems that the most active communities are in the North and Scotland. Wondered why SE folks haven't got something going themselves.

Perhaps some of the stereotypes about the north are true, Maybe we are all just friendlier :)

There’s definitely something in that I think, although I’m not sure it applies to anyone here. In my experience, amongst the general public I’ve met over the years. ‘southerners’ tend to be more distant and aloof. They're definitely a different ‘sort'.

It’s no co-incidence, I feel therefore, that the three friendliest cities I've been to in the UK (where there are the warmest, cheeriest, most down to earth people), without question, are Glasgow, Liverpool and Newcastle :)

Worst of all, by some margin, was London! Go figure…

On a much smaller scale, in that respect, it’s also interesting comparing Chester with Wrexham. One city (and a very large town, which should be city), less than 15 miles apart, but that couldn’t be more different!

I guess it's the same with any big capital city.
It's said the rural French hate the Germans (for obvious historical reasons), the Belgians and Parisians.

Perhaps, Alan, hence why these days I wouldn’t thank you to live in one. In that respect, there’s also a HUGE difference between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

As for France, it’s often said here (mainly amongst the English) that the French are unfriendly and arrogant, which is the complete opposite experience we’ve had in nearly 50 years of visiting France on its own, and whilst en-route (by car) to Italy.

However, we always go ‘off the beaten track’, and stay well away from cities, which is generally where you meet the most genuine people :)

Id say just organise a meet up even if only half a dozen turn up with some kit to put a couple of systems together its good crack and never a true bake off more experimenting
I remember Steve being really worried about the lack of response to his first Nebos but a lot more turned up than expected so all was well.
Steve just has a donations Jar to pay for the room, he's usually to piss*d to sort that out though LOL

Precisely, that's what I enjoy... getting to hear kit and systems I'd never normally come across and being able to chat with the people who build it... Usually through trial and error throughout the course of the day a mega system gets constructed. The sound of Marcos deck playing through Nick's music first phono stage and your amps had me pretty much enthralled at the last meet up.

Also if we'd known earlier on how good Ali's 300B monos would sound with my speakers we might have built some of systems earlier in the day a bit differently. Trial and error is the name of the game.

Funny that Rich I had been to the bar when you set that up and as soon as I walked into the room you could hear immediately is was just right and it made your system just gel together

Like you I like the possibility of being able to hear the combinations of kit that you just cant demo anywhere, Ive heard more Valve amps in the last year than in the last 20 years and I am impressed as how good they are, pre and power

Its a shame that you aren't interested in people visiting and listening to your system hifi Andre. I think your approach to system building has some unique aspects and it would be fascinating to hear what results you get and have the opportunity to discuss your priorities.
I live in Lancashire but I do think that the thing that would draw me to a hifi club is bring able to visit members homes and experience their systems in action. The Wam seem good at this - I've had some friendly invitations based purely on my location.

That's fair play Andre and you are upfront so I knew what your reply would be. I can understand anyone being bored with a hobby interest after thirty years.

I might be getting a little closer to getting this organised. I've recently taken over a new business so all my time has been spent integrating it into my current business. Wakefield has a thriving vinyl community with several decent shops and a few local companies which specialise in doing things like producing brand new bits for Garrard 301's.

I have been planning on doing something with this again but I think I need to scope out a local venue in Wakefield that's either free (like in a pub) or maybe ask for small contributions from members on a meet by meet basis to cover cost of room rental. The quaker meeting place in Wakefield looks interesting I might give them a call. ;)

There used to be a recorded music appreciation society that met in the Quaker meeting house... As I remember it, they used to leave the equipment there between meetings, so you might have a flying start! The room they used was a bit small, but there were a couple of other rooms available...

I was (optimistically) thinking that this might become a little cultural event for Wakefield. If we could set up a regular venue and then publicise it, we might generate some more interest in out dying hobby...
I don't have any axe to grind here, I just think most people never hear what a record player can do...

Time, children, businesses and hifi projects have gotten in the way with this idea. I see that you are also a fellow DECCA owner Mark, I have a Maroon but not tried it yet. To be honest I really need to find a venue and the rest is pretty easy. I've more than enough stuff to do bake-offs. I have lots of vintage stuff as well. Do you have any suggestions for a venue?
