I think the recommended load resistance for that cart is 47k ohms and load capacitance of 400pF. tracking force is about 1 gram. think it outputs about .8mv.... it would be worth checking that these are right though.

M20E is a mm cart not MC. It won't sound great if you use the MC settings on your preamp.

"won't sound great" is being polite. It will sound like you've removed the tweeters from your speakers - fat, muffled.

If it's into the correct input, then check the tracking weight and clean the stylus. If that fails it might be because the cartridge is 30 years old.

I have an elderly M20e stylus (blue stylus in a gold cartridge body)and bland it certainly ain't! In fact, diamond wear considered, it's sweet, airy in the best sense and should be a perfect match for the SME, some of which actually having loading caps in the signal plugs (worth checking yours). I bought an M20FL Super stylus for mine and although it sounds a little 'thumpy' in the Dual 701, it sounds excellent in the much simpler 1214/1216 hybrid I also have, the 701 being partial to vintage ADC's as well as my Ortofon MC30 Super :eek: ;) My M20 body has the CAP210 fitted by the way...

The RD11S must be set up Linn LP12 style wherever possible and, depending on the sample you have, there will be differences underneath. Tonearm cable dressing is vital for good bass performance and SME cables weren't always that pliable..

One final thing - check the main bearing spindle tip for wear. Ariston began chrome plating some of them and this can either wear off or if you're very unlucky, peel off.

No, the RD11S came long after...

Until 1977 or so, there was no set 'procedure' for properly setting up an LP12. It was Julian Vereker who really put it to rights and he 'taught' his dealers how to do it more correctly. One of those dealer staff members was Jimmy Hughes and Jimmy taught me!

The 'RD11S' was a good deck. I had one of them {Not to be confused with the 'RD11Superiour'}
