Hi People
This will be my 3rd year at the show :)
2013 as a punter doing the room too room listening experiance
2014 as a exhibiter
2015 doing a room share with a WW member , 2 system up and running , My analog his digital :)
Will be doing 1 hour alternating demoing one hour then room hopping ;)
We will be in room 207
Who is going from AOS as a exhibiter or a member of the public ?
Feel free to pop in and bring me a beer ( Bitter shandy please ) :D
I can't wait its a superb event some of the best hifi in the UK will be on display and being displayed by real hifi enthusiasts :D
Its held in Melton Mowbray the land of the PIE and yes we eat pies and chutney as well , Jim JVS on WW last year collected I believe 170KGS of PIE's for us to eat :eek: EPIC , same again this year I hope

I'll be exhibiting in Syndicate 2 (1st floor) with Matt / fatmarley.
I'll be bringing electronics (especially my NAD S300 integrated amp) and Matt will be bringing his DIY speakers. He wanted my opinion of them a few months back and brought them round to my place.
DIY speakers? Meh. :rolleyes: But Gadzooks :eek: they were fabulous, and I suggested we share a room at Scallywagford this year. :)
He's doing a bit of a rebuild on them at the moment, which I haven't yet heard ... nervous? Me? .... Yeah! :lol:

The truth is that, for me, Scalford is in real danger of losing its lustre. I really don't need to hear another collection of cobbled together random eBay purchases played in 40 rooms. What interests me is the ten rooms (hopefully) that have something extraordinary - custom built etc.

I know where you're coming from, but that doesn't bother me. I just like seeing what folk have been up to with their systems, and what they've bought since last year, especially from those who show an ability to think outside of the box, and thus assemble surprisingly fine sounding systems, for little outlay. Gromit, for example, usually comes into that category.
Coupled with what you've mentioned above that interests you, I find all of that, as a whole, far more interesting (and relevant to me as an enthusiast) than wandering around rooms at commercial hi-fi shows, largely full of nondescript kit from mainstream audio manufacturers, which fails to teach me anything new.

I'm very much into 70s Miles Davis at the moment though so expect a quick turn round of visitors !

Tough luck Steve. I did mine about thirty years ago. Got a nine inch scar up the back of my right calf now, where they sewed it back together. Six weeks in plaster and took a long time to stop hurting, but was eventually 'right as rain'. Good luck!

I think you'll find that most rooms are filled by the exhibitor's own system, and not something they've 'cobbled together'. Yes, I'll be exhibiting for the fifth (or is it sixth?!) time this year and I'll be bringing along a different system again, but I have a large personal collection of items and I try to bring things along that I think people might like to see and hear. In this year's case, this includes a few rarities that quite a few may never have encountered before. The feedback I've had from previous years has suggested that this has been appreciated but if anyone wants to tell me otherwise I'd be happy to stop and attend just as a punter.
If I may say so, your rather snotty attitude is somewhat counter to the whole ethos of the show, which has always been good natured, fun and turns up a surprising variety of equipment.
You are entitled to your opinion but it is no more valid than mine. I'm well aware of what to expect at Scalford as I have attended every year. If I may say so, your self righteous attitude is also somewhat counter productive from the very ethos you seek to extol - perhaps it is time to dismount from your high horse?
Perhaps you feel my comments were a snipe at you personally? Let me assure you that this is not the case; but in hindsight you have indeed exhibited the kind of systems I was thinking of. If people have enjoyed them then good for them and for you - but you can't expect everyone to be equally as enthusiastic.

Leave it for the people who enjoy the efforts of the staff that put the show on, and for the exhibiters and visitor who enjoy it immensely , Including myself :)
I've attended all shows but one and think it's an absolute joy and probably unique to the Country in terms of Hi Fi shows. Really looking forward to exhibiting, I've left every show with the intention of doing so but then never put myself on the list when the time came. Compared to some, my system will be a doddle to carry from car to room. It's possible, just possible I'll have a pair of Series 7 Monos.
I won't be going as its just located in the wrong part of the country for me, Birmingham would be better :lol::lol::lol:

In fact, for me, it may well be one of the best years.

Well yes, quite. I did have some reason (in my opinion) to have some doubts though as last years show (whilst still fun) was the least interesting that had been held so far. Obviously what interests one is a very personal thing and some probably found quite differently to me, but I can only report from my perspective.
I did notice that a couple of the systems sounded distinctly dealer led (not the big ticket systems) - now both of those systems are ones I'm very much looking forward to hearing, but it's a non-trade show isn't it..... or what is it? An element of this seems to have existed every year - in that it's largely a non-trade, enthusiast hobbyist, only show - but with a little bit of trade. This contrary balance seems to work very well, but it would be a shame, I think, if the balance moved further toward the trade.

So, Im sharing exhibitor duties with with ROB/HOOPSONTOAST.
We are in room 238.
He is providing digital front end, amp and speakers. Im bringing my turntable, phono and SUT,
including a couple of my lovely cartridges : FR 7 series and AN IO.
The former was very well received by a certain Scot last year, but he will have to up his offer quite a bit from last years paltry £35.50.

Well keep us (me) posted as to your progress please. Whilst there are obvious similarities to Colin's activation of the Yamahas there are also significant divergences. The speakers are the same (although mine have received some structural modification) and I also use a digital crossover (and lab.Grupen amplification though different models) - but in my case it is only to drive the bass and the mid and treble are passively driven. The crossovers that Colin uses (according to his website) use fourth order slopes which are very different from the passive second order that Yamaha used. Personally I use second order passive on the tweeter/mid and third order on the bass with some extra shaping. So although the bones of the two systems sound similar I would say the detail is quite different. It will be extremely interesting to hear how Colin's speakers perform actively and to compare them to the passive option.
I shall ensure that the Yorkshire Massif bring some "jazz" to play in your room. :D

It is a bit of an acquired taste. :)
Hopefully people will bring their own music.
That way they get to hear the systems with familiar tracks.
It works for the exhibitors too as we get to hear new music.

really enjoyed as usual . the police came to investigate some compliants over all the cars parked but they soon zoomed off
noticeable increase in the amount of ladies present , even managed to get my good lady there and managed a few seconds in several room but was marking papers in the lounge most of it . great to see more balanced audience
so grateful to all those who lugged huge heavy kit there . some of the speakers are so huge . the variety as ever was superb even if a number of rooms slightly too loud for my ears [getting old!!]
well worth the trip

Well, I enjoyed it.
Great fun running a shared dem room.
Great fun taking an hour or so off and doing a quick scout round.
Great fun - well, actually quite hard work! - running a charity sale for Cancer Research UK. It made £343 - thanks to all who contributed. :thumbsup:
Some of the highlights for me - Devialet's rather wonderful and hyper-tech speakers in Serge's room (now there was a surprise) - a pleasure to chat with him as well and ogle his gorgeous vintage Yamaha reciever, Rick E's Impulse H2 and his kindness in letting me have that gorgeous JVC receiver (watch out for pics in my Gallery thread), meeting Mark YNWAN at last, Jim JVS's megadosh Acapella speakers - much more to my taste this year.
Lots of good sounds, lots of enthusiasm, and a really good vibe to it all.

Well I would much rather listen to Rage Against the Machine than the smooooth jazzzz that is usually played at hi-fi shows (will pass on the Rammstein though) :).
Indeed, and the production on their debut is just stunning.
Didn't think it was as good as last year to be honest!
highlight was JVS wam members system!
He was useing a black & decker workmate as a stand for his Kronus turntable :)
But the sound from his system was mind blowing at times

So many systems and so little time to listen to them all in. Fantastic day though. Sadly there were still things i missed one being the Kronus turntable. The two rooms featuring Yamaha NS1000 speakers certainly stick in the memory. However, the active conversion were the ones i thought sounded best overall.
Passive Yamaha NS1000 speakers had boogie in spades very impressive with Modright amplification and stunning source components............

Active Yamaha NS 1000 speakers having all frequencies driven my separate pro power amps. Ultimately much better control won the day and these babies sounded wonderful.......

Yep, I think I agree with that - probably best sound at the show, and way better than they sounded last year, imo. Jim said that the electronics was totally different from last year, so maybe he has learnt how to get the best out of them over the past year (mind you, the room was different as well!).
Also enjoyed the brief listen to the Devialet speakers Serge was showing, would defo like a longer session with those.

I've said it on the 'Wam but I'm going to say it here as well - HUGE thanks to Audio Al for happening to have brought a spare cartridge with him and for trusting me with it for the day. This got my Pioneer up and running again after the discovery that the diamond on my Kontrapunkt b fell off somewhere between Hampshire and Scalford.:(
Oh well, it wasn't it its first flush of youth and I've been debating a re-tip for a while!

Last year spare ESL63 this year a spare Denon DL304 :), I am please I had it and was able to lend you it for the day so lots of visiters could see you linear tracker working :eyebrows:
