Right, second from my collection of 'used to work well in my last house' speakers are these little Celestions.
Much has been written about the SL6 series on the web; not all of it terribly complimentary it has to be said. I really like these speakers though.
These are the second generation 'S' model that were the first to have the aluminium dome tweeter which replaced the famously 'rolled off' copper dome. They also have the improved woofer which I believe was carried on little changed right until the end of the line with the 100 model.
They retain the fantastic mid range that the copper dome models were famous for but this tweeter didn't have the resonant frequency that required the roll off so they have better treble extension and increased sensitivity over the original SL6.
The physical limitations of a small, sealed box and a relatively low sensitivity (84db/w) mean that they are never going to shake the walls but given a decent amp, the bass they have is tuneful and you don't get any boom / port related issues. They still sound full bodied and you don't feel like you're missing out on anything listening to them.
The tweeter is the best metal dome I've heard and you can listen at a decent volume for hours with no fatigue or headaches without feeling you're missing out on any detail.
Where I feel these speakers really excel is mid range and timbre. Acoustic instruments in particular come across beautifully and you can hear the manner in which they are being played as well as the notes. It's hard to explain and they would never particularly impress in an A-B shop demo but there is something a little bit special about them.
For sale because as I mentioned on my Spendor thread, I'm trying to sell of all of my 'quite nice' speakers to fund something 'really nice' that works in my new house.
They need a decent amp. Lots of power and current needed to keep things under control. That said, my 8000P at 100wpc made a reasonable job of it. I feel that the speakers have more to give though.
Condition is really nice with only a few very minor marks on the speakers. No dents on the tweeters. No cracks in the woofers. I really think that you'd struggle to find a better pair. Supplied with original matching stands. The stands do have some marks but nothing drastic. A couple of the nut covers have been lost in the house move but I'll try to find them.
Sorry the pictures aren't great but trying to take pictures of black speakers with a phone camera under artificial light isn't easy!
The pictures make the grilles look a bit purple but they are nice and black in reality.
I also have the original manual and test printouts somewhere which I will try to find before sale.
I'm asking £200 with the stands which given the condition I think is very fair so I'd like to see if they will go for that before considering offers.
Collection only from Bicester please. Happy to demo with free tea!
