This is probably best amplifier I've ever owned.

The original 25 Watt Class A Electrocompaniet 'Two Channel Audio Power Amplifier'.

It doesn't have a sound it just so natural and neutrals with lots of heat.

I already own one but it developed a short within the transformer it has remains in bit ever since the late eighties. If only I taken it to bits and measured the transformer voltages it would still be in use today. To this day Electrocompaniet will not release a service manual for it.

On Monday lunchtime my wife took delivery of it from Parcel Force, like a kid with a new toy I could not wait to try it out.
After a crappy hour & half's drive home, first thing first was to unpacking it and power it up, no bang pops or clicks all well and good so far.

Plug in my Electrocompaniet 'Two Channel Audio Preamplifier' turn it on the power led comes on and after the time delay relay click out no sound, put my ear to the speakers as you do all I could hear was a faint hiss coming from the tweeters.

I've had the problem before with the preamp it like to take out a protection resistor in the regulator if it not been used for some time.

The only other thing was to try it with my modified Quad 22 this made an interesting combination bass and treble rolled off but the midrange was superb in fact a very natural and neutrals sound.

The roll is not a fault with my Quad 22 it more to do with the 1K input impedance of the power amp!

Later I'll need to have a look at the preamps regulated power supply and get that sorted.

But for now It's like finding a long lost friend.

The Electrocompaniet 'Two Channel Audio Amplifier' is an excellent power amplifier to use use with Quad '57 ESLs.

At one time I used a DIY version directly based on the original Ottala and Loestrom design, as published in the JAES. The Electrocompaniet design ran very hot and because of that, was not known for it reliability. The build quality was not as good as it could have been.

Also the input impedance is unusually low, so it has to be fed from a preamp having an output, or source, impedance of, ideally, no more than 50 Ohm (though I used it successfully with a Quad 44 preamp using the 1.5V, 75 Ohm output). The Quad 22 preamp is not suitable; its output impedance is far too high. Obviously you ought to have no problems when using the Electrocompaniet preamp.
