Open baffle. Help advise

An open baffle design is what I am seeking out, I have read lots n lots but just when you think I will give that a go !!

And when threads run into 100s of pages and avenues explored my mental capicitor starts to melt sure me dad was called cheapy chino

No seriously a good OB starting point is needed ad advice regards drivers.

Looking at 15" + single. Or 2x 15" and single. And even maybe compression horns

I have Read many a good few things regards members of this sight and their OBs but some posts go back a few year.

So developments may have changed and different drivers discovered /trialed

I used to be a bit of a speaker swapper, not because I wanted to but because I could never find a design I was totally happy with. I bought a pair of Lampizator Endorphine P17 speakers on a complete whim as Ali Tait was steering me towards OB's.
Well that was about three years ago and have never looked back.
I upgraded the xovers to great effect with the help of Paul Coupe, Reffic. If it is something you would also want to build I could help by selling you a complete set of drivers and my upgraded xovers, so you would just need to make the cabs.

Not a copy of mine, you'd be looking at £50 each for the Eminence, 200 or so for the B200's and 105 dollars for the MiniDSP. Plus the wood for the baffles.

They're a good bit of kit and easy to use. They do a calibrated measurement mic too, so you could set the speakers up to your room.

Having read a lot on the various forums regards OB design across the pond it appears the units and components are an issue over here in uk

The wood/mds baffle is a very minor issue

Have table saw, router,drills etc etc so doing a perfect diameter circle is not a problem,or cutting a baffle to size.

My issues are

at this moment in time I have no way of measuring parameters or spl or frequency respone roll off etc etc.

And understanding the effects of different inductors/resistors/coils.

I could nominate myself as a guinea pig if my outlay could be recouped with a slight loss if some one in the worksop/retford area could have some positive input.

I rely mostly on my ears and when I've used active crossovers in the past, I've found them intrusive and also having a blanketing effect on the sound. i.e., not as good as a passive crossover. Do you hear anything adverse with the minidsp?

No, can't say I do. Sounds excellent to me. I had Alan (Firebottle) here a while back, he's heard a few members' systems, he commented mine was the best he's heard to date, so I guess it can't be too bad...

Ok, well, you have a couple of options I reckon. Go for a set of drivers that have been well documented in OB use in the past, that will mean there should be easily available info on crossovers to enable you to build your own.

Or go active using a miniDSP. Crossover values can be changed on the fly, so would be easy to tune to your taste/room by ear. You could just use the same drivers as me ( or better, go for Alpair 12's in place of the B200- I have a set in the cupboard for this purpose) in which case you need a Linkwitz- Riley 4th order crossover, crossing at 200hz. That's what works best to my ears.

I have been lucky enough to hear Alis system on a number of occasions. OBs sound fantastic all the openness of statics but with the low down performance of big cabinet speakers with a finesse and subtlety that just makes everyone in the room go quiet.

I may well go down this route one day-they are really efficient letting you use tube or t amps to there best.

I have a pair of 10" Sony ULM bass drivers and vintage Japanese Crysler cellular horn compression drivers I reckon will pair up rather well with this (and some Class A amps I have).
