thorens td160 plinth

Hi all. My brother in law is a chippy and has very generously offered to give me a hand making a custom plinth for my Thorens td160. Does anyone have any reccomendations for woods that would be good for this purpose? Also, if anyone has a Thorens with a custom plinth could you let me know what you use for a dustcover? I had thought about trying to keep the stock look and going for something like this...

...but it would mean i need to keep the width of the plinth as it is currently in order to use the stock dustcover. What does everyone think?

got the cover on ebay. the same guy made my plinth. they are really good covers

using the original lid will then restrict you to a thin section surround, can't remember the thickness of the original TD160 Mk.1 plinth, think it was summert like 1/2" to 5/8'' thick..

Cheers Grant - both the cover and plinth look great. I am hoping to keep mine looking a little more stock though. I guess i could always put the metal bar on the front even if i'm not using it for the dustcover.

What wood did you use for your plinth?

Andre - yep, i think it is about 16mm so pretty narrow. Will having a thicker plinth help with the sound or would it be purely aesthetic?

American walnut veneer. but you could use solid Walnut as Nuff did with his tt. one tip is to make sure you fit a thick heafty base board.

Slightly thicker will make it more sturdy for sure. I don't like over thick plinths, not only do they not look right i think it's unnecessary & tbh will not make it sound better imho.. A 3/4" section & a thick base like the 'TD160 Super' had is good enough..

However like you said you want to use the original dust cover so you kinda stuck at the 5/8" unless you reconsider, you could try source a 'TD160 Super' lid

Look at this guys 'TD150' & 'TD160' in 3/4" section, they look perfect proportion.

Andre - yes, i agree. I much prefer the plinth closer to the original dimensions than really chunky, especailly as i dont have the space to accomodate somehting really bulky! I assumed having them really thick must help the sound? Thinking about it trying to use the exisiting dust cover might create a few problems as i will need to find some wood of a very similar thickness to the original which could well be a massive pain in the arse - the only reason i really want to keep it is that i like the look of the metal bar on the front of the plinth. The TD160 on the link you posted looks really beautiful so i think i will try to do something like that.

Thanks, Nathan. That TT looks absolutley beautiful - the wood is perfect. Can you remember what thickness you went for? I am searching for something around 20mm thick but am struggling to find much suitable.

When you buy wood it's bought as Ex:1" when it's plained up the standard finish size is 3/4", as wood companies in the UK are geared up with metric machinery the finished size will be 19.05mm finish..

Ah, that makes sense - so i need to look for 1" / 25mm thickness wood which will then be planed down to 3/4" / 19mm.

What i was trying to say is the Ex 1" standardised finish is 19.05mm, this is the thickness you should recieve when you buy PSE Hardwood..
