This story in analogue planet has some pretty odd features. http://www.analogplanet.com/content/all-points-bulletin-have-you-seen-turntable
Burglars strike twice - unlike lightning. Fremer says 'Insurance will not cover the loss' I assume he means Clearaudio's insurers. Why not? And more to the point - if it was not insured by Clearaudio why was it not insured by Harry Pearson.
But weirdest of all is that this review had been with Harry Pearson for almost ten years. Whats going on here? Clearaudio don't want their bit of $170,000.00 back? Inconceivable.
It is also interesting to speculate about the Burglars. My guess is that they saw the turntable on the first go and one of the boys recognised it as good kit and hence the second burglary was planned the very next day - though we do not know how far apart the two burglaries were. I think it must be the same burglars because you would have to make specific plans (eg know how to dismantle it). Also I am guessing that it is not going to be sold on, at least not for a very long time. Who knows; maybe the ringleader of this little circus is an audiophile?

I presume that insurance wouldn't cover the cost because HP didn't actually own it, it was on long term loan (10 years) and Clearaudio's insurance won't cover it because it has been in HP's house for ten years!

That turntable would certainly be a very difficult thing to steal though.

I can understand Clearaudio's insurance not coming to the party - almost certainly as you say the item being in someone else's place - surely outside their policy. But HP could insure it - freedom of contract and all that sort of thing. Car insurance where the buyer is buying on HP (Hire Purchase this time) is routine. Maybe the Insurance Company's 'turntable expert' was on vacation! But surely it would just be a 'household chattel'. Maybe the insurance premiums were too much. I think this is an important point because I sniff some litigation in the air. Clearaudio's Position: "We lent you this TT - it is your responsibility to look after it - pay up" seems pretty reasonable to me. One thing for sure, this little imbroglio is a law lecturer's wet dream!

Other questions remain: why did HP not return it?
Did he ever do a review?

I presume HP wrote a review but I haven't read The Absolute Sound in many years. It is not uncommon for reviewers to be loaned equipment on a long term basis - even very long term (though a questionable practise). Clearaudio will have written off the cost of this turntable years ago though. In terms of the insurance, I don't know; I was entirely speculating as my own experience of insurance goes no further than paying the premium and making a couple of claims. However, I wonder how easy it is to claim against a policy held by someone now deceased.

I think it appalling that those scum should have done that and my gut feeling is this gear was stole to order. The chances thieves just decided to rob high end audio gear on a whim is unlikely.

It's hard to remove, hard I imagine to sell on, which is why most thieves go for simple easy to move on stuff not difficult stuff. Most robbery is as a result of drug addiction so quick easy cash is what the thief/thieves need. Specialised theft, I would imagine, is done to order.

Sad story, if it wasn't sad enough that HP is dead.

That turntable will have been destroyed as it was stolen. Having seen one in the flesh that is no easy lift and carry.

Regards Neil

Two man and a getaway driver ain't have done that, as you said not a easy thing to sell on,
hope it doesn;t get pass on to scrap dealer and melted down for it's metal content. :(

On a lighter note, i'd hazard a guess it was Stiffy and the Scottish Mafia, the plot thickens. :D

Agreed, but a $170,000.00 item? - I can't help thinking there must be something more to this.

I think it appalling that those scum should have done that and my gut feeling is this gear was stole to order.
That seems likely. Almost certainly it would have been the same thieves as first. After the 'debriefing' from the first burglary they would have talked about the 'weird contraption' and word would have got out.
Anyway I expect there to be a bunfight about who should be responsible for the loss, but we are unlikely to hear about it because this sort of publicity will not exactly cover Clearaudio in glory.

Maybe it was Clearaudio's way of getting it back and making a claim too. (ever the cynic :))

What time of the day is it with you way over there Andrei?
