Help wanted with semi interesting turntable.

Can't put this in Past masters 'cos "masters' doesn't apply.

However, its an interesting thing to have in the collection even if its not really hi-fi. The cover for the arm gubbins made me laugh. Basically, it's thin card stuck on with double sided tape:lol:

I've had it playing and it works but for the arm lift. Holding the arm up and then letting it drop on the record works OK. The sound is alright even if it doesn't exactly scale the heights. Aker sounded quite reasonable.

When I took it apart, the little white widget fell out. The sliders were all stuck as the grease had hardened. Quick WD to see if it worked, can grease properly later.

The bar on the top obviously adjusts the start and finish points but also obscures the end of the arm lift relay - which clicks in and out quite happily when instructed.

So, does anyone have any experience of these? Can I just undo the adjustment screw and lift off the bar? VE have a Users manual but not a service one. Its an JVC L-E22 by the way.

Well, as you all took longer than 5 minutes to answer my query, being the patient sort, I just took it apart:eek:

Sadly, the little widget goes into another little widget in which the socket for the first widget is broken. As the likelihood of getting a spare part rates about like me winning the lottery I resorted to a tried and tested method.

Now the superglue is dry, it all went back together with only a few swear words and is playing as I type. The arm lifter now works although there is no adjustment to lift height as the superglue is likely to resist movement :cool:

Not sure about the paper cover, might just leave it off so the works can be seen doing their stuff under the plastic lid.

i've got the very same turntable (along with the base unit it came with!)

got it for my 18th birthday.........

mine mostly works, but is waiting for a repair as there is no 'tracking weight' on the arm when it tries to play.

i remember it was the most amazing turntable in the world when i got it (to me at least :)) might see if i can get it going again and find a decent t4p mount cart to put on it

A JVC linear tracker is the whole reason i ended up with a Techy 'SL110' for a couple years in the early 80's.

I was amazed that this still mostly worked, considering where I got the thing. The guy is the mad professor type. His house is immaculate until you go down into the cellar which stretches the whole length of the house. Piles and piles of junk covering several more piles of junk. Every inch covered with old PCs, screens, printers, music centres etc that he is going to get round to fixing one of these days. He makes me feel a model of tidiness. I did cry over a few of the bits though. Two classic 80s amps, a Yamaha and Sansui, just lying amongst the clutter, covered in dust with the innards exposed. I told him I would relieve him of them but he didn't want to let them go. Considering he is happy with his hi-fi, I don't know why. He stopped a wonderful pair of Pioneer speakers going to the dump and drives them with an all in one Philips boom box with multi CD changer. He demonstrated. The speakers showed every flaw in the crap amp. I also made him an offer for the Pioneers. He is too fond of his junk. He considers record players too crap and beneath him to bother with so he was happy for me to have the JVC.

Every now and again, I put out a request on our local Google group for old - you know, redundant, old fashioned, brilliant - hi-fi bits and quite often get people clearing out their lofts. Always hope for a Garrard or Lenco of course but it is usually total crap. I usually get to take it to the dump for them.

Things like this are fun though. For half and hours work and a dab of superglue, I have yet another toy to annoy Ronnie with.

Put it into the main system this morning and OK, it isn't going to frighten the Dual but it really isn't that bad. Maybe with a decent cartridge it would make a pretty decent sound. I might just try it.

the one i had sounded pretty decent with a nice jvc amp and a pair of mission speakers. bro still has the missions

Hehehehe… Indeed, and I believe that you've discovered an intriguing (and highly effective) method for ‘easing the swelling’, but we’ll save that discussion for another day! ;)

Found I have another plug in cart made by Technics which I suspect might be better quality than the JVC one. However, when I tried it there is a loud hum and one channel seems depressed.

Can I assume that the wiring on all is the same? I guess it's possible that the Technics is buggered. I have never used it, it came on a scrap TT some years ago.
