Angle Audio

Hi all. I am planning to upgrade my phono stage from a bottom of the range Pro-ject. I have seen a few reviews on the Angle Audio Audiophile phono stage which sounds really interesting. Has anyone used one and if so would you recommend it? Alternatively if anyone has any similarly priced phono stages (under £150) to recommend I would be interested to hear about them.

I only need MM, but having MC as well would be a bonus.

Don't know much about the Angle, but for £150 there is a Graham Slee Gram Amp 2 SE in the for sale section.
I think it would he hard to beat value for money wise - if it is still available.

Consider a pre built Hagerman Bugle2. Awesome for the money, much better than the Trichord Dino with power supply that it replaced.

I had a Hagerman Bugle2 (and kick myself, often, for selling during a fit of "clean up and clear out") It's quite simply simply superb. Amazing. Punches so far above it's weight class it's embarrassing for many more phonostages that cost much, much more.

I have also heard glowing reports of the Schiit Mani. If I didn't currently have 2 phonostages on my bench in progress I would buy one tomorrow.

I have only used mine for a couple of hrs to test it and it just got better the longer it was on. was running a high o/p denon mc through the mm side and it was not that far off my Firebottle plus imo. Although I am not currently using it I aint gonna sell it either :eyebrows:
G Slee stuff is very good too though I have not tried the one in question

To be honest. Anybody on a tight budget could do a lot worse than getting a used Cambridge Audio 640P off eBay for about £60. They do MM and MC reasonably and musically. I've had two of these and for the money not much else comes close.

I've had both the basic Project and the Cambridge 640 phone stage when I first started down the vinyl path and whilst I agree that there good value, I don't think that the Cambridge is much of a step up from the Project. More a sideways move in my view. I can't comment on the other suggestions in the thread, but found for me, moving from the Cambridge to a Puresound P10 was a real revelation in just how much difference there was to be had from a better phono stage. But unfortunately that's going to be at least double the OP's budget even second hand.

I have one of the Angle "virtual battery" MM stages that I would be willing to move on. It must be an early one as it doesn't have the branding stickers on it, other than that I'd say it's the same as the one available today. I think the battery ones were £25 more expensive than the standard version, I could do it for £70 plus post if you're still after one?

If you can pick up an old Croft Micro (they normally go for £100-150), you also get a stunning MM stage...and the pre knocks most things into a cocked hat too. Think I paid £110 for my Micro II, plus another 70 for Glenn to service it (new valve & HT regulator tube) with a revision to latest 25 output spec. I still use it now (with a few further non-Glenn approved mods :)), and have no desire to upgrade. If you don't want the pre, just use the tape out into your pre.

Thanks for the input everyone. A friend of mine has given me a loan of a Cambridge 640p to try out so i wont be needing a new phono stage, at least for the short term. Looking further ahead though has anyone tried the Temple Audio Harmony http://www.templeaudio.net/harmony.html ? I have heard good things about their amps and the fact that it aslo doubles as a source selection box would make it very useful as my Amptastic mini 1 only has the 1 input. Any thoughts or reviews would be much appreciated.
