As of January 1st, Ian Flemming's James Bond novels have naturally fallen out of copyright in some countries such as Canada and are now fully public domain! 50 years after the author's death, Flemming having died in 1964 and it expiring at the end of that 50th year.

This must be the first time such a thing has happened to such a massively branded Hollywood franchise and is enevitable for all the rest (unless governments around the world are continually bribed to extend copyright terms as has happened in the UK and US with no democratic oversight) so it will interesting what people do with the opportunity.

Move to Canada and write a new bond story, film a new movie.. Although it will bring about some interesting legal problems with copyright control in other countries as any new movie made in Canada would be violating copyright in the US (and UK etc) if publically broadcast! Perhaps we'll see a movie industry pop up in Canada but with straight to DVD for distribution outside of it?

Mmmm... Canadian Bond. Not so sure about that. Canadian co-productions are always terrible for some reason (see: The New Avengers).

But I reckon I could make a better fist of it than the current lot anyway. Quantum of Solace? More like a quantum of originality. And Skyfall was just silly.

They're all silly mate... that's why I love em. Guilty pleasures.

A new bond movie is one of the few things I'd still go to a cinema for. And pretty much anything by Ridley Scott.

There's good silly and there's just silly. In the Roger Moore era they could do anything and get away with it but then they decided to get all serious and realistic with Craig and you can't sit between two stools with these things.

I mean in Skyfall we are expected to believe that the only person in MI5 and MI6 that M can trust is Bond. If it had got that bad then it would be all over. Just nonsense in order to advance the plot. At least they killed Judi Dench off; most annoying M ever, no wonder they were all agin' her ;)

If they stopped calling him a spy then it would be at least a little better, they could then at least expand on the stories.

Yes he's really more counter-espionage than espionage so he should actually be in MI5.

I didn't mind Skyfall, it had a distinctly British flavour and the fact it was the highest grossing of any of the more recent movies shows they must be doing something right.

Poor old m though. I quite liked Judy Dench in that role. It was the villain I thought was ridiculous. Most bond villains are a bit camp to start with but that chap was terrible.

I thought le chiffre and the chap in quantum were far more plausible.

Money is on either Tom Hardy or Idris Elba to take on the role after Craig's next outing. Both would be excellent.

Yup, well he's a killer/an assassin rather than a spy.

Nothing has come close to Casino Royale for me... (the closest film to the book at east to date) The others were just ridiculous. Some were entertaining for sure but some were a bit too silly. Bigger action, bigger gadgets... pah! :)

The bond theme tunes have also been falling way off the mark for me too... can't remember what the last best theme tune was. Might have been Goldeneye but then maybe not...

It now allows people to make films faithful to the novels and get away from all the sillyness of the films. A complete re-start for Bond, more grounded in real life perhaps. New novels can be written on the same theme as the original bond and turned in to great movies. Get back to the 1960s too, cold war etc stop trying to make Bond current.

They'd be more thrillers than action movies though I guess. All other James Bond merchandise is also now fair game, as long as it's all based on the novels, not the films. Could be a mini industry popping up. Sell the house and invest in some Ian Flemming's James Bond merch designs..

Idris would be spot on for the role IMHO.

Oddjob is under MGM's copyright everywhere. Only the books which are public domain.

I agree that would be a good way to go. I was watching Funeral In Berlin the other week. Current setting when it was made but it now plays as a perfect period-piece. Brilliant contrast with the modernity of West Berlin (Templehoff etc) and the ruins and stagnation of East Berlin. Great direction and acting, gritty reality, no silliness. On the other hand, I don't know who has read the books recently but they can be quite silly, Goldfinger in particular is absurd in places.

Having said that my all time favourite Bond is The Spy Who Loved Me. Alan Partridge agrees :)
