I am an engineer (of the mechanical persuasion) who is into a huge range of things including audio (speakers, electronics oh and actually listening to music). I have built many speakers over the years (quasi professionally for a while) and am now working on a fully digital path source-xover-dac-then amps setup from some existing speakers I built. I also have a new to me 7 channel amp that needs a little tlc (Cary Cinema 7B) so I will be brushing off my electronics skills for that one as soon as I find a scope :)

I also am into machining and am building a CNC lathe among other things.

Although it gets in the way of all my projects I do have to go to work where I do structural analysis (FEA) for the offshore industry in Norway.

As for music I enjoy a range of music from Palestrina to progressive techno. Seems like mostly guitar and blues driven rock such as Mark Knofler and groups such as the Tallis Scholars on the early/classical side of things.

The current speakers aren't much to look at, just 2-ways in moderate size boxes (Seas ER15RLY and Seas 22TAF/G) with a tang band W8-1747 based sub with a passive resonator. I moved them to Norway so they had to be small. I have built two versions of passive crossovers designed after listening with emulation using LspCAD but I just am not happy with the sound. This is probably the 20th speaker design I have done and as the most conventional it should be straight forward but isn't. Hence the move to a digital crossover. There is some distortion or a peak getting through somewhere that isn't showing up in my measurements, I might also dump the metal dome tweeters and put some fabric ones in there. the nanoDigi crossover will also allow better integration of the sub-woofer which right now with a plate amp is really difficult to control accurately. Once I get everything else working I will build some new speakers using the electronics. Now that we live in the city in Oslo I really can't use such massive speakers anymore.

One of my previous builds is shown in the attached photos. These are three way (active on the bass passive between the mid and tweeter) with 4 woofers per speaker running series/parallel. They are 1.5inch thick mdf/wheat straw board and all loaded up weighed 165lbs each. They might have been a bit overkill given that I don't try to reproduce nightclub sound levels. I got the woofers used for a good deal and as they were low efficiency and 4 ohm it worked perfectly with 4 per side. My wife was out of town when I built them and was a bit skeptical but actually came around to appreciate the detail and depth you get from "real" speakers. I did see how loud they would go a few times, (while wearing ear plugs with over ear muffs like I would at the shooting range) and it was a thing of wonder if not all that useful.
