If I said I was pissed off I'd be putting it mildly.
Yesterday I was carded with regard to an item, and that the postage was £1.20 short.
Today I went to pick up the item, and I find it's a birthday card for me.

The guy at the counter muttered some apologetic nonsense and showed me a toddlers toy and tried to push it through some slots that were too small for it.
He looked pretty foolish!
Perhaps it was worth the fee seeing a grown man playing with a toddlers plaything!!
Actually it wasn't!
I found the whole episode both pathetic and petty.

It has soured what should have been a pleasant experience, and what's worse the item in question would easily get through just about every letterbox I've ever seen - you can get a f**king Thomson Local through mine, and I'll bet that Thomson don't pay £1.20 a f**king book!!!

Wankers !!!!! :steam::steam::steam:

Annoying when that happens.

http://www.royalmail.com/personal/help-and-support/Tell-me-about-size-and-weight-formats

I guess it was a small parcel thickness package (thicker than 25mm) that only had the postage paid of a large letter (less than 25mm thick)

You should try posting with a franking machine when there are many items to post of all different thickness and sizes and weights. first, second, recorded, special delivery etc...:doh:
Pleased my wife does the posting :)

100% AGREED, they are a joke, they won't go bust though as they were floated last year so the germans will be slowly buying up all the shares and will eventually own it!

At least it will then work. The Germans run a good postal service.

The post to here is wierd. Anything posted within France is here the next day. Anything from the UK is a total lottery. Last week I got two parcels that were posted in the UK two days previously.

This morning I got some bits for the radios that were posted on 14th December. Is it a postcode thing or is it just as bad everywhere?

if I buy something or send something , I nearly always ask for royal mail special delivery . it has been 99% reliable so far
that's not what I can say about couriers but I have found RM service to be exemplary [ ah forgot the letter that was dripping and almost wrecked 2 weeks ago .....but you get the drift!!!]

Going back, had a card pushed through with the usual, went to the sorting office and paid the postage plus surcharge,
was handed a Cash & Carry promotional pamphlet with bit of wrap addressed but no stamp.

Fast forward to just before Christmas, bought knee warmers for winter cycling, came in a small grey plastic packet,
same sorting office scenario, to find it would've easily made to be less than 25mm and be pushed through my letter box,
dumb F*ck postie should have known it was something unbreakable as it felt soft and limp to the touch,
useless piece of skin attached to a knob.

I have nothing but praise for my Royal Mail service, both in delivery and at the local Post Office. Can't say the same for My Hermes, Yodel or City Link before they went bust.

I do however make sure everything I post is well packed, addressed correctly and legibly, with the right postage paid. Maybe I'm just lucky, but judging by the way some people both pack and address their parcels to me, it's no wonder stuff doesn't arrive or is surcharged . . . now is that the Post Office's fault or the fuckwit who sent it? There's only two delivery agents I trust and have nothing but great service from, Royal Mail and UPS.

Just sayin'

On a wider issue, however, Tim, your point has much validity!

I agree with Tim. I've had nothing but excellent service from Royal Mail. My varying local posties have gone out of their way to ensure my deliveries arrive at my address and leave items with my neighbours for me if I'm not available. The local sorting office is effectively run too.

Couriers? Well that's another story altogether.

Every single time i take a parcel addressed to Northern Ireland do i end up in a row with my post office, every single time guaranteed. i have to go to great lengths to print off all associated info to show them. why the hell do i have to keep doing this? The reason i always exclude NI from my record sales..

Absolutely, as Chris was the recipient, nothing to do with him.

I do think there is probably a lot to do with location though, a delivery to my part of Dorset is likely not dealt with the same way as a delivery to say the centre of a busy city. So I accept I am perhaps lucky in that respect. I have also always made a point of (wherever I have lived) getting to know the postie - can't do any harm I reckon?

Basic human nature, if you act like a tosser and people think you're one, you'll get treated like one!

Really, can i just say i do know the regular postie on my run and in great terms with him.

1st scenario was a sorting office procedure and should have exercised common sense.

2nd scenario was clearly not the doing of the regular chap who definitely would've pushed it through my letter box (as witnessed previously with bulky'ish items) ,
it was the annoyance of having to go to the sorting office and they only have one late opening (7pm Wed) or try to catch them before lunchtime Sat.

BTW, no complaints were made both times at sorting office as i am not that type of person.

The OP was my Auntie, although the OP in respect to the forum is me.
Can you imagine how shit it made me feel to thank her for the card in one breath, and then tell her in the next breath what had happened, and not to send such large cards because of the pathetic and petty Post Office rules (and before you ask, yes I did have to make her aware of the situation for the sake of others in my family)?
Happy Birthday Chris!

I have a decent rapport with the Posties that deliver to my house.
The problem is with the Post Office itself!
All the points of contact in between were only acting according to orders and petty rules.

They're gonna go down the tubes if they persist in carrying on like this, and with the way I feel over this incident it's good riddance! :(

On a further note - I recently sent a parcel by special delivery, guaranteed delivery by 1PM the following day.
It didn't turn up until the day after that, and for that they charged me £11.00 - you can bet your bottom dollar that I'm going to make an official complaint, and push for a full refund for failure to deliver within the specified time frame. I wouldn't mind, but the recent snows didn't start falling until the following day.
I sent it Monday, it should have landed Tuesday, they tried to deliver on Wednesday.

The Post Office is not high upon my list of favoured organisation :steam:

Tim
31-01-2015, 20:58
Not so good then Chris, sorry to hear that and I must be lucky (touch wood) but I have never had bad service from Royal Mail - maybe a post code lottery? You should get compensated for the failed Next Day delivery as that's part of the contract.

No probs Tim, just throwing in my experience for balance,
i really do think it's a postcode thing or how big the catchment area is, you are so lucky where you are.

Most recent example, i bought a set of brakes for my up coming bike project from LFGSS (london fixed gear single speed) forum,
waited 3 weeks before i contacted seller, he was surprised at my PM and checked the tracking number that showed up at being processed,
we both agreed to give it another week and he'd refund me if the status doesn't change, nothing showed and got refund,
couple a weeks ago he PM'd me to say the item has been returned to him and never left London, name and address was clear on package,
he offered it to me again, i bought from another seller and he lost a sale, thats how the cookie crumbles i suppose.

Here's one for you then from this very afternoon, now this is just poor service . . . I was in at the time stated and doing nothing that would make me not hear the doorbell (which is very loud). So they either didn't ring or pushed the wrong bell out of the six to choose from. The reference number is not recognised (I blacked it out for anonymity) on the Yodel website and there is no contact number for the local delivery agent . . . what a shower

Just before Xmas I got home from work to find a large box in my porch. The DPD label on it was tiny but it had my address on it and although I wasn't expecting anything I opened it up to find all sorts of crazy crap inside. I took another look at the label and it was my house number but the street name was the adjacent street. I took it round there but no-one in so I left it in their porch. No wonder they had delivered to the wrong street since the printing on the (properly printed, official DPD) label was in the tiniest font possible. What sense does that make?

The other week I had a day off and there is a knock at the door. I don't usually answer the door unless I am expecting someone (what's the point, after all) but for some reason I did and it is the postie with a package for my neighbour. I took it in and he says 'I'll put a card through so she knows where it is'. He put the card through all right but put entirely different house number on it (my house number is right by the door on a fair sized plaque). Result is both I and my neighbour are in and out at different times so I am not able to take it round when she is in but she spends half an afternoon going up and down the street knocking on looking for her parcel.

How hard is it to get these things right? It is basic stuff, not rocket science.

Nail on the head, like you i don't open doors to anything here unless i know i've bought something,
i am an lone occupant and in a rough area.

Your other point mirrors mine too, i work a shit shift 8am-4pm and with only one late evening opening in sorting office,
it's a right royal PITA, all avoidable with a bit of perseverance from staff would alleviate all the grief.

Maybe it's a combination of poor education, no parental role models, a lack of drive and motivation in a society which encourages lack of personal responsibility and not much accountability if you **** up. Get it wrong and . . . "Hmmm, who cares I don't like this job anyway, I would be better off on benefits"

If they fired their dumb asses when they cocked up, instead of 'facilitating and pandering' to their sensitive insecurities and also questioning what benefit's they get, then maybe a bit more effort might be made? As you say, not rocket science, but it's too easy to get away with poor service without 'giving a flying ****' these days and still be able to buy a new iPhone and go down the pub on a Friday night, riding the backs of those that do care.

I agree with Marco it's piss-poor management usually to blame, not the poor stooges doing the actual work. Seems to be a requirement for management these days that you have to think you are a whole lot better than you actually are.

Plus the whole culture nowadays is that if something isn't working right you are required to shut up and pretend that it is because otherwise you are seen as being 'negative'.

Last year i had a small item sent to work {cos i spent more time there than home} however it was being sent by a certain courior. After a week, no item but the sender gave me a tracking number to say it had been delivered & signed for! nop it ant been signed for by anyone there. After chasing up into the next week i decided to get intouch with the seller, he said because it had been delivered & signed for on their web page it was out of his hands. Fair enough..

I got so fed up with chasing around i decided to write it off, it only cost me £20 anyway..

Get this a month down the line the guy i worked for asked me to check his Gas Meter reading {in the locked box outside} You know what coming next

It was in there.

Question one: Why did the Courior marked as signed when it clearly was not
Question Two: What was up with not putting a card thru saying where he had put it
Question Three: Why did he clearly have a Key for the Gas box outside?

Apparently this Driver signing is a habbit with this company.

Secondly you know these really cheap Couriors that run a round in their own cars delivering for a pittence. I watched one the other day park up, get out come into our block, come back out get in his car, sign something & drive off. Putting 2+2 together I went outside to find a Parcel with a record in it for yours truly. The same week i sees him come again did the same for the next door no buzz self signed & off. I ofc clobbered him & told him his days working for this certain company are over when i get on the Phone.I don't care if his is rushing around making 60 deliveries a day to make up his wage, aint my problem.. That crap is putting the customers deliveries & the company they work for at risk of loss..

I think there is a bit of personable responsibility due here with the sender/seller as well. I have tried using the cheap guys for my eBay sales, such as MyHermes and City Link and the postage cost is just too cheap and the service is dreadful. However, the seller often hikes the price on what you pay him, to make a profit, so you think you should be getting a good service. I only use UPS as a Courier now via Parcels2Go and drop the parcel off at an access point. I never charge more than the actual postal charge and often when using UPS, under charge to ensure a value price for my sale and create a good impression. Sadly these guys that run around in private cars for Yodel are often not trustworthy, you get what you pay for like anything.

Here's a good one, some guy is selling an empty Garrard 401 box on eBay at the moment, that is ropey as hell condition wise yet he wants £15.00 to deliver it! Bet you he will pay some guy in a car around £4.00 to deliver it and even if he used UPS it would only cost £7.71 for an insured, tracked delivery - there are some real scoundrels out there, not just the dodgy delivery drivers!

Did the company in question take your complaint seriously? Reason I ask is that I had a similar issue with myHermes and a delivery left on a doorstep without the receiver signing for it and quite frankly they didn't give a toss. Suffice to say that I haven't used them since...

OK, maybe they do deserve some criticism . . . sent a Large Letter packet today, which I had stamped up at home and weighed to check it was the right postage. When I asked for a certificate of posting the cashier printed it out, but held it back and asked me what the value was, it went like this;

A - Its ten pounds
Q - Its not cash is it?
A - No, a CD
Q -You know its not covered
A - What do you mean
Q - Well the proof of posting isn't worth anything, it just proves you gave it to me
A - (Duh) Yes, I know that, to cover for loss compensation
Q - Well you don't get any cover unless you pay for recorded delivery
A - Yes you do, up to twenty pounds
Q - No, all it proves is you gave it to me - it you want cover you will need to buy recorded delivery
She was still holding back the certificate, almost as if she was trying to ransom me into buying a signed for service
A - Can I please have the certificate of posting?
She then gave me a very shitty look and handed it over.

For those that don't know, she was wrong - standard UK 1st & 2nd class mail is covered for loss up to a maximum of £20.00 and refund of postage costs, if you can provide proof of posting and value. If you can't they give you 6 x 1st Class Stamps. Recorded or Signed for delivery as it is now called, ups this value to £50.00.

So Chris, I spoke too soon and she really pissed me off, as she was either very ill informed or deliberately trying to sell me something I didn't want and hadn't asked for, either way she wasn't doing her job properly. She was very abrasive in her manner too and most people would have probably felt pressured into buying a signed for service - absolutely not on :nono:

All post office counters do it dude. The 2kg one is the best, anything over 2kg costs an arm and a leg, I cringe when I go in and some idiot is talked into paying £25 to send a parcel special delivery because it weighs over 2kg.

They are sales people, they have to sell and try to get the customers who don't know any better to spend more.

It's the first time I have encountered it to be honest and I post a fair bit (not as much as you mind). I do understand though, that yes, the hard sell has now arrived at the Post Office counter. What got me annoyed is the fact she was trying to hold me to ransom and actually gave factually incorrect information, either through deceit or incompetence.
