Gents,

About to start a strip down and service of my 401.

The raised chrome letters of the logo panel on front, has got some slight scuffing. I wonder if I can use something like automotive touch up sticks to correct it.

Any experiences with nitty gritty stuff like this ?

Ok, Iīve done a bit of research and there appears to be a few good products primarily aimed at airbrushing on vehicles and so on.

One that pops up frequently is SpazStix Ultimate Mirror Chrome - curious who invented that moniker

Anyway, I got a bottle of the stuff off of the Bay and will let you know when Iīve given it a whirl.

If you want a true metal looking finish, rather than paint. Try aluminised stamping foil. It can be obtained in chrome appearance. It's used on book backs and chocolate boxes. etc. Once applied (with something hot) it can be varnished or laquered to make it hard wearing. You will probably need to get the TT metalwork slightly hot before applying, otherwise it will act like too much of a heat sink and prevent the release layer working. (I used to make the stuff many years ago)

Might be worth talking to Audio Grail (A.Grail on this forum). They do very high quality restorations of 401s et al, and may be able to offer some suggestions.

Ok, progressed this.

I received the aforementioned airbrush paint, and it works brilliant

Highly recommended. A botlle will last a lifetime or 10.000.000 Garrard front panels for sure.

Cheers Ali, yes itīs really great stuff.

I might be able to send you a small sample, no need to buy a full bottle as you need so very little.

Itīll have to wait till after the coming week, as Iīm traveling.

That's a really good job, I have a 401 that one of these days I'm going to fully restore and this was one area I was wondering about - job done now, great stuff :)

Thanks for sharing.

That's very kind Mikkel, but it's going to be around another year before I get round to restoring the 401. I need to move and get a garage/workshop first, but that was the only bit that I was pondering about, thanks for the offer though, but I should be OK. It's not too bad on mine, but it will need some touching up.

Tim:
your is gonna want a full re-finish in reflection of the great chunk that needs putting back in the top, im still in shock that someone actually did that.

I've managed to source a replacement chassis André, so I'll strip the old chassis and transfer to the new. The replacement chassis is sound but will need a paint job, I haven't decided yet whether to stay with the original Garrard brown, or go black. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it though ;)

Not original, but I can't help thinking a gloss black would look lovely...

Yes, I really like the idea of black Ali, not gloss though, I envisage a black satin finish like the current finish in a birch ply plinth with the grain exposed at the sides (I like that layer effect). An ebony stain, not too black, enough to still see the grain and a Danish oil final finish. I would like the deck recessed, so it's flush with the plinth surface. That should keep me busy when I'm retired next year :)

I don't like Flush mounted '401' they look untidy imho & also the units sides are not verical so you end up with a gap all around..
