He he he.... put it this way Dave, if you drive a Veyron and someone asks you to try a Lambo you are not going to be too upset about giving it back are you?

Bugatti for me though, please! :)

Whats wrong with a Shelby AC Cobra, or for that matter a Jaguar XK150?

*thread hijack alert!*

Bugatti, without a doubt, of those two... but if the rules are changing, I'll agree with your Shelby suggestion Barry - but make mine a Mustang GT500 - I need more than 2 seats!

Sorry I am very boring when it comes to cars Marco-I am a car hypochondriac, evry noise I hear when driving I think means that the car will break down any second. Plus I like gadgets which the Lexus has loads of. At the weekend I love driving my wifes Suzuki Grand Vitara-great driving position, nippy and fun.

Marco
15-08-2009, 08:29
Yep, each to his or her own matey :)

I'd have something 'practical' like that too for reliable long distance driving, and the other cars for fun to cruise around the country lanes near where I live.

You've gotta admit though, in terms of sheer style, individuality, and sleek looks, the classics above are in a different league altogether to anything made nowadays!

Volvo !!! - wash your mucky mouth out !!! although the later ones that the police use to tear up and down in are doing a bit to improve the image.
The aquisition of my '99 S Type represented a life long ambition (almost) - I'd lusted after a Jag ever since I can remember seeing one - the E Type would have been the absolute pinnacle of my ambition but my 2 seater sports car days are over, sadly - the S type was a very acceptable second prize, so there!! :ner::ner::ner: .

My views on classic cars have been tarnished by all the crap ordinary cars I have had in the past. A very nasty example was an Austin 1300GT. Looked nice when I bought it-white with a black plastic leather roof. It failed the MOT five times because of corrosion and the welder who repaired it ruined the seats with his blow torch. It had three gearboxes fitted and when I sold it the exhaust was blowing blue smoke because the piston rings were knackered.

I had a 1300GT and loved it, but like all of it's brethren it dissolved in the summer rains.

What the hell have they done to that Mog? talk about style over function! what a joke! only an airhead with more money than sense would have one like that, hilarious!

Mind you, the 'proper' Mogs are fab, though I would still go for a Pinzgauer - portal axles, air suspension, cental spine chassis etc...

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To run throught Marco's wish list:

Corvette Stingray - vulgar,
Aston Martin DBS - understated cool,
Alfa Romeo Spyder - much prefer the looks of the car parked behind in the photo (what is it?),
Mercedes Benz 300SL - acceptable (with just about an acceptable amount of chrome),
Maserati 3500GTI - now you're talking.

is the reason I'm into American cars. When I was about 7, my dad swapped his Escort Van for a 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible, V8, with Hurst manual 'box... Picked me up from school with the top down, the first I knew he was getting it! A bit different to most dad's Morris Marinas, Hilman Hunters and of course Cortinas at the time, don't you think!?

Been thinking about this and I've got to say, bearing in mind that I'm a bit of a petrolhead, if money was no object I wouldn't bother with cars at all, I would get myself a light plane (prop jobbie, twin engined) and smile to myself as I flew along the m-ways gazing down on the traffic jams.....

Very few traffic jams occur where I live - it's the land of peace and tranquility, which is one of the main reasons why we moved here from Glasgow, which was, errm, 'slightly different' in that regard!

Too right, matey - that's a cool set of wheels for a dad to have! :respect:

There's definitely a certain charm and element of coolness with some 'brutish' American cars - I can't quite put my finger on it. For me, the golden age of cars (from most manufacturers) was the late 50s to late 60s. The style of design of some of the cars produced by prestigious manufacturers around that time (such as I have shown) were for me second to none and oozed pure class and sophistiction, which is the sort of look I love (American 'brute' cars aside) - I'm just that sort of guy ;)

Then CAD came in, f*cked it up, and everything lost its individuality! :steam:

Another one to add to my list...

Pontiac Firebird Trans Am:

Too right, matey - that's a cool set of wheels for a dad to have! :respect:

Well, as no one else has taken the plunge, I'll post details of my pride(s) and joy. This is my current daily driver - 2008 Chrysler 300C - an (almost) sensible "American" car (American designed, but basically a Merc underneath as it was designed in the "Daimler Chrysler" days when Mercedes owned them.)

I love it to bits, though some people will probably think it is an Austin Tayshus (get it??!)

http://i653.photobucket.com/albums/uu259/Alex_Steel1969/Santa%20Pod%20300C%20Meet/Santa%20Pod%2004072009/IMG_1321a.jpg

(The reg no I bought for my baby girl when she was born last year - September 21st - she's called Tamzin Daisy Laura.) I bet she won't think I'm a cool dad at all!!! My wife hates the car, and refuses to drive it. I love the fact that it is a bit different, plus it has a great Boston Acoustics sound system, which is ace! (WHF gave it 5 stars (really!) so it must be good!!! :eyebrows:) I love the built in sat-nav, don't know how I managed before!

And this is my weekend toy (since the two wheeled missile stays in the garage these days, on the count of not wanting to become an Organ Donor now I'm a dad...)

http://i653.photobucket.com/albums/uu259/Alex_Steel1969/IMG_1048Sb.jpg

"Maggie" the 1991 Land Rover Defender spent many years doing charity work in Africa until I bought her last year to give her a well earned retirement here in Suffolk... then thrash her to within an inch of her life off-road! (Well, it's a Landy - they're supposed to do that...!)

This sounds a bit trite, but i really don't think I'd change either of them if money were no object... I would add some others though, 1969 Dodge Charger - a.k.a The General Lee a definite, Marco!

Although in a 'cost no object' dream world, it would be easy to go for the obvious 'boring' choice of a Veyron or something like a 250GTO, but if I could have anything, it would definately be an Aston, and one of the new ones at that.

In fact, it would be the new Aston V12 Vantage, which combines truely beautiful lines and a car which is relatively compact (just see a Lambo in the flesh to see what I mean), with that awesome V12 engine.....

And me - hence why I posted a pic earlier of said car! :)

For me, modern cars (as reliable and well-equipped as they are) lack 'soul' compared to the best vintage designs - it's a bit like valve amps and solid-state, or vinyl and digital ;)

Also, I like to be able to do some basic servicing on cars (change plugs, oil, air filter, etc) and be a bit 'hands on'. You can't do that with cars now - everything's bloody computerised!!

I also hate the way that CAD has destroyed individuality and made all cars a basic 'shape' (I value things in life that are bespoke and hand-made/built with 'love'), and the use of bloody plastic and cheap materials (even on expensive cars) instead of the likes of wood and chrome; everything is 'built to a price' now with out-and-out profitability being the main goal - I could go on...

Don't get me started on another area where freakin' computers have spoiled the 'romance' of life. Grrrr!!

My fault for just scanning things quickly before going out... That's about the nicest Ferrari I've seen. It is quite stunning. I tend not to like modern Lambos and Ferraris because they're rather too pretentious in style and smack of what dumb footballers might buy - ditto that ridiculous looking Bugatti Neil loves (sorry, Neil!!)

Oh! Is it only classic cars that are up for delectation? Then it has to be the Shelby Cobra 427

Nope - just what for you hits the spot :)

Now the last one's more like it!! I much prefer that Shelby to the one Mike posted - lurvely

What vintage is it, Barry?

 It's the same model Marco! Just in different livery.. :)

How would I know? I'm not a bloody Shelby expert - it looks completely different without the 'livery' (those ridiculous exhausts) and a decent paintjob! :ner:

And anyway, what vintage is it? I'm not sure that was answered before...

Sorry can't help you there; I just typed in Cobra 427 into Google and chose the best image. I also like this one - bit more chrome, but not too much (and not enough to keep Coca Cola in business :eyebrows:).

I'm a bit of a sucker for wire wheels. My late father at one time drove a Daimler V8 with wire wheels - it turned heads.

I like the wire wheels but don't like the exhaust :)

It's much more elegant looking in the previous picture.

'Brutish' doesn't suit the Chelby - save that for Dodges and Transams!

Sorry Marco, but brutish is exactly the right word. Just look at the elegance of the original car, and compare it to the teenager's wet dream that resulted when a bloody great V8 was shoved up the poor thing's nose..

Bit of a penis replacement vs the original's svelte looks.

Wouldn't turn my nose up at that one either. However are we just talking about looks or performance? Any of them would do me.

I don't think there's ever been a car more suited to the 'brutish' title than a Shelby... It was a complete monster to drive.

Basically, take a Bristol Ace and shove a dirty great Ford V8 engine in it, and you have the Shelby Cobra.

A similar but slightly more refined approach is a Sunbeam Tiger - take another quaint British sportscar, (Sunbeam Alpine) and "bastardize" (sic!) it with a big (4.3L) American Ford V8

My tastes are quite modest. I really like the Alfa Brera but its probably not as good as it looks?

From what I've read it is very good,as long as you remember it is a GT car,not a sports car.I used to have a 166, best car I've ever owned.
