Maybe we can develop your interest in good sounds. Everybody should have something decent to listen to their music on.

A car buff is always welcome. We have loads of avid motorists here. Some have pretty damn good motors. Quite a few bikers here too.

I'm not too shabby at finding my way around a motor myself, but it's many years since I rebuilt one.

If you have any questions about Hi-Fi though, just fire away.

I actually do have a question.
While I was doing a little retail therapy in the local electrical stores I noticed quite a few of these home cinema systems and it got me thinking are these just cheap crap put together to look like a good deal or are they actually any good?
Now I know car audio and generally package deals never quite make the mark for me they usually are outdated products put together just to make a sale would this be the case with These off the shelf kits?.
this question also covers the ready made hifi systems you see on the shelf.
Just thoughts its cheaper to ask than to experiment..😆😆

It certainly is ;) ...Much depends on your requirements really. I wouldn't call them crap, but you usually get more sound quality when you go the separates way or buy higher quality systems. My son has a Denon midi system which was 300/350 i think and it is rather good for what it is, but of course you could do better for the money buying second hand and separate. Of course the benefit of some of those systems are that they are compact and easy to setup/use

I know some here like their home theatre/home cinema systems. But as you suggest, unless you spend a lot of money the gear is pretty crap! The same does apply to car audio (and any other kind of audio stuff). There are some off the shelf, same make systems that are very good, but again, not cheap (not even the 'budget' ones).

Some may disagree, but to me the only true sound reproduction for modern real Hi-Fi is proper two channel stereo. (I'll probably get the surround sound and mono mafia after me now :lol:).

Hi Kev,

If sound quality is more important than price or convenience, then separates are always the way to go, simply because no one manufacturer can be best at everything. Therefore, a company who makes great amps may not make the best speakers (or CD players), and vice versa.

The key, therefore, when building any hi-fi system (for car or home audio/AV) is to select equipment from those who specialise in the particular components they make, in order to end up with the best possible sound - but even then that takes some experience to get it absolutely spot on! :)

In that respect, the packages you refer to will always be a significant compromise.

Welcome to AoS Kev.

I don't know much about home theatre systems, but as much in life "you get what you pay for". That's not to say there are not bargains to be had out there, just as some items of audio gear are bargains, but you have to know what you are looking for.

We have a few members here who are into home theatre - why not start a thread in the AV Studio?
