Hi, bobreel now registered. Bobreel, 'cos my passion is for open reel tape recorders, and, when said quickly, sounds like Bovril. Main music source FM radio, usually BBC2, musical tastes very varied. I listen mainly to Blues type music, as presented by Bob Harris. I have about 60 LPs of mainly pop music, with some classical. The equipment: Ariston RD80/RB250/AT30E. Open reel: Sony and Revox. Cassette: nakamichi cassette deck1. Amp: NAD C370. Speakers IMF TLS50 11's. Cables mostly philips from Comet a few years ago. Speaker cable Shark AWG 10. Oh and a Marantz CD6005. No digital equipment for streaming, but the TV sound and Youtube from the laptop are also routed through the system.

Wow super response folks! Thanks for your comments. Yes Geoff, I just love those IMF's. Bass that penetrates your soul. I am going to recap the crossovers in the new year. I've had them since 1981 and suspect they have gone a bit off tune over the years. As to the TD20A, I have seen them come up on ebay from time to time, and have been tempted to have a punt, then reality dawns as I realize I don't need another reel to reel. Very desirable machines though.
Music? I like John Fahey, Leo Kottke, folk rock, 70's rock, classical, some pop: Amy Winehouse, Amy Macdonald etc. Probably easier to list what I'm not so keen on .

As an aside, I went into a guitar shop with my son for him to try out various electric guitars prior to an upgrade. We were there for hours with him playing away into a valve amp. The manager, said when questioned,"Oh its for the sound you get when driving them hard. Everyone want valves these days"
So after all these years of me trying to obtain hi fi with ultra low distortion, I find out that musicians want harsh sounding amps driven into clipping! Hmm.

Hi Marco, I'm outa town, in Trevor. About 10 miles out Llangollen way. Are you associated with the hi fi shop in your area? If yes, the chances are we may have met and chewed the cud about mc/mm cartridges and open reel tape a couple of years back when I bought some gear there.

I know exactly where you are (as we often go to Llangollen, and so pass by Trevor). One of our favourite haunts used to be Bryn Howell, when it was really good, with the award-winning Welsh chef there (Dai something?) Rumour has it that it’s got better again, but we haven’t been for ages.

I haven’t worked in Acton Gate Audio, but know the guys there well. We should hook up for a music listening sesh sometime in the new year :cool:

Yes Marco, good idea. As for valves,my memory of them is the nasty hot humming thing in my 1964 Dansette record player.(It only had the one, triode pentode EL84?). However, I understand things have moved on a bit since then, and valves are once more serious contenders in the quest for quality sound reproduction.

Bob, valves sort of went 'out of fashion' in the late sixties when transistor amps were making inroads into the Hi-Fi market. Then, in the later seventies people realised that something was missing, so valve amps became sought after again. People like Radford and TVA Mentmore for instance, started making new valve products. Since then there has been a very good market for valve amps and alongside also good quality solid state units too. I use both.

Happy new year to you all. In defense of my Dansette days, though the player was junked in 1993, I still have all my lps from that era. I also disconnected the weedy little amp and fitted a stereo sonotone 9tahc ceramic cartridge with leads out of the back in the early 70's. This was fed into a Sinclair amp and home brew speakers connected with bell wire. My first foray into hi fi. Oh, and I never stacked my lps on the autochanger, always played one at a time.

Sounds like you are a bit of a tape buff. In the past I used to use a Ferrograph Series Six ('built like a battleship' and with all-triode electronics) reel-to-reel and a couple of Nakamichi cassette machines, but now these have been retired. I still have a Nagra IV-S reel-to-reel machine which I use to playback some of the tapes I recorded of concerts off the radio.

Nice tastes in music - I love Leo Kottke and John Fahey. :)

I like to use Germanium based Transistorised amps.. they are kind of a compromise sound that sound more like vintage valves amps than Silicon Transistorised amps..
