RIP Tony Bolton

Hopefully this is the correct place for this. I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tony just the other day.

He was always a pleasure to meet and a committed audiophile and vinyl fan. His columns in Hi-Fi World were
always interesting to read and the thing I liked most about him was his no bullshit attitude to reviewing, he always
said it as it was.

He will be sadly missed and my thoughts are with his mother and brother at this time.

80% of the music I listen to comes through the Amadeus System. It would probably become 100% if I ever get to modify the Technics 1210 or if I ever buy an Inspire HI-FI Monarch.

I firmly believe that the proper successor to the idle driven turntables that conveyed most of the music I heard as a youngster and into my early twenties, in the late seventies, are not the Clear Audios of this world or even the SMEs and the Avids, but the well engineered direct driven TTs. I also believe that my Garrards 301 and 401, like any good and correctly tuned idle wheel driven turntable, for instance, a Thorens TD124, still are in many ways far better than any of the most exquisite belt driven turntables, independently of the music genre or the records we play.

Only heard this news today and both Mrs. B and I are deeply saddened. Tony was a fine fellow and a valued compatriot. I shall greatly miss the cable arguments we used to have! I'll be spinning a 78 or two in his memory in the next couple of days. RIP Tony, and it was a pleasure to have known and worked with you.

On the few time I met Tony he was very polite charming and fun to talk too.

I worked with Tony for nearly five years when I edited Hi-Fi World, and found him an extremely affable chap. Honest, charming and eccentric in the nicest of ways, he will be missed. He had a lot of friends, in many circles, and everyone is in shock. All my best to his mother and brother Ed. RIP Mr B.

Thanks Marco. In the circumstances I thought it was the least I could do, to pay tribute to Tony. Great to see there's a thread here on AOS. A true audiophile antiquarian, his passing is a great loss to all of us analogue addicts. Wishing you and yours a happy new year!

Yup, I didn’t know Tony, but read and enjoyed many of his articles in HFW. I certainly agreed with most of his views on hi-fi and his proclivities towards vinyl and, in particular, his love of direct-drive and idler turntables. Above all, he seemed to be a good man.

Btw, I need to change your title, as you’re no longer editor of HFW, so what should we call you now, as long as it’s polite? :D

Funny, I was thinking about Tony today and went looking for his presence on the internet, only to find this thread for him.

I have been friends with Tony since my early/mid 20's, some 20 odd years. He was pretty pivotal in igniting an interest in Hi-Fi all those years ago where he would enthuse about his vintage Lenco and Leak gear and speak about Hi-Fi and sound with such authority and depth of knowledge that it left me in awe. Actually he could speak about almost anything with authority and depth of knowledge that was awe inspiring. A very bright man. He was also a real gentleman, was always ready for 'a cuppa' and a chat and was a lot of fun to be around. Our mutual friends would all agree that about him.

I attended his ceremony in Devon together with friends and the shear number of people there really did reflect how popular a person Tony is. I for one will really miss him. RIP Tony.
