View Full Version : Something nice for Christmas?
Did anyone get anything nice either for their system or some music for Christmas?
Luckily I had both. First off I had some rather good vinyl, Shelby Lynne 'Just a little lovin' 200g vinyl and Bach 6 Cello suites Janos Starker. This is simply stunning on vinyl!
Secondly, kindly thanks to Brian I had an IC cable which maybe familiar to a few on this forum.:eyebrows: Brian manufactured a 1.4 metre Klotz MC5000 cable with MS Audio RCA plugs. I have used this to connect my Croft 25R+ and Croft Series 7 power amp. This has only had 10 hours burn in but already I am extremely impressed with its performance in my system.
I will add my conclusions to the very long running cable thread which has extensively reviewed this superb combination. However my Initial thoughts are that it does the ideal thing a cable should and that is get out of the way of the system and just allow the equipment to perform without colouration or constriction of the audio signal.
In comparison my old cable sounds as if it was holding back information, both subtle nuances and depth and richness in the mid range and bass. I could go on but I will wait until it has fully settled in and I have been through a good deal more music.:)
This may well be my best Christmas present (how sad am I?) :lol:

I got the Beatles Mono vinyl boxset, I bought it myself back in September listened to it then gave it to my wife to give to me as a Christmas present as it was so expensive and didn't want her buying me other stuff for Christmas too but she did anyway:eyebrows:
I really can't recall what my system consisted of back then, (Rega Brio-R and JR 149s & Firebottle MM phono stage, I think) but now I've a Quad 34 Pre/ 306 Power amp set up and no external phono stage and I tell you something those mono records sound absolutely amazing and much much better sounding than I remember them sounding with the previous amps and speakers.
The astonishing thing for me is the soundstage & depth from a mono record that I never thought was possible but I think that's down to the Harbeth P3s.
Love the records and my system now.

Jim I was never a Beatles fan, thought a lot of thier stuff was frankly shite but this boxset has completely changed my mind, I put on a load of the records yesterday during Christmas lunch and my wife was bopping away and signing the songs, that's when you know the stuff and the sounds are great, she was unconsiously loving the sounds.
That to me was worth the admission price of the records.
BTW, ever record in that box set is practically silent, the only one slight blemish is Revolution which sounded a bit distorted, like a dirty stylus, even my wife looked up when it started so we put it off.

So is my original, it seems recorded that way. There is still some dodgy stuff in there but the surprising thing is just how great most of it still sounds. I revisit regularly and never fail to enjoy the fab four.

I suppose it could be said that he is/was not exactly the world's greatest drummer:eyebrows: However, for all his technical shortcomings, he seems to me right for the band and provides a steady drive with McCartney. Somehow, he seems to be pretty musical too. I would venture to suggest he definitely wasn't the world's best singer... or actor.
Got myself some new 6922s, JAN Phillips 6183 and Sovtek 6h30pi-eb in a care parcel from Jim Mcshane in the states. Jim is highly recommended - all of his tubes are GM balanced between triodes an selected for low noise. Excellent packaging too.
I'm particularly pleased with how quiet the EH 6922s are - they sound fabulous compared to the tired and noisy GL 6922s I was using previously. My preamp is very fussy, and it seems the EH6922s are pretty much the only ones that are quiet enough and durable enough to make the grade.
I treated my power amp to an octet of new KT120s, so everything is about as good as it could be sonically at the moment.

I got a REL Stentor III and omg that is one impressive sub the best bit is that it was an absolute bargain, previously had the dali helicon s600mk2 and found it wooly and difficult to integrate the rel by comparison just seems to blend in. just a side note the wife gave me her christmas list but I went and got mine :) that way we both got something we wanted I wasn't even looking for a sub but when this one came up it was too good to let it go.

Santa brought me a tiny Lindy DAC to use in the living room with headphones for listening to drama and comedy off of the TV without deafening the missus.
The little thing is so good it fair knocked me out and has instead replaced the Beresford 7520 in the listening den - the sound through my Quad 33/303 is precisely what I have been looking for and hoped to achieve with the 7520. Amazing quality for under £40 !!

Same with me Tony, bought the Mono set in September and packed away until Xmas morning! Very kind of Jane, my wife, to wrap it up for me.
I bought my son the Flying Lotus LP on double vinyl.....sounds good.

Aye think the Maplins dac is about £30 too but I find the output quite low, I only use it for the TV into the Quad pre but I find I have to crank the volume knob up a bit which can be a bit of a pain with other sources taking the windows out if I forget to turn the knob :eyebrows:down:doh:

I got a lovely new amp... a guitar amp!
It's the Blackstar HT5R Half Stack which comprises of the HT5R Head and a HT-112 speaker cabinet. It has a lovely tone and I love it..Thanks to Colin for my super pressie :D

I got a new headphone amp (courtesy of Rich B of this parish) paid for by my much better half. Creek OBH 21SE for those that are interested and I absolutely love it! I also got some Superlux 668B headphones, which are astonishingly good given the price tag! I read a couple of threads on here about them and at that price they're a no-brainer. Lastly a new cartridge for the turntable, an Ortofon 2M Blue. After the faff of fitting it myself (never having undertaken anything like this before) I'm well pleased with it. I think in future however, if I buy a new cartridge, I'll buy it from a different dealer where they'll fit it for me - long story! All in all a very good Christmas :).

I'm a big fan of the 2M Blue myself, it showed my pricier Rega exact a clean pair of heels.... A friend also uses one on his RP6 to very good effect.

Yes it's great Rich - I've never listened to so much music on headphones! The 2M Blue is lovely, there's so much more detail than the 2M Red. I think I might be taking it over to Doug Brady's at Warrington this weekend as I still don't think that I've got it set up correctly. I just wish I'd gone there in the first place!!
On a separate note, (and sorry for taking this off topic), I had hoped to make it up to the NEBO this weekend, but can't now as a friend has inconsiderately booked his 40th birthday party for Saturday evening!! There's a possibility that it might not happen as he's been quite poorly of late; if so I might still make it yet Rich!

Fortunately - my neighbors are very far away - I can really go nutso. Played Cloverfield - the room felt like it was moving - I love this thing.

Congrats - I very nearly went with the 15HP myself, but the shipping price is too high. Went with a BK Electronics XXLS400 12" as a trial, but may swap for the Rythmik sub later (especially as my wife might not notice the difference). I don't need the extra output or extension, but it is a nice, fast clean and powerful sub.
