View Full Version : Time to replace the car stereo system….

Marco

Ok, the Harman Kardon stereo/Sat-Nav system in the Merc has had its day, kaput, as in it no-worky - amp and head-unit both. I’m told by the local dealership that it’s going to cost £3k to replace them (and it’s an old system which would be getting replaced, fitted to a car that’s seven years old). So I think   ‘fook that’!! :nono: :nono:

So what to do? Have a rethink and go for plan B, of course: a complete rebuild...

Since I’ve been dealing with Kevin at BM Wizard (see the existing thread in Abstract Chat), recently for all my car servicing, and finding out that he’s also a wiz at fitting in-car stereo systems, I give the job to him instead, and chose all the necessary components from a company Kevin highly recommends, called Car Audio Security: http://caraudiosecurity.com/

I wanted to spend less than the £3k quoted for the (now outdated) HK system, and also achieve a significant upgrade at the same time, sonically, and in terms of having a goodly dose of some up-to-date technology, and as I wanted to use JBL speakers, being a long-time fan of the brand, the net result is this……...

Head unit: Kenwood DNX-4250DAB - Double-Din CD/DVD Sat-Nav DAB Bluetooth Stereo System. This has almost every toy you can imagine, including DAB radio [see here http://caraudiosecurity.com/dnx-4250dab-double-din-cd-dvd-sat-nav-dab-bluetooth-stereo ] (£689.99):

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/540/RTvzF5.jpg

JBL MS-52C - 2 way 13cm units (including crossovers and matching tweeters), for the front speakers (£149.99):

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/912/RPhtQk.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/673/5gpfNW.jpg

JBL GTO529 - 5.25"/13cm 135W speakers, for the rear door speakers (£89.99):

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/913/kYPSFn.jpg

JBL GTO-1214BR - 12" Bass Reflex Enclosure Ported Subwoofer (£109.99):

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/911/AGbROk.jpg

JBL GTO-804EZ - 4 Channel Power Amplifier, 200W [used in bridged mode] (£179.99):

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/661/4iRkI1.jpg

And all hooked up with this stuff: Connection, by Audison S 210 - 10 Gauge speaker cable (£11.50 per metre):

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/661/nlx4tc.jpg

I’ll also by adding some Dynamat sound-deadening material throughout the car, but don’t know exactly how much yet to work out an exact cost.

Cost so far: £1219.95 (excluding speaker cable, as I don’t know exactly how much will be needed, Dynamat, and labour).

All will be getting fitted next week. I’ll take some pics when it’s installed and report on how it sounds… Happy Christmas to me!! :carrot:

Looks pretty good Marco.
I'm sure your installer knows this - but just checking - you will need a couple of tweeters at around ear level. If they are co-axial (and not removable) they will be poor sounding; directionality of high frequencies an' all that.
Does the system play flac and/or mp3? I find that music (mp3 at 320) played from a flash drive sounds better than CD. I dont think it is possible to totally remove vibration from the CD player.
One more thing: I doubt you will be doing the installation of the dynamat, but if you are then let me know - I can offer a couple of tips.

The Kenwood hasn't got aptX Bluetooth in case you weren't aware... that is 1 better than A2DP i.e. it is lossless.

So unless you are big style into Bluetooth, which I suspect you are not as you'd know, don't worry.

BUT if you plan on using your phone a lot with say TIDAL lossless which allows you to buffer albums on the device, you won't be up there with the best quality available.

I know this because I have just told my wife to buy an aptX Sound Blaster E5 headphone amp for the aux input in my car for Xmas. The aux input lacks sensitivity so needs an amp.

Yup, ’tis sorted!

I’m pretty sure it does, certainly mp3. It defo does more than enough for my needs. The plan is to just get it installed and then play with it and get to know all the functions.

I dont think it is possible to totally remove vibration from the CD player.

Probably not, but we’ll do what we can in that respect.

First of all, I’d have to buy a smart phone which can do all of those things, as my current ancient one wouldn’t even know what that was! :eyebrows:

However, an Apple ithingy will be added in due course. The stereo system was never designed to be ‘state of the art’, but rather just something much better than I had, and in that respect I’m quite looking forward to hearing the results

Well I suspect you'll use A2DP then cos hardwiring in a car when the iThang will auto-connect over the air is a PITA. A2DP sounds acceptable enough.

Enjoy car systems can sound simply great. Background noise withstanding!

It’ll be more than acceptable enough. The primary use of the stereo will be to play CDs, mostly those I’ve ripped from my vinyl set-up. I also wanted a quality up-to-date Sat/Nav system and DAB radio.

As Joe says, that’s something big Mercs are particularly good at. There’s precious little background noise inside their solidly constructed, luxury cabs, or from their super-smooth engines. If the road surface is good, I can cruise along at 100mph (as I do when on the Autobahn in Germany) and only hear a gentle swish! :)

I've just done 13 years with Mercs... moved on now. Some of the recent diesels I test drove (a few months ago) though were super noisy when accelerating. Fine when cruising. When I got back to the dealership continually complaining about it they conceded they'd never be as nice as the 3L petrol V6 in my last Merc. Mind you that ate petrol but IMHO that was worth paying for.

Trying to avoid the noise on the GLA, I tried the 250 and came back with 21.7 MPG on the clock. No way...:D

That’s why I don’t like the new Mercs - every time I drive a new C-Class (not to mention how ‘boy-racer/blingy’ it looks, both inside and out), I can’t wait to get back into my own car. For me, the 2007 models were the last of the ‘proper Mercs’.

I’d never go back to a petrol car, though. I love the sheer torque and frightening power of a nice big (tuned) diesel engine! :)

Ok, Santa must be looking after me, as I’ve just received a wee Christmas bonus…

Haggling for a discount, as one does, with the company supplying all the parts, because I’m spending quite a bit of dosh, they’ve told me that I can have the superior model Kenwood head unit, the DNN-6250DAB - 6.1" WiFi Double DIN CD DVD Sat Nav with DAB, instead of the previous model I listed, so I’ll now be using one of these chaps, which does the Wi-Fi thing too, and has a more up-to-date Sat/Nav system:

Full details here: http://caraudiosecurity.com/dnn-6250dab-6-1-wifi-double-din-cd-dvd-sat-nav-with-dab

Not only that, they’re also going to chuck in the current models, which have replaced the front speakers I was going to get, that are much better (and now also match the rear door speakers):

What JBL say about them:

Depends on the size of engine and other factors, Mark. My C320CDI (Avantgarde SE) has been remapped to just under 300bhp. Besides, I’m not out to have the fastest car on the road - just a nice quick, comfortable one, that’s fun to drive and puts a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel.

That’ll be even more the case now when this new stereo is fitted! :)

Hmm.. Looking at AMG E class estates at the moment myself. Current twin turbos are very very rapid, and the engine note means that you won't want a stereo to drown it out (unlike my e320 cdi, which sounds... like a diesel)

That’s a strange one, Alex, because mine really doesn’t *sound* like a diesel at all (as quite a few petrol car drivers have commented)… Indeed, when I drove a brand new petrol C-Class recently, as a loan car, while mine was at the dealership getting something done, it didn’t really sound much different to my own car, apart from lacking the ‘oomph’ I’m used to.

The noise from the engine in mine doesn’t sound much like anything, really, just a quiet-ish ‘purr’…. There is no clunkiness or ‘tractor-like’ noise, such as one usually expects from diesels :)

Marco.

The whole thing looks juicier and juicier Marco. Regarding the dynamat: it is swings and roundabouts. The good news is that you can put it 'everywhere' - both internal door panels, in the footwells, boot. The bad news is that it costs. Not only is it expensive in its own right, but because of its weight you will now have a heavier wagon. Another thing to consider is the sound-absorbing panels they have for placing opposite the speaker baskets. I have not tried them as I thought just one per speaker would not be effective and to use four or nine was pushing the price up. The main things to remember in application is to clean the surface it is going on, and above all a proper roller is essential for application. If you want to go all out you can change your tyres to low noise. I used Bridgestones - the RE001s that I believe have now been superseded. They take a couple of decibels off the road noise.

Anyway, an interesting thing that was mentioned in the video was how inexpensive the JBL kit (amps and speakers) were, yet how superb it all sounded, considering the price. That (and the fact that I’m a bit of a JBL fanboy) was exactly the reason why I went for JBL - it’s the old AoS SPPV thing!

Quite simply, JBL have hugely larger resources than most other car amp/loudspeaker manufacturers (together with a fantastic heritage), so are able to take advantage of ‘economies of scale’, thus producing stuff at affordable prices other (smaller, more niche) manufacturers would charge much more for, but that the JBL stuff can compete with in sound quality.

In that respect, it was rather interesting that the chap from Car Audio Security, who could’ve fitted anything he wanted in that Audi, chose JBL ;)

Marco.

Not sure about the current range as I have been out of the game for a few years, but back in the mid 'noughties' when I used to sell ICE gear Infinity speakers were up there with JBL, both brands had their loyal followers and each would claim their choice was the right one, much like the domestic scene... :D

I'm impressed by that RS4 install it is very neatly executed. One thing which did concern me though is the touch screen on that head unit, it's a bit clunky and slow to respond to inputs. The one in my motor responds to the touch instantly...

Marco
19-12-2014, 09:08
Indeed. Luckily, that’s not the one I’m getting! ;)

Agreed on Infinity. That would be the other brand I’d be looking at. Interesting vid on YouTube, on the JBL power amp:

The amps are mighty fine with features one could only dream of in this price bracket when I used to sell this sort of kit :)

Ah but Marco, you know how to set up a sub properly, unlike the majority of kiddies I'd serve back in the day. Our installation engineer would carefully calibrate everything before it left the workshop only for said kiddy to turn up back at the shop a few days later wondering why his amp/speakers (or both) had blown when he turned everything up to 'eleven'...

Anyway, here’s a video showing a similar system to the one I’ll be getting installed in my car, from the same company (Car Audio Security). The fat bloke’s rather annoying, but other than that it’s quite good. Love the Audi!!

There is a CD changer in the boot that I have never played with.

Not to thread crap but I believe that driving needs 100% concentration, especially at the speeds I tend to use habitually. Music would grab my attention and take it away from the road and surroundings. People think that Ronnie and I are not speaking when I drive. Its true, we don't.

I can't remember ever having the music on when driving, even when I were a lad. Mind you, that is such a long time ago that memory may not be entirely accurate.

That’s an interesting point, Gordon. Del and I do talk when we’re in the car and I’m driving, but not a lot, as I too find it distracting. *However*, not so with the RIGHT music…

When I’m in the car I tend to play what I call ‘driving music’, which is usually some throbbing metal or heavy rock/blues, or some pumping dance choons, so as it’s all of the rather ‘lively’ variety, I actually find it helps me concentrate (and also awake on long distances alone).

However, if I played some classical, jazz or folk music, it might have the opposite effect! Different strokes for different folks, I guess? :)

When I get this new stereo fitted, I predict I’ll probably have to put a bed in the car! :D

Apparently dance music makes people drive faster and playing rock music in the car tends to lead to aggressive driving, of course that could all be utter bollocks... :D

Pal of mine was nicked for speeding. Playing loud rock music at the time so he blamed it on that. Stopped playing loud rock music whilst driving and instead switched to listening to tapes of particle physics lectures. (He's a bit of a boffin).Turned out worse since he was having to concentrate so hard to follow what was being talked about he ended up nearly rear-ending the cars in front. Now he listens to talking books, but only ones he's heard before so he doesn't have to listen too closely.

Yes I'd like to get to NEBO but with it being middle of January it is a bit dependant on the weather. Looks like we will have another mild winter at the moment but I'm not counting my chickens. Anyone ever tried a 12V capable class-D amp in a car? Maybe with full-range drivers attached! Imagine the audiophile kudos when someone sees Jordan JX-92s around the car with a Temple Audio monoblock powering each one and a transformer-based passive up front (some balance and fade control added of course). Perhaps a bit more bass is needed, although folded horns might fit in the door panels somehow. Just plug in your Astell and Kern mobile player up front.

I'm not sure if you retained your steering wheel controls - but it is possible with the PAC SWE components.

Here is a youtube I put together a while back with the setup in my car.

Yep, that’s already been confirmed, so the steering wheel controls have retained their functionality. Our cars will certainly be similar. Mine just has a bigger engine, and I think it's Avantgarde SE status just means it’s a bit posher inside. Guys, I’ll be posting some piccies of the system install soon! :)

The car’s away again today getting the new remap done (as I’ve done away now with the tuning box I was using), simply because Kevin will do a better job, as that really is his specialist field. I had expected to have that completed in time for collecting the car last week, but the stereo system, soundproofing, etc, took longer to complete than anticipated.

I’ll be collecting the car tomorrow. In the meantime, whilst searching YouTube for some videos on engine remapping, I discovered this one which shows a guy comparing two similar cars, one a BMW 330d, and the other a Mercedes C270 CDI, which apart from mine (a C320 CDI) having a bigger, six cylinder engine, and being a newer, 56 plate, the interior is IDENTICAL to that of my own car.

Anyway, watch this and see what you think. I totally agree with the chap’s comments about how rapid it is (mine, having a bigger engine, is substantially faster again), and the ride factor! Oh, and one thing: my car (although also being a diesel), doesn't sound like a fooking tractor when you start it, like the car does in the video (often known as ‘diesel clatter’)… :nono:

I guess the six-cylinder engine used in mine largely sorts that out, as on start up, it sounds pretty much like a car with a petrol engine. Anyway, here’s the video (observe the written comments On YouTube underneath about the C320 CDI):

I had my old BMW 320d re-mapped by a highly recommended specialist and it went like a rocket, but with improved fuel consumption. But, the engine note became unacceptably harsh and the re-mapped torque output was perilously close to the gearbox limit. So, I had the original map re-instated which, in hindsight, was probably the best thing to do. Your Merc gearbox is probably stronger than the shitty GM built 5 speeder that was in my old BMW, but things like torque converter lock-up clutches are potential weak points and quite expensive to replace.

Of course, you don't have to use Warp 10 all the time, and I'm sure your chap knows his stuff, but do check the numbers. Also consider having the gearbox serviced to make sure the fluid is fresh and the right spec, and that the various internal pressures are correct.

I had my Mini John Cooper Works re-mapped... It went freaking mental...lol and it was already a fully fledged nut-job anyway. I found it was simply too quick even though I had the JCW brakes updated too. The power to weight ratio was blinding. I went through tyres like butter, just had too much torque.

I got bored of overtaking sports cars though.... lol

Hi Hugo,

I had my old BMW 320d re-mapped by a highly recommended specialist and it went like a rocket, but with improved fuel consumption. So, I had the original map re-instated which, in hindsight, was probably the best thing to do. Absolutely - and those are indeed very valid points. Kevin and I were actually discussing this last night, and about the best way of making the car as much of an ‘animal’ as possible (lol), but within its safety and design limits.

We’d even discussed (or rather I’d asked him) about removing the limiters on the gearbox, which was met by him with a resounding ‘NO’, unless I planned on simply using the car for going round a race track! :eyebrows:

One thing I will be doing later in the year is fitting a stainless steel sports exhaust system (another thing Kev specialises in), with AMG quad tailpipes. That should give the engine a rather nice tone, together with some additional ‘oomph’, as well as look rather sexy!

This is what I had in mind, minus the ’turbo whistling’. I think the noise produced there isn't too ‘boy racer’ sounding - just a nice purposeful ’thrruumm’……

Also consider having the gearbox serviced to make sure the fluid is fresh and the right spec, and that the various internal pressures are correct.

Yup, that’s getting done too, along with the remap :)

I got bored of overtaking sports cars though.... lol

Lol - the only thing about ‘pocket rockets’ like that is stopping them! Mind you, I suppose that happens when you hit something :D

lol... yep. so I needed grip but at £250 per tyre it was just too crazy.

That’s how much I pay for the Pirellis on the Merc! Hence why I’ve taken out a tyre warranty….

I guess the six-cylinder engine used in mine largely sorts that out, as on start up, it sounds pretty much like a car with a petrol engine. .

I bet it doesn't. Mainly because a decent petrol V6, when started, should make barely any noise at all! ;)

Marco
13-01-2015, 13:46
Lol - I’m not saying that it’s ‘silent’, but it most certainly doesn’t sound like the car featured in the earlier YouTube video. There is a gentle noise on start-up, which I can’t successfully describe in words, but it’s totally devoid of that horrible ‘taxi-like clatter’, synonymous with many diesel engines, especially older ones.

Furthermore, when the car is running, all one hears is a gentle ’swish’. Numerous petrol car-owning drivers, who’ve been passengers in the car, have commented on how it doesn’t sound anything like a typical diesel engine. I’m sure that most modern diesel cars are the same :)

One thing I will be doing later in the year is fitting a stainless steel sports exhaust system (another thing Kev specialises in), with AMG quad tailpipes. That should give the engine a rather nice tone, together with some additional ‘oomph’, as well as look rather sexy!

Yup, that’s getting done too, along with the remap :)

Marco.

Personally I would wait until the exhaust is fitted before I got the car remapped.
It's a bit like setting up your TT geometry, and then changing the cartridge without making any further adjustments.

Hi Kevin,

Personally I would wait until the exhaust is fitted before I got the car remapped.
It's a bit like setting up your TT geometry, and then changing the cartridge without making any further adjustments.

You’re probably right, but I’ve spent enough money on the car for the moment, so the new exhaust system can wait. Besides, I’ve discussed the matter with Kevin and he assures me that there will be no problem optimising the whole ‘system’ later, even if I go for the remap now :)

Picking up the car this morning - I’m even more looking forward to assessing the results of the remap than I was about first assessing the sound of the stereo! :eyebrows:

I guess that, these days, that’s more where my head’s at… Yes, I like hi-fi (and I’ll always love music), but I love enjoyable driving in a nice car even more!! :exactly:

I’m even thinking about cancelling my monthly subscription to HFN, and getting ‘Octane’ instead…. Nurse!

Lol - I bet one of those would be a riot! :D

Got my car back, and I’m absolutely delighted with it! What a difference a proper remap makes, rather than using a tuning box, carried out by someone who understands what he’s doing and can optimise all the curves properly, thus making the engine performance very linear...

The car is now smoother, quieter (soon to be more economical) and considerably faster!! I’d thoroughly recommend a specialised remap like this for anyone wanting to release the latent performance in their car, and I’d also recommend Kevin’s expert services.

Read about his remaps here: http://bmwizard.co.uk/services/remapping-and-chip-tuning/

Next thing I’m going to try is a Terraclean. It’s been on my radar for a while now, since Ali Tait mentioned it to me last year, and after chatting today with Kev, he’s going to be an appointed dealer from next week, so I’m taking the car in to have it done.

Interesting video on it:

I’ll see if I can find the pics Kevin sent me of the ‘before’ process! Needless to say that the new car system sounds fab, especially now that I’ve set it up the way I like it. I could honestly sit for hours listening to music in there! :)

Very nice, although it kinda nullifies the boot;) Suppose you have the rest of the jallopy for storage. Sure looks comfy

Marco
26-01-2015, 21:45
Lol - nah, I zoomed in on the sub, so the pic doesn’t show all the boot space in front of and to the side of it! ;) Also, it’s only a set of speaker cables connecting the sub, so those are easily disconnected, and then the sub just lifts out (when necessary).

It is a comfy car - awesome on long journeys….

Marco
28-01-2015, 18:33
Ha - I’d actually thought about that! However, it was too late by the time I’d thought about it, as the cables had already been routed underneath everything.

The JBL interconnect cables are actually pretty good (typical ‘studio quality’ LCOFC stuff), so not crap, and the speaker cable used is rather good, ‘Connection', by Audison S 210 - 10 Gauge speaker cable (£11.50 per metre):

Wow what a job. Did you have a CD changer and did you get that replaced with a Kenwood version?

I have a funny story - when I had my MB stereo removed - I had the factory CD changer in the glove box - I wanted to retain that functionality - so I bought the Pioneer head unit - it is just released - pretty much a Beta product at the time - and I bought the Pioneer CD Changer - they did a beautiful job of fitting the CD player in the glove box - took a few extra hours to get it right - then in the end - they could not get it to work! Making a long story short - the new Pioneer head unit that I bought - no longer supports a CD Changer! How stupid can Pioneer be? Anyhow - they gave me a refund on the CD changer - and it still sits in my glove box today. Maybe someday - I'll get a newer head unit that supports it - for the most part I no longer use it.

Da Gangsta :D :)

Looking at the picture of the subwoofer speaker connections they would be better if they where insulated, the type with plastic covers or heat shrink.

If someone puts anything conductive beside the subwoofer such as a case or bag with metal handles etc the subwoofer terminals could be accidentally shorted out. (probably when going round tight corners)

The amplifier probably has a short protection circuit but never good to short out anything powerful.
Just a suggestion as to how I would have done it :)

Hi Mark,

De gangsta with de ganja, man! :peace:

Good suggestion - I see exactly where you’re coming from, so will look into that. TBH, the boot is rarely used to put things in, hence why it's so clean. The back seat tends to fulfil that role, for small bits and pieces, and if anything major needs transporting (or shopping, etc), we use Del’s car :)

Interesting about the CD changer! :)

I also had one (still have it) left over from the old system. However, I can play CDs with the new head unit, so the changer is no longer required. What I intend to do though is put a cassette player in the glove box, as despite having access in the car now to the latest music-playing technology, I still like my retro gear! :eyebrows:

Cheers, mate - sure am! I was round at a mate’s house last night, and when we went out for a drive, we were streaming music from his phone through the Bluetooth in the car system, and it sounded superb. I just need to get myself a decent phone now! :)

P.S As a point of note, the Terraclean engine de-carbonising treatment was very successful. More on that later on a separate thread!
