Hello from Wiltshire

Hi everyone. I'm Robert from Wiltshire and delighted to join your community. I am fairly new at this hi fi lark but fast recognising that quality counts so keen to get some advice on upgrades.

I have a Project Debut Carbon, Graham Slee Gram Amp SE 2, Cambridge Azur 651 and Monitor Audio BX2 speakers. This was all fairly recently bought (last 6 months) and complements a Ruark R7 in another room that I play CDs and the TV through. Well let's just say I am a complete convert to vinyl and not just playing my old 30-40 year stuff but buying a lot of new stuff too.

I like everything from prog rock: Yes, King Crimson, early Genesis through to Jazz and folk such as Bellowhead, Fairport Convention, Rachel Dadd and my latest discovery the Moulettes who are billed as 'prog folk' would you believe?

Anyway, based on some listening in a Hi Fi shop I have taken the plunge and am upgrading to a Michell Gyro SE with Ortofon 2m Blue. I can't believe it has taken me until my fifties to realise how good vinyl can be but at least I finally have.

Now to the question: I can't spend any more right now but in time will want to upgrade the rest of the system in keeping with the Gyro's capabilities. What would you recommend, speakers? amp? phono? Any help gratefully received.

Hi Robert, welcome aboard. There are a few gyro owners here and ive heard a gorbe myself. great decks. as for your question it would be best asked in blank canvas

Hi Robert,

An excellent introductory post sir and one in which you have identified exactly where you need to go with your system in the future. Personally I love the 'Gyro' not only for its superb musicality but also for its aesthetics, love that whole 'industrial' look. The Azure is a capable mid-range beast which could outlive a speaker upgrade or two, so I reckon that is where you should begin.

Incidentally there are a cracking pair of B&W Matrix 1 (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?35254-B-amp-W-Matrix-1E-speakers-for-sale) speakers for sale on the forum for just £175. These are speakers you'd need to spend upwards of 800 quid to better with a new pair. The crossovers are hefty and well designed as are the cabs. Drive units are B&W items but somewhat better than the more typical units the company fitted to lesser models of the period.

Now you're asking for it. :)

Seeking recommendations for equipment? Our lot will bombard you no end with their ideas (some of them may even be good).

If you're looking for a simple, classy amp, have a look at the Sugden A21a and maybe a pair of efficient Triangle speakers to match it. That'd be nice. As for phono stages, your Gram Amp 2 SE is a pretty good unit and very capable, but if you want to move up why not stay with Graham Slee and get an ERA V Gold or Reflex M (which is what I use).

I very nearly grabbed them myself but I think the missus would have clunked me over the head with them if I'd brought yet another pair of speakers into the house :lol:
