Hi from Camberley

Hi all,

I wanted to post of the forum to respond to an ad for an amplifier.
I don't listen to much music nowadays as I'm not happy with the sound.
I decided to sell off most of my old system which was Naim NAC62, Nap250 with home brewed power supply, Tannoy Devon speakers and Linn turntable with Ortofon MC.
I kept the turntable and bought a MC amplifier, Arcam A85, B&W NT7 speakers about 10 years ago after a dealer demo.
Decided recently to get Tannoy Berkeleys which have been disappointing so far (too boomy and forward midrange)

Thinking I need to go back to the Naim sound, I bought an Olive NAC 62 on eBay and now need to get a power amp to go with it.

welcome Peter. hope you dont just get your amp and then disappear. this place is a mine of info and friendly on the whole. try and get your system sorted and by all means ask for some help. thousands of years experience here. and thats just Walpurgis;)

Yes, it was the post by Walpurgis ( My new (vintage) Tannoy Cheviots! ) that inspired me to buy the Berkeleys and refurbish them.
Have to say that hi-fi is a strange business. A cheap system can sound very satisfactory whereas an expensive system can sound frankly rubbish.

That's a shame.

Could it be room acoustics, positioning or equipment mismatch? I've not owned Berkeleys, though I have heard them. Is the crossover OK, maybe the mid is affected by aging out of tolerance components. If they are boomy, bracing the cabinets internally may help and getting them off the floor a few inches might be a good idea. My Cheviots are about 8 inches off the deck. I doubt Naim amplification is going to sound right through the Tannoys (if you keep them).

agreed! lots of money spent a great system does not nesesarily make...nor does a cheap one. Get advice from people who have done it and paid the price first but eventually it will be your ears that are the final arbritor of what sounds good and not what your wallet tells you
