hi everyone my names craig from sheffield, and i have always had a fascination in old hi fi seperates, i can remember laskys in sheffield which tended to sell seperates rather than complete systems, i am looking to purchase a sound system which is for personal use , it will be situated in a dining room around 3mtrs x 3.5 mtrs, i cant tell you why but im drawn to the second hand stuff from the 70s 80s , i have to be honest and say im not sure if it opens a can of worms in terms of reliability and parts/repairs, but i am very new to this and come on this forum a complete novice , hoping to get some advice from you experienced guys
to summarise , we live in a semi so i cant play the system too loud , i was trying to achieve a quality sound and im still learning about wether its the speakers or the amp or the tuner or the cd player or all of them that do this,

it may sound corny but the first album i want to find is tubular bells the original to try the quality , :lol:
i dont have a massive budget and if i had to eliminate one seperate it may be the tuner to concentrate the money on the other components

anyway thats me i will probably have some silly questions that are really basic

Hi Craig, I also live in Sheffield (S11) - unfortunately I'm not very informed regarding the second hand market you are looking at but many on here are.

Hello Craig. Welcome to AOS.

If you want seventies Hi-Fi, you'll get loads of advice here. In my opinion, Japanese made gear is likely to be the most reliable, but there are British, American and European items worth considering.

Start a thread in our Blank Canvas section outlining your ideas and requirements (and budget). You'll get plenty of replies. It doesn't matter if you're just starting out, AOS members have time for everybody, as I'm sure you will find.

PS Nothing wrong with 'Tubular Bells' - it's a superb record and your right, the best version is the original with Viv Stanshall listing the instruments at the end of the record.

I bet your head is going round with options now Craig. Take your time and get used to what is on offer. It doesn't matter if you miss out on what looks like a 'bargain', there's always another coming along. Keep an eye on eBay for a week or two and ask us for an opinion if you see something that appeals.

youre so right spot on as a newbie im seeing what i think had fantastic reviews on e bay ending in 1 hr or so so tempted , but i need to learn more,
i am a very very newbie , but i hear a word over and over again KEF that tells me this speaker manufacturer seems to have a good following if an e bay bargain pops up

Hi Craig

I have been living in Sheffield most of the last twenty odd years been in Nottingham for a couple now
Its worth keeping an eye on some of the second hand shops Cash Converters on Glossop Road and Oxfam in Broomhill just up the road from Record Collector
Even the BHF shop on Arundel Gate they have had some good cheap stuff on ebay aswell
I will be going to Moorgate Acoustics to do some listening and hopefully some buying when I have the money as I am after a new system
