I was at that last bake off with Mr Coco's SP-10, a good sounding LP-12 and the Garrard.
All performed well and I think any particular deck seeing off all others is a subjective personal opinion - the ad should state that of course.

RD's did sound very good with the SPU as did Mr Coco's with his 11K cart and SME 12" arm and 60kg of granite plinthing in two sections:) My least fav was the Garrard tbh - probably the 103 being shown up in present company?

For ref the 1 power & 1 speed switches are pretty easy to replace - mine used a Maplin available switch with exactly the same standard pattern as the original Matsushita ones.
These just bolted / soldered in on my deck. See pic

A friend of mine recently bought a PL-71 (after hearing mine), and he had a bit more trouble installing the switches - his uses 3 switches and it took a while setting them up just right but he's done it. See pic

The point to note is that I have been looking for PL-71's since Nov last year and I have seen 7 come up on Ebay inc mine. Prices are up a fair bit since Gromit bought his. I make the average price 162
Very good ones go for a shade over 200. I guess prices are rising.
Add ~60 for shipping + you need to move one wire inside for 230-240V or get a Maplin 230 - 110v transfomer for 14.99.

One might also need to change the pitch pots and the electrolytic caps on the PSU (3) and even a further 8 on the motor board. These don't cost much at all.

There, I think that is everything that's relevant.

Thanks for the update as well, Steve. Perhaps we can do our own bake-off sometime with the Techys and your PL-71? :)

Hi Marco,
My turn to apologise - I posted my riposte to you on this thread instead of the 'poem' thread, realised what I'd done but the posting system (as I understand it) wouldn't let me delete it completely so I worked round it and only posted the dot (no dashes  )
Cheers,

Well it sold for 234 with 4 visible bids. A US one sold this week for 214.
Both an absolute steal sound / flexibility wise for that kind of money imo.

Nah, a Planar 2 is a FAR better deck - a bod on PFM says so, so it must be right. He likes and owns Naim as well, so he's got taste..........

I have a Planar 3 too and it's not too bad but it's no flight top deck.

I guess you're talking about the PL-71 I won on ebay yesterday. :eyebrows:
The total came to 262.99 inc shipping. Did I get ripped off?
It was a bit more than I wanted to pay but that was mainly due to the 30 shipping.

DSJR

If the deck arrives in good nick then you haven't paid too much. I don't think a Rega would be as good by the way, and my comments above should be taken as a pee take to FE sensibilities....

The PL71 should be at least as good as any of the better mid-priced decks I reckon, such as the AR legend, LPT, Heybrook TT2 and Manticore Mantra from the eighties, just fussier on positioning. Make sure the switches and pitch control pots are clean and working correctly, as the speed accuracy goes out of the window if these controls are contaminated.

Thanks Dave, that puts my mind at rest. :)
In what way is the PL-71 fussy about positioning? Or did you mean the PL-71 is less fussy? Sorry you lost me a bit on that sentence. :)

If you believe what the guy that DSJR is removing the urine from says your deck wont be at all fussy about positioning at all. According to his latest proclamation all hi-fi sounds better on the floor so just plonk it down anywhere and you're good to go:mental:.
Just don't go and tread on it...:lolsign:

All of the lighter "solid plinth" decks like the Techie (in standard trim), the PL71 and all Regas need careful siting away from the speakers and on a sympathetic turntable support. Don't expect the PL71 to sound bright and incisive like the Roksan though, but you should get more "colour" from the music once it's set right.

I've found what RD says about siting the PL71 to be pretty much correct. It's not that fussy about where it's placed or what on....... within reason........... obviously, plonked down in direct line and within a few few of a 'speaker its not going to work very well. ;)

Ok thanks guys. I'm a bit limited on positioning options really. I'm going to have to position it near one of my speakers but it will be on a half decent rack and I'll make sure to isolate it as much as possible.

Magna Audio

I think that is a fair price for a UK based one.

If you need any help with changing the switches, pots or caps on PSU or motor board let me know I have the full service manual as well.
It should be good to go though.

I've not found mine particularly fussy about placement. Much less so than the P3 .

Nearish to speaker is not a problem unless you like it very loud and then any deck starts to suffer to my ears / my ears suffer too.

What cart are you going to put on it?
