I have a friend who does not do forums and he wants to sell his Linn Sara's. He is the original owner and they are mounted on the proper Linn Sara stands. He needs to upgrade as his listening room is now much larger so they are just not cutting the mustard for him.

I have seen them and they are in excellent order, he does not have the foam grilles but these can be sourced new for about £45. He does have original cartons and documentation and he had all four drivers replaced about four years ago.

PM me with any questions please. Better close up pictures to follow shortly.

I think Saras are great speakers.

Mine sound superb driven by an Arcam MCD and Nait 2, sitting on a Mana rack, both plugged direct into an unswitched socket.

Backs tight against the wall sound better to me than away from the wall as in the pic.
I've not pushed them hard in a big room, but I wonder if they might cope quite well

What is the asking price?

ListeningEar

Better pictures will be provided this week but asking price is £350. My friend used to have them in a smaller room backed to the rear walls and he was always impressed with their sound.

The drives were replaced by Alan Gardiner, RADFORDS SERVICE, BRISTOL.

They don't look like KEF drivers to me..??

I am currently investigating this with Radford's in Bristol as they replaced the drive units plus they are both Linn and KEF dealers.

Craig

They should be 50 watt KEF B200 SP1014 drivers

The Sara's I recall had a white 'blob' in the cone centre.

yes....a white inverted dust cap..a modification by Linn...I used a pair of them in my Roksan Darius speakers...

As supplied from Naim/Linn guys:
Saras can be separated to three versions;
1. Early(original) Saras had a flat front edge, Scanspeak tweeters, and cannon speaker connectors.
2. Later Saras changed to rounded front edge(reduced diffraction), Hiquophin tweeters, and recessed 4mm connectors.
3. Sara9 had a front black plastic baffle instead of wood(better controled resonances), crossover was redone for three reasons; a)create an easier load, b)facilitate bi-wiring, c)flatten response. The mid-bass unit on the "9s" also had a stock small black cap covering the voice coil whereas the "Saras" had a huge white cloth cap glued on inversely. It has been my impression that this white cap was the reason for the legendary "nasal" sound of those speakers.

Therefore if is possible that replacement drive units might not have the white centre cap.

Was there an 'active' version? I seem to recall there was. May be wrong.

yes the sp 1014's were used with the stock dust cap...but it is a lot smaller than the dust caps in your image

yes the sp 1014's were used with the stock dust cap...but it is a lot smaller than the dust caps in your image

Well let's wait to see the invoice from my friend for the work Radford's did (they charged him £300) as to what parts they list and compare that to what Radford's tell me direct 😉

It's simple, if they have fitted the incorrect drives then the speakers will be sold as spares or repair for much less.

They will be a pretty high spec drivers...for that sort of money...be very interesting to see what they are...Kef drivers of this type are not available new anymore...they could be a bit special...

OK people, this is what the Linn dealer fitted in place of the original KEF units; Peerless 832737.

Did he fit two drive units in the isobaric fashion, or just one?

 Alan

...all four drives were replaced.

3. Sara9 had a front black plastic baffle instead of wood(better controled resonances)

I'm afraid that bit is a mistake - the Sara had a glass reinforced black plastic baffle many years before the introduction of the Sara9 - in fact, the whole of its life; if they ever had a wooden front baffle it was only very, very early ones.

The white dust-cap was actually a bit of card that Linn glued onto the driver instead of the standard dust-cap - this was intended to stiffen the cone. Linn also doped the front of the cone and painted bitumen paint onto the steel basket to reduce ringing. Over the years the Sara became an expensive speaker to construct and the 9 stopped using any custom modifications to the drivers and just used the KEF unit as supplied (now with a gasket instead of being glued in with silicone sealant). The nasal sound is largely the fault of the tweeter used at the time and the crossover.

...thanks for clarifying, I'm not a Linn fan at all so had to get my info from the Linn guys direct which was obviously not entirely 100% correct.

Anyway, more to the point, what do we think about these Sara's now having these Peerless drives fitted?

As you ask directly - I'm sorry but I'm not impressed; I don't understand why they didn't fit the KEF units that were fitted to the Sara9's. I'm afraid Linn aficionados would not entertain such a mod and many would want the older drivers that Linn modified. I realise this is a sales thread and mine is not a helpful post - just say and I will happily delete my comments.

It's perfectly fine my friend, I am with you 100%. Remember that the shop that did the work is a Linn dealer so I am totally confused as to why they fitted Peerless drive units. I did warn my friend that if Radfords fitted non-manufacture spec drives the Sara's will only be worth spares/repair value.

I suppose we could remove the Peerless, find some old suitable KEF drives and fit those,...not worth my time though...

In theory you could but it's a right PITA to do - it's reasonably common to find people have burnt out the voicecoil on one of their Sara mid/bass drivers (the isobarik configuration provided a punishing load that drew a lot of current from the amp, that coupled with the low sensitivity/small cabinet volume meant that they were often over driven). As such, it's not that easy to find replacement drivers with the white dust-cap and I would say very difficult to find four. They are a right pain to fit too if the silicone sealant method has been used for the gasket. I actually did a complete refurbishment of a friends not that long ago and could guide you through it but in all honesty I doubt it is worth the effort (as you already know).

i suppose the real question now is how do they sound as speakers and then sell as non standard hybrids. still look nice enough

...sound like crap to be honest!! lol But then as I said I never did like the Linn sound even when it was done to specification haha.

They just seem to struggle with anything more than female vocals and a few instruments, seem slow, laboured, bland, compressed. My friend did ask me what I felt was wrong with his system and I did tactfully highlight the weakness of his speakers especially in his size of room,...he agreed and said he was glad to get a second opinion which seemed to agree with his thinking.

Am not a fan of Linn speakers but Saras need some serious amps behind them. What amp was he using?

Naim NAP250 power amp with matching Naim preamp.

Heard back from Radfords, they said they would have fitted Linn correct drivers, clearly not in this case!
