With this much front end resolution he will really love his music,
Speakers if budget is strained wharfdale crystal 10 on stands
or better speakers Jr 149 on stands,

Should leave about £150 for amp and speakers:

Speakers - something that will work well with the room
Amp - something that will have no trouble driving the chosen speakers

Not in my humble experience Martin, my most modest p3-24 has shown a few Techies the door. The P6 with Ortofon 2M blue showed a well modded Techie a clean pair of heels, just so much more musical involvement in the Rega's we found. Dare I call it 'soul'? The Techie was flat and sterile by comparison.

Not everyone who buys a Rega TT is a vinyl newbie with no point of comparsion as is often assumed.

The P6 with Ortofon 2M blue showed a well modded Techie a clean pair of heels, just so much more musical involvement in the Rega's we found. Dare I call it 'soul'? The Techie was flat and sterile by comparison.

Ultimately personal preference would have it. But I cannot bring myself to recommend a turntable that struggles to spin at the correct speed. I've compared an RP3/RB300 (a minter from the late '80s) with my SL1200 and whilst there was not a massive amount in it and the Rega sounded very good indeed I preferred the Technics for its superior timing and authority. You do need to lightly mod the Technics as I suggested though, I'd expect most folk to prefer the Rega over a totally stock SL1200, I suspect I would too.

The Pro-Ject RPM-5 is a great TT and can be picked up very cheap. It's got a great look/design and pedigree. The standard tone arm is very nice too. Whack an Ortofon Red on it and your well away.

Ali, at the price this could fit the bill for the amp. Decent phono stage, enough power to drive most speakers and plenty change for a TT and speakers.

Suggest a Rega P3 Denon DL110, A&R60 or Rogers A100 and a pair of Mordent Short Pageant Ser2 should do the trick
Shame I just sold a RP3 for £100
For a budget of 500 you could do a lot worse than going into Richer Sounds they sell the project turntables andshould be able to supply a Marantz amp and the Cambridge speakers for circa that budget ?

Bought the system in the link on post 23 Alan, looks a pretty good deal.

Well the amp and TT have turned up, and there's a problem with the TT, the motor doesn't turn. Motor spindle jerks slightly when switched on, so looks like it's getting power, but does not revolve. The transit screws were not fitted, so looks like the motor has been rattled around too much. Anyone come across similar?

Scratch that, the numpty has sent a DC supply instead of an AC one.

debut3..... it should be an ac yes. its pre 2012. the new ones use dc sopplies although the motors are ac. its so they can run speed box etc

Apologies, as I’ve arrived late to this thread. May I ask which “well modded Techie” (i.e. in what way had it been well modded), it was that the P6 showed a clean pair of heels? :)

Also, for reference, how much is a P6, brand new?
