Being a bit bored after a day flogging some of my wood turnings at a Christmas fair (lots actually so Daddy Christmas might call after all this year:)), I sat and had a play with the Mac system this evening. I usually have the old Rogers Ravensbrook driving the KEF 101s or Sennheisers.

I got the Arcam Alpha down from the loft and the Teac A-R600 from bedroom 2.

The Mac feeds a Behringer DAC. The Arcam fell at the first hurdle. Murky and a bit flat. The Teac sounded crisp, clear and rather impressive but as I listened further, there seemed to be a lack of reality to the sound. I'm used to feeling I'm listening to a pretty good fascimile of a real instrument. So it was back to old stager and relief. So failed experiment and its all back to square one.

The old Rogers more than holds its own in this company, looks proper too. Nice wooden sleeve and shiny facia, none of this boring black stuff.

A package arrived from Falcon Acoustics this morning. The order was wrong of course, which is what one comes to expect these days. However, the bit that was right has been duly fitted. The brass grilles as fitted to the LS35a have been stuck onto the KEF101s and really do make a difference. The T27s have always had a slight sting on some music but that has now gone and the top end is really smooth. It will be interesting to see what difference the felt rings make if they ever arrive. The sent me 2"square lumps of felt instead:steam:

Great little speakers these. I continue to think they are better than the Beeb design.

I have both a series 1 ravensbrook & a series 1 ravesbourne both are classics but compare them the ravenbrook is the better of the 2 but my ravensbourne has been recapped and had new output transistors fitted all reviews say its a bad amplifier but i still think its up their with the best of them in the HI-FI yearbooks both are rated pretty well. I payed very little for them but their classics to me and will be part of my collection for a long time along with the classic quads i have too their a cute design too surprised by the size of the ravensbourne though its quite a heavy beast for the year of it.

Mine is a series 2 which means that it has the silver knobs. I always preferred the look of the ones with a black body and sort of champagne cap that the series 1 had. However, I have spent quite a bit of time with the KEFs today and they are sounding terrific. The grilles have cut the output a little and improved the balance so that the bass is actually quite good considering the size of the box.

The Rogers is just a great little amp. The volume needs to be wound up a bit into the KEFs but its only 15 watts a side. It seems happy enough at quite high levels. As the Quads are in storage for the winter, its likely that I will be listening to this system quite a bit. The heating is only in two rooms at the mo so the music room gets a bit chilly and as its old stone walls, a bit of damp sometimes creeps in. Can't risk the 57s in that atmosphere.

It is. I've owned a few of both and found the Ravensbrook just more musical, even though the Ravensbourne does do an adequate job. I had a Ravensbrook Mk.II driving a pair of AR4Xa speakers for a while and the combination was lovely.

If anybody fancies trying another oldie that sounds even better than the Ravensbrook. Look out for a Trio KA-2000 or KA-2000A. The power is similar to the Rogers, but the transparency is better and the sound remarkably clean. It's very lucid, rather like the Sugden A21.

Ah, cheaper than mine, they cost me £20. One bass unit wasn't working but it was just a wire off on the crossover. Changed those stupid wire spring clips to 4mm sockets whilst I was in there. Hopefully Falcon will get round to sending me the right felt bits soon. I reckon the 101s take some beating as a small monitor.
