Gradually failing speaker.

Hi guys

I have reached a turning point with my LS7's it seems the one speaker is louder then the other :( thought i was my ears due to flu and cold but i'm not that lucky fistly started by switching speakers left and right vice versa their was a clear audio difference when swapped left speaker to right channel its not my amp as its fine with other speakers. Tried numerous positioning and while the vocal is there its drifting towards the left side of the sound stage :rolleyes:. Though its been bugging me as i have sold a couple of items as i thought they were faulty. Any thoughts on what it could be they have done me a good turn maybe sell them to make a bit of spare cash.

Live with it or sell them.......its only a slight difference but its enough.

Check for possible dry joints in the crossovers before condemning them to history...

Can't see what else it might be except the crossover. Worth looking at. If you sell them as faulty you will get buttons if you can sell them at all. I suppose you could part them out and skip the cabs. Bit of a waste, though

Hi guys.

Should really try a mono recording before doing anything. I have changed speaker cables and the vocal is now in the middle maybe just another bad cable :rolleyes:. Positioning may also be a factor to though.

Could be a failing cap in the crossover.

The bass-mid drive unit was always well made and if it was coming unstuck, you'd know about it by now. As always, CAREFULLY check the drivers for firm tightness in the cabs oh, and this.....

Bearing in mind I do suffer ear infections from time to time (not as severe as I suffered before my T2 Diabetes diagnosis) and have had a long-lived blockage in one inner-ear which has taken an age and various meds to shift, I can tell you that ANY form of ear issues will play havoc with perceived stereo image. My 'downstairs' system has the image pulling slightly to the left at the listening position (it isn't the sources, speakers or amps), but very recently the image was pulling to the right instead because of my ear problem. I just turned it off in disgust and went to do some more soldering ;)

I'm confused now. If you swapped the speakers round and the problem moved with it then the problem has to be the speaker, it can't be anything further upstream. If it is now ok then maybe a loose connection in the speaker or the speaker cable connections which moving about has fixed, probably only until you play them loud again and get a bit of vibration going.

your not the only one thats confused.....been offered a £100 for them as they are......their is no problem with audio with they play clear with nice bass at low volume no crackles pops or cone distortion and stay the same at any level the problem is they have never been used loud. the problem could of been not enough wire on the - terminal so stripped it back so theirs plenty their now maybe they HI-FI game is not for me maybe should just stick with one system...i don't frustrating maybe its my ear as did get water in it the other day.

Try standing between your speakers at your listening position. Then in that position turn your back to your speakers. If the speaker that appears louder shifts left to right ( or right to left ) then it's your ears!

Well it turns out its my ear :doh:. Really good test Michael just need to get some ear drops as a wax build up is possible the doctor said. Also it was the same with a friends system and also my cold is still lingering so this will have something to do with it.........thanks for the advice though gents appreciated.

Reminds me of a bloke I knew who was deaf in one ear all his life, went for a check up for something unconnected and they found a blockage, turned out to be a tuppeny bus ticket he had stuffed in their as a little kid about forty years previous.

^ Interesting :lol:. The test was interesting though because i used other audio enthusiasts IE parents and sister and their conclusion was that the sound of the vocal was indeed perfect "in the middle" of the sound stage. Their was no difference the output of the speakers both were the same level :). So thats good i should of known really but these things always get you thinking i spent hours playing about with positioning & measuring until i thought it was OK and it was. So hopefully after the drops it will clear up but it can take weeks though :doh:.
