Anyone have experience of these ? From Tannoy's "affordable" range circa 1979... http://www.hnny.nl/archief_tannoy/pdf-brochures/tannoy_stratford-oxford-cambridge.pdf

They look nicely put together, relatively high efficiency, 10" bass & horn loaded tweeter etc. I just bought a pair because of all the classic British speaker manufacturers Tannoy is the one I have least experience of. I'm not expecting dual concentric quality here but they were a good price I couldn't refuse :D

Never heard any but they look like they should be quality, good solid cabs, 10 inch driver, high sensitivity, what's not to like?

I've owned them. They sound quite pleasant, but the vinyl wrapped cabinets are a bit cheapo. There is colouration from the large plastic coned main driver, but not excessively so and they are efficient. As you suggest, they sound nothing like the dual concentrics.

Well they'll be here Wednesday apparently, I'll let you know how I get on... Hopefully they're nothing like the DC1000/DC2000 range :spew:

Fingers crossed. They're not unpleasant, quite lively sounding.

Thats Geoff's style :)

I'll let you know how it goes in a bit - Just received a Rega Mira too so I'll have different presentation amps to try them on [also got the usual Sony ES].

Or was it praising with faint damnation? :D

Well historically I've not really got on with speakers you gave the thumbs up to so heres hoping these will knock my socks off :D

LOL, no such luck. One of the tweeters is open circuit, it amazes me how many people don't even notice !? This is the 3rd pair of speakers with this problem I have purchased this year [two of them were Tannoy FWIW].

Replacements are non existent it would seem so looks like these are destined to be broken for spares... A shame as they are really nicely made with real wood veneer & very heavy duty drivers, sounds pretty good in mono !

Just have to settle for the MAs James :) What's your opinion of the Rega Mira ?

The tweeters crop up on eBay quite often.

Ha no settling nesscarry Brian, the MA's are my benchmark I just like messing around with different gear :D

Thanks for that Geoff, I won't scrap them yet in that case... Do give me a prod if you see one :)

Sorry I forgot to reply about the mira Brian  not really had a chance to do much listening yet I'll let you know once I've got a few hours on it... Must say, I wasn't expecting plastic front/rear panels

Your package arrived today BTW, many thanks I'm sure I can find uses for 99% of it :)

Nice one glad you can use it James . I was never keen on the earlier Rega amps , however the Brio R changed all that . Lovely amp for the money.

Likewise, I can't stand the early stuff... Amongst the most coloured I've ever heard. This mira is about 10 years old I think (newer shape).

No probs. I go through all new Tannoy listings each day!

Cheers Geoff, may have negotiated a pair of tweeters from some Stratfords with knackered cabs for £20... Fingers crossed.

The Mira is definitely an improvement over the previous version, the music doesn't sound all thick & syrupy which is good... It seems to be audibly boosting the mid bass range which makes it sound punchy on pop/rock but silly with more natural music.

I doubt I'll be keeping it even short-term, the crappy build quality is a complete turn off (same reason I could never own any NAD!)

I really don't feel inclined to spend any further time with it ... It'll be appearing in a classifieds near you soon :D

Sony ES still rules over at Mr James manor then :)

Quite right! I'm yet to find anything superior for the silly cheap prices they go for.

Depends what you want from an amp I suppose?

You're not wrong there, the resistor is knackered... I guess it coincided with the open circuit tweeter  Someone had a party !

Tweeters came this AM... Long story short, these sound pretty damn good. They seem to work better with the Rega than the ES which is the polar opposite of the MA's... Swings & roundabouts this hifi lark isn't it ?

Just because a wirewound resistor has got hot and darkened, does not necessarily mean it's knackered. If you know the value, measure it and see. In fact if it's not open circuit, it's probably ok.

istari_knight
02-12-2014, 17:18
Supposed to be 10R Geoff, measured open circuit. Its been replaced with another of equal quality/rating.

These are really surprising me, I wouldn't call them high fidelity at all but they're certainly good fun... Get yer feet tapping anyway !

walpurgis
02-12-2014, 17:34
It's a regular thing on old Connoisseur BD1/BD2 turntables for the wirewound resistor in the power supply to get hot and sometimes go dark. If the TT hasn't been used for a year or two, you get a 'burnt insulation' smell from them for a few days. All perfectly normal. Every unit I've had has been like this (that includes three bought new donkeys years ago).

istari_knight
02-12-2014, 18:04
Don't exactly give them breathing space do they ? I can think of a couple of amps that use wirewounds in the output stage mounted so they are touching the PCB... Years down the line the whole area is a blackened mess.
