After months of delay, I've finally got round to replacing the crossover inductors in the Edingdale speakers as per Colin and Scott's recommendation.

The idea was to bring out more upper midrange and treble detail and the singer more forward in the mix. The actual work is fairly straightforward though you may find it will take some effort to remove the drivers from their snug seating to gain access to the x-over. A bit of unscrewing and soldering then all put back together- maybe a couple of hours in all...The result? Absolutely wonderful. The mids and treble soar, voices are even more present than before- already a forte in the original configuration. As I mentioned to Colin, the speakers now actually sound louder too at normal levels- I'm told this is probably due to better presentation of the upper mid-range which is in the bandwidth the human ear hears best. All in all a perfect integration of sound from lows upwards. The mids are at least as good as my QUAD 63s, probably better. If you've been swithering about the mod look out the Allen keys and soldering iron...This really is a must!

Hi Drew,
Assuming this is not something thats came to light just recently....
I was lucky in that my Edingdales came with the new crossover.
Colin spoke of them having the new inductor setup.

These speakers are, well, as good as I'll ever need short of a lottery win.
Even then I'll be saying "Well...really?"

As a Scottish Mafia get together recently shown, I'd need to seriously upgrade my amp to reach the limit of what what these speakers can do.

Well now Grant, as it happens I have 2 pair the Edingdale speakers left that are for sale. As I need some floor space for my new NORGE range of speakers I am offering these at a reduced price. Send me a pm or email via AoS and we can discuss options.

I have one pair ready to go finished in oiled Cherry veneer and full face grilles. The other pair are ready for finishing in the veneer choice of buyer. Both are fitted with the new upgraded crossover.

Glad the crossover upgrade has worked out so well for you. It is really a no brainer and is the result of development work Scott (scottmoose) did on the speakers when we joined forces to sell speakers under the REIVER ACOUSTIC name.

Can I fit the improved tweeter to the Eddingdales?

Is an active amp design possible with them?

Unfortunately the true ribbon tweeter we are experimenting with in the new NORGE speakers will not fit into the Edingdale cabinets, without a complete rebuild of the front baffle.

Regards the NORGE speakers, Scott and I are making progress but in extended listening sessions are having some difficulty in fully integrating the new ribbon with the Satori drivers where I am fully happy with the sound. To this end I am expecting in the post this week a new Behringer DCX2496 to play with and see if we can get the combination to fully blend digitally then convert the results into a final passive component crossover. Failing this we shall have to go with a dome tweeter. However this brings it's own problems as there are not many dome tweeters out there with sensitivities 93dB or over. So we would be looking at something like the SEAS Crescendo or one of the Scanspeak Revelator or Illuminator range of tweeters. Pricey to say the least. But if needs must.........

If you want to active crossover with the Edingdales then you'd have to wire out the passive one and add a bi wire binding post tray to replace the existing one. But why would you when IMHO a passive crossover is superior in performance to a digital one. By all means use a digital mini DSP or Behringer to get the sound that suits you and your room but then use the results to make up a passive circuit. Not that I have that much experience using the latest digital crossovers...........:scratch:

All I can say though is the work we have done to date on the new NORGE speakers promises to better the performance of the Edingdales. :eyebrows:

Just asking about the active setup as a "what if" Colin, just something thats banging about it my head.
Had an issue with a slightly boomy bass from the speakers at a Scottish get together which was unexpected.
Discussed several options with the guys, one of which was an active setup.

Was only evident on the digital system, not the vinyl.
Time passed and it sorted itself out, turned out it was a new USB cable running in (yes, really :))
All good now.
