IMF Compact speakers

What do Forum members know about these speakers ?
They are the original version with 3 drive units, the tweeters being a 3" damped paper cone unit according to the specification.
The bass drivers need the foam surrounds replaced, which can be done by the Wembley Loudspeaker Co.

Another pair to add to my collection, or sell if my Wife has her way.
If she asks how many pairs of speakers I want, I shall ask about her shoe collection...

I've owned them and the Super Compact. They're Ok, but not wonderful. I'd not bother with another pair.

These original Compact must be rare and late 60's I should think. The Super Compact was the model I remember, but I started in 1974 and IMF had been around for some time before this.

The twin cone bass unit is a real surprise, but maybe there just weren't small OEM drivers at the time (maybe before KEF offered their drivers to others?). If that twin cone driver is similar to that which Audiomaster/KJ offered in the early 70's (the Sonata was the bigger one and Solent the smaller one IIRC) then the lower mid won't be bad at all once refoamed.

The typical IMF balance at the time was with a slightly recessed midrange, rather the opposite of an 'exciting' up-front balance favoured by many audio enthusiasts. We sold many of them with Crown/Amcron 'D' series power amps (and IMF used them at the factory too I remember), these helping to control the bass and lower mid and letting the rest shine out.

Martyn, get 'em fixed and have a listen. Not Spendor/Harbeth grade, but hopefully charming regardless :)
