View Full Version : Hello from Hampshire
Hi there.
I was looking on the forums last night and it looks like a good place to be :)
I am a bit of a radio nut myself, and have been since the 80s. I am into FM DXing as well as hi-fi in general but only have a modest set-up.
Hi Nick - welcome - as another newbie around here, I can assure you you'll be made most welcome by everyone, enjoy the forum.
Welcome...
You know the score - what's yer kit guv? Modest and/or vintage setups are often the best fun, as throwing money at something to make it work isn't always the best answer :)
Thanks for the welcome.
My set-up is:
Rotel RA04 integrated amp
B&W 601 S2 speakers with Vivanco speaker cable
Onkyo T-4970 FM/AM tuner
Sony XDR-F1HD FM/AM/HD tuner modded with an enhanced de-emphasis correction board, memory retention battery & internal cooling fan (for DXing)
Sony SCD-XB940 SACD player
Tascam CD-RW-900SL CD recorder (which sounds better than the CD player - that surprised me)
Can't remember all the interconnects but I think it's Chord ones between the CD player and amp/CD recorder and CD player
I also have a Sony MD-JB930 minidisc recorder but the Tascam has superseded it now.

Hi Nick
Welcome to AoS.
What kind of music do you like ? Would you like to put some photos of your gear in the Gallery.
And what is DXing ? I have read this term on American radio sites, but no actual explanation. I am into FM radios.

Hi Nick and welcome to the Forum, a civilised place to be. :)
Supreme Dalek,
I believe that DX'ing is receiving very distant radio stations. This usually requires sophisticated tuners and BIG aerials.

Hi there. Another Doctor Who fan I see? ;)
I'm into electronica and dance: Detroit techno, house music, abstract stuff, also alternative/synth pop like New Order, Depeche Mode, old Pet Shop Boys, disco, soul, funk, post-punk, new wave, etc etc.
DXing is looking out for distant stations when conditions are up. On FM this is usually during long settled spells in the summer and autumn. I have heard strong signals from France, Belgium and Germany during these conditions. Another mode where signals bounce off intensely ionised clouds in the E layer (Sporadic E) can produce really strong signals from stations located between 1000 and 2000 km away. It's a great hobby but a bit specialist.

Hi Nick
I understand what DXing is now..........thank you.
Nice taste in music too. Dr Who.... Yes John Pertwee, Tom baker, and the first two. Feel the new series bar a few exceptions has been style over substance. With Steve Moffat in charge now it may hopefully be better.
