Well, I've decided to see what all the fuss is about and buy it - on CD though! (£4.09 + £1.50 p&p) - it will be interesting to see how the vinyl version goes tomorrow night...

(Turns out I already knew Hope's voice from her collaborations, (Air, Death in Vegas, Massive Attack, The Chemical Brothers) and David Roback worked with Beth Orton (who I went to school with in Norwich, incidentally) producing and mixing some songs on her album Central Reservation, another of my faves! Who of course also collaborated with The Chemicals, nicely closing the circle!)

Even if it was mint 200 gram and signed by the band I would not pay that money. £400 is also totally crazy........however auctions are places where people go crazy be it virtual or in an actual auction room. The values are based purely on how daft bidders are to get a thing. That is not a real value. However it can also be said that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay, and as there would seem to be one born every minute there are plenty out there to pay:doh:

Thats not a rare CD IMHO I have seen it at CD fairs etc...for a £5 or thereabouts. Did I buy it ? Nopeeee. I have this BBC session on Audio tape I think. No CD is worth £950 thats just barking mad, again IMHO. A signed by the band gold recording disc maybe.

It was via an awful nth-gen tape of Gong and the jazzy-improv of Teapot and Angels Egg that I got into the full wonders of the Canterbury Scene, Soft Machine, Caravan, et al. I love Allen's mythology. He's an extremely clever man and his later poetry and 'new age' stuff like 'Owl & The Tree' are very touching at times. He's a kind of trojan horse in that many will dismiss him as a mad-hatter, but there's so much more to him than that.

Love System 7, but if I am honest I think Steve and his wife have been treading water a bit recently. 777 is the best album which is the first, came out not long after The Orbs first album Steve was involved with that as was Youth and Patterson on System 7. Interestingly the American version of 777 is better than the UK version IMHO, track listing and mix is different.

I haven't heard Motivation Radio in so long I can't remember what its like, I have it on vinyl, so will have a listen. For me it was L which was my fave along with Green. Fish rising his first solo album is okay but I preferred L. His For to Next, And Not Or albums are very good too IMHO and point the way to System 7.

The daft (IMHO) lyrics didn't use to bother me, but now I think I would just laugh very loudly at nearly all of it. I once watched the Gong DVD Suburban gig 2000 in the shop I managed and my colleagues took the piss constantly at Gilli Smyth and David Allen way to old to be acting and singing what they were IMHO. Music was brilliant though.

I think the best example of a modern Gong, Hillage, Hawkwind vibe is Ozric Tentacles and Astralasia.

Dan you should check out Khan-Space Shanties, a brilliant prog album featuring Hillage and Dave Stewart..later of Egg.

I never knew the Hillage connection to Orb/Alex Paterson, and can't believe I've never come across System 7 before... just my sort of stuff too! Astralasia are fantastic, start with the early stuff "Pitched Up at the Edge of Reality" and work forward, they go from psychy/trancy to more full on electronica/dance as things unfold, all good though.
There is a little bit of info on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astralasia). You just got to like an outfit that take the time and trouble to scrawl little missives on the run out space on their lps....open your eyes....open your eyes....open your eyes...it is out there.

Has anyone seen the new Hawkwind reissues from atomhenge records? They're rereleasing some of the harder to get stuff (ie everything from about 1975 to about 1990) with tons of bonus material. I've only got 3 of them so far (Quark Strangeness and Charm, Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music, and 25 Years On) but they sound great.

I have been in your shoes ok, many times its the thing I loved about working in the audio trade the new exciting music customers would bring to a demo. AOS is the same too.

The early Orb and System 7 period could almost allow you to say the two bands were part of a larger musicians collective there are similarities between the two, and swopping of band members as well, so if you like early Orb you will like early System 7 (I hope...I do). I have seen the Orb twice recently and in the early days but never I have not seen System 7.

I love the Bob Calvert period and The Hawklords album 25 years on is excellent. I would love to know why its now a Hawkwind album ? It is but it isn't if you know what I mean. PXR5 should be on your list too, but its not quite as good as the others. Love ASAM, though at the time Hawk fans didn't like that album...I think its brilliant.

IMHO if its not Nik turner, Dave Brock, Simon House, Simon Powell, Del Detmar, Lemmy etc its not Hawkwind. The young wiper snappers Brock surrounds himself with now is frankly a poor version of Hawkwind. Come on Dave sort out your issues with the other old members.

Of the older albums I think the first self Hawkwind is underated I think its very good, but it does have moments of crazy electronic discordance. Hall of the Mountain Grill and Warrior on the Edge of Time are the 1974/75 classics. I think if you listen to a lot of Hawkwind you will realise that they have been rehashing the old stuff a lot....I gave up when I kept hearing all the old music rehashed.
